This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

                                CLUES

STARTING POINT:-

(1) Listen to the Halle' in the Zoological gardens and then
collect a visiting type present from Rylands before going to
Chetham's.Now go to the oldest railway station in the world
to begin your journey. Good Luck!

(2) Have some peace and quiet for a short change at Priors
Haven, try and visit Harriet Martineau before your next port
          of call.

(3) "Against the stream they multiply",could have been written
by William and Robert in their encylcopaedia. But Stevenson
and Buchan read on and moved on.

(4) "The most varied and most beautiful" is said about this
place. "An (if) you pass this water ye shall never return
agin alive". A warning ignored by James, to his cost. He
should have read the Old Testamant story of Jacob!

(5) Go a round on a more than 400 year old one of the best known
          courses in the world!

(6) Devana, burned to the ground "rose" from the ashes. 100,000
bloom every year, awarded many times. And it flowers in the
          crest.

(7) Go back to the Iron Age and visit a Broch, buy a jumper from
          Isleburgh for the return journey.

(8) See the Orient of Marischal. Play draughts outside in a
peaceful union, then visit the place that won the European
          Architectural Year Award in 1975.

(9) Tell the Don about the Bass in the royal burgh. Its a tall
          story!

                                PAGE 1

(10) Have a quiet holiday fishing for Moray whilst staying in a
          "Duff" house?

(11) Link the course first mentioned in 1616 - the third oldest
in the world. See the streets of honey-coloured sandstone
leading to memorials to the Sutherlands.

(12) Go to Market Street and visit the "biggest room in the
world". See a play in a steel capsule weighing 100 tons,
probably a "theatre-in-the-round" production. Ah well! Back
          to Picadilly.

(13) CAR-Ferry Gournock 33950!

(14) Finding safe harbour the Norse and the Celts might have had
something to say about this Harris being on their 11th
          century base.

(15) CAR-Ferry Gournock 33950!

(16) Watt and Kidd didn't live long enough to admire the 245ft
high tower here. The buildings are " classsical" in design
          though.

(17) Here were built some fine ships and echoed to the sound of
the riveter's hammer since 1871. Now the town has the
"rig-out" for new industry since the 1970's.

(18) 1,683 Strathclyde 43NS16.

(19) "Row they say" row your boat ashore, then see the Bute,
visit all the wildlife and archeological finds, then back to
          your route as before.

(20) Go back two places to get you on the right track.

                                PAGE 2

(21) Mary didn't see the Roman Military Centre. Although she was
a prisoner here. A rescue of Willie by Buccleuch is sung
          about though.

(22) This the largest sheet of still fresh water in England is
full of Islands. See the rare equestrian statue of
St.Martin. Orrest Head has a good viewpoint, perhaps Sir
          Henry Segrave didn't agree though.

(23) Piel four Islands then travel under water in a furnace for a
Polaric town. Take a ship inland and look for the remains of
an abbey for an unspoilt view of the coastline.

(24) Cross le lune by Sherton Bridge, visit the prison via the
gatehouse and think of John, The Duke, Henry and Elizabeth.
          Wave goodbye to the Spanish.

(25) St. Peter's Square on the site of St.Peter's field, where in
1819 a black page was written in this towns' book. 50,000
people assembled, 11 died in this famous massacre. The
people were supported though by John Edward
          Taylor(1791-1844).

(26) This place has the largest model-yacht pond in Europe. The
International Model Regatta is held here in the third
largest fishing port of England. In clear weather the Peaks
of the Lake District can be seen. So grab a boat!

(27) Did the Vikings ride their bikes to this 1,000 year old
'Tyn' Parliament? Perhaps they took the leisurely 15 mile
          route in red-and-cream horse-drawn carriages.

(28) Robert Bruce might have landed behind the Old Harbour where
Palm Trees fringing a 12 acre boating lake give a
Tropical-Lagoon atmosphere. Try and visit 'Lady Isabella'.

                                PAGE 3

(29) In June and September the roar of a Double T might be heard.
Erin went for a walk along the promenade to avoid the noise.

(30) Bounded by the sea on four sides, visited by fleets from
Greenland.Since 1975 catches have been halved because
          Iceland extended its limits.

(31) The Castle built here by Edward I in 1278 is unusual in that
the Donjon is separate from the main building and linked
only by a drawbridge. The river silted up in the last
          century. Richard II surrendered here.

(32) Visit this Regiments' Museum with eight Victoria Crosses on
three floors. Say a prayer to St. Peblig, believed to be the
Uncle of the Great Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.
          Edward II was 1st here.

(33) Ask King Arthur about the 'Maen Huail Stone'. Collect from
the Bank in the 1401 Prison, but beware the sawn off gibbet.
Compare the 13th Century beside the 19th Century Gothic. Now
          an Hotel.

(34) Go to "the meadow of the slaves". Queen Elizabeth II's
wedding ring is made from the gold here. Try a walk on the
Precipice or the Pony Path. Before climbing "Pass the
Cross" and say a prayer, then follow the high road.

(35) Head for Aber Falls, step back and admire the beauty of Afon
Goch, descend 1,500ft in 3 miles and "sea" the vast expanse
          of Lavan.

(36) Take the waters from the Bubbling Saline streams and
bottomless Sulphur Wells like the Victorians. Its restful
atmosphere is a good cure here in this town, just as much in
the 20th century as in the past.

                                PAGE 4

(37) Ask Mary, Denys and George about this 15th century Gothic
building. The side of it is dedicated to this town's
Regiment, and also contains the Regiments Old Colours. Go
for a stroll through Barton Arcade to Deans Gate then on to
          the Old Shambles.

(38) After seeing the Triple Peaks, cuddle up to the love spoons
made by the young men here. Visit the 24th to find out
about the 13 VC'S from the 23 VC'S awarded to the brave men
          here.

(39) The last invasion of Britain nearly took place here. The
French under orders from an American,Colonel Tate,in 1797
set to rouse the population against George III. It was a
total fiasco when they mistook women sitting on the beach in
red shawls for British soldiers. They laid down their arms.
          A stone marks the spot.

(40) Arrive at the old Roman station of Nidum. A Castle,Church
and Abbey side by side are all in ruins ,but very
          interesting.

(41) The Town Centre dominated by a bronze statue of Griffith
Rhys Jones, I didn't know he was musical! But tell that to
          Crystal Palace back in 1872.

(42) A ring of 2,000ft surrounds this town. The Church in Monk
Street was originally the chapel of an 11th century
Benedictine Priory. The ruins of an 11th century Castle was
the scene of a massacre when William de Braose had his
revenge. The Castle was destroyed on orders given by
Charles I in 1645, to prevent Cromwells forces using it.

(43) Many artists have left their mark in this town. But the
most prolific was John Wood -a Tyke- devoted to the
Palladian style. His first great work started in 1729. But
his last, a master piece, started in the year of his death
has a circumference of 3=arcs. It has Doric, Ionic and
Corinthian columns plus 365 motifs symbolizing the Arts and
Sciences on a frieze above the windows.

                                PAGE 5

(44) Henry Williamson could have written about Hugh
Squier(1625-1710), a local lad who became a wealthy London
merchant, who then built and endowed this town's grammar
school in 1684. He may have had a wig made at the Museum.

(45) Acacias,Palms and Banana trees grow in this town's warm
climate. A Scientist born here saved many miners lives with
his safety lamp. Go to Chapel Street and visit the Museum of
Nautical Art. Try the local pasties.

(46) Lobsters and crabs don't have much of a life here. Look in
the Museum at the Custom House for local history. The
Overbeck Museum is devoted to ships and shipbuilding,
probably because it's Devon's most southerly resort.

(47) In 1068 this place was the only one in England holding out.
After 18 days the town opened it's gates to the Normans. The
townsfolk were secretly hiding Gytha - mother of King
Harold. William marched in the East Gate whilst Gytha
slipped out through the West Gate. This town originally
entered the history books in AD80 as Isca Domnoniorum.

(48) When the Anti Corn Law was repealed in 1846. The Free Trade
Hall in Peter Street was used by the Athenaeum Society whose
1st chairman was Charles Dickens. This Town's Hall was
bombed in the 2nd World War, but rebuilt in 1951. Sir John
Barbirolli took the lead here. (1899-1970).

(49) The Cathedral in this town was rebuilt between 1270 and
1360. The West Face has the largest array of 14th century
sculpture in Britain. It has the longest stretch of 13th
century Gothic Vaulting in the World, decorating the
ceiling. Sit in the 59ft High Oak Bishop's Throne in the
          Cathredal dating from 1313. C47

(50) This town has a terrace called The Beacon, being built in
1792. Visit the A La Ronde built in 1798 and decorated with
shells and feathers. Built not with the aid of an Exe
          though.

                                PAGE 6

(51) This town was used by Edward I in the 13th Century as a base
for wars against the French. The Duke of Monmouth landed
here to lead a rebellion against James II. It was also the
place where Jane Austin had a cottage. The Philpott Museum
contains the remains of an Icthyosaurus found in local
cliffs. Visit the roadside Umbrella Cottage.

(52) Held here each June is the Bath and West Agricultural Show.
In the town square are the remains of the 15th century
Shambles - meat market. In the Middle Ages this town was
famous for its woollen-cloth and stockings.

(53) This town began as a port in the 13th century, on one of the
largest shallow-water anchorages in Britain. It was also a
base for pirates. In the middle of the Harbour lies Brownsea
Island. In 1907 Lord Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scout
Movement here, the campsite was big enough for 20 boys.
Visit Compton Acres, one of the finest Gardens.

(54) According to legend King Canute ordered the waves to retreat
here in this town. For 1,000 years it has been one of
Britains leading seaports. The Romans had a Port called
Clausentum here. The tip of the Peninsula(Eastern) was home
to the Mauretania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen
Elizabeth II, the last of the Atlantic Greyhounds.

(55) Twin towns connected by a promenade. John Keats lived in one
twin in the early 19th century whilst writing Endymion. A
Museum of Geology shows more than 5,000 fossils found on the
          island.

(56) The Western Pier was opened by the Duchess of Kent and her
daughter, Princess Victoria in 1833. Royal Pier was the
largest pleasure pier in the south of England. Outside the
West Gate is the Mayflower Memorial to mark the spot from
where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620.

(57) Humphrey Chetham(1850-1653) was a real benefactor of this
town. The school opened in 1656 and is now a School of Music
to develop the talents of musically gifted children. His
Library was the first free library in Europe. Thinking of
books, this town's library collection includes a copy of the
Gutenberg Bible, 60 books printed by William Caxton and
first editions of Greek, Latin and English Classics. They're
never at a loss for words in this town!

                                PAGE 7

(58) A New Town - one of the first built after the Second World
War. Visit Tilgate and its Three Lakes to pick from sailing,
rowing and fishing. Originally this was an old Coaching and
          Marketing community.

(59) Samuel Pepys supervised the construction of this Town's
Dockyard. Much more was designed by John Rennie in 1812. The
Royal Fountain Inn stands opposite the pier where Lord
Nelson's body was landed after Trafalgar in 1805.

(60) This town was a favourite with young fun-loving Edwardians.
The Railway bridge is called the "Sound Arch" because of its
echo. It was built in 1838 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Boulters Lock is the longest and deepest lock on the Thames.
           I've been there!

(61) Full of Georgian elegance a curfew bell is rung each
evening. Ride the White Horse to the College established in
1843 or to the hill-fort of Barbury Castle. Stop for a drink
          by the Kennet.

(62) This town has the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul which
contains the Tombs of some members of the Fitzwaryn Family,
into which Dick Whittington married. Alfred the Great was
          born here in AD49.

(63) This town is associated with a famous house originally built
in 1767 by Robert Adam for the 3rd Earl of Bute. But rebuilt
after a fire in 1843. Its 1,500 acre park was landscaped by
"Capability" Brown. It houses the Wernher Family's
collection and also momentoes from the Russian Imperial
          Family.

(64) David Lloyd George (1863-1945) and Emily Pankhurst
(1858-1928) were born here. A mural by Ford Maddox Brown of
the Atomic Pioneer John Dalton can be seen in this town's
Town Hall. And that matters to them.

(65) Put on a pair of gloves before visiting the Palace here. Sir
John Vanbrugh designed this Palace for the 1st Duke of
Marlborough. Sir Winston Churchill was born here in 1874 and
is buried 2 miles south in Bladon Churchyard. It's not near
a pop festival anyway. So Quiet!

                                PAGE 8

(66) The largest building in this town is the Victorian
tweed-mill. Nearby are Almshouses dating back to 1640. Three
miles north are the Rollright Stones.

(67) "Ride a-cock-horse......to see a fine lady upon a white
          horse"(Gammer Gurtons Garland-1784).

(68) Masquerade marks this town's cross. The site of a 15th
Century Castle. It was here that Henry VIII sent Katherine
of Aragon while arranging his divorce and led to the break
          with the Pope.

(69) Once a Danish Capital, then the See of the Bishops. This
town was the birthplace of Thomas Paine in 1737, author of
'The Rights of Man' and supporter of the French and American
          Revolutions.

(70) A very maritime town. A lifeboat station was founded in
1801, 23 years before the Royal Lifeboat Institution. The
'old town' is cris-crossed by cobbled lanes known as The
Scores and The Sparrows Nest. It has a Maritime Museum at
Bowling Green Cottage. Thomas Nash(1567-1601) and Benjamin
          Britten(1913-76) were born here.

(71) In this town the Duke of Lancaster(1340-99) remodelled the
castle and had it made into a palace. Perhaps a Scottish
Novelist and poet wrote about this place in his book.

(72) I wonder if Thomas De Quincey, born here in 1785 went for a
tipple in the Half-Timbered Wellington Inn after a game at
Old Trafford. Travel by the Ringway!

(73) Imposing red sand-stone ruins on the edge of this town are
the remains of a 12th century Castle. The Castle is the
setting for one of Sir Walter Scott's novels. John of Gaunt
enlarged the Castle in the 14th century. The National
Agricultural Centre lies 2 miles east.

                                PAGE 9

(74) At 1,000ft this is one of Britains highest Spa towns. It is
sheltered by an even higher ring of hills. On the shoulder
of one called Grin Low is a Stone Tower known as Solomon's
Temple. From there, there is a panoramic view. The Museum
houses a collection of Blue John ware made locally.

(75) Britains third largest seaport after London and Liverpool.
The Town was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian Monks
from Meaux Abbey, 8 miles away. In 1293 Edward I acquired
the settlement and laid out a new town(King's Town). William
          Wilberforce was born there.

(76) Conferences are held in this town. Anne Bronte visited her
sister Charlotte here but died there and is buried in St
Mary's Churchyard.Visit the Rotunda Museum, then take a
bike-ride up the 500ft Oliver's Mount for a panoramic view!

(77) This town has a Medieval Chantry Chapel standing on a
600-year-old, nine arched bridge which goes over the River
Calder. Richard II died here in 1400, probably murdered. He
wouldn't have been in a Mystery Play, performed here for
          more than 600 years.

(78) In the old folk-song, any young man courting here "baht
'at"(without hat), risked the chance of catching thee death
o'cold. A lovely spa town, try to climb the Cow 'n Calf for
          a breathtaking view.

(79) UMIST(a collection of colleges),was designed by Alfred
Waterhouse, also designer of the Town Hall. It start life as
Owens College(John Owens 1790-1846). The College opened in
1851 became part of Victoria 1880. Then it became a separate
University in 1903. Many buildings structured together
adding to the Concrete Mathematics Building in 1960. Which
if you have solved all the clues and done your mathematics
correctly, you should be studying there.

          WELL DONE!
