Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- July 1991 --------- Welcome to the July 1991 issue of Archimedes World. The many programs in this issue are entertaining, practical and stretch the Arc to the limits. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1991. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. !Menon is public domain. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWJul91' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWJul91' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying When the '!AWJul91' application icon is dragged to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software from the RAM disk it will need to be set to 1500k. Four megabytes of memory is required to comfortably run the software from there. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by selecting the 'Open viewer' items from the menu and dragging the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied across. They can then be loaded without using the disk menu. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text displayer module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs, read any instructions and open program directory viewers. Each item on the main menu leads to a sub-menu. Click the select button once over the icon to select a menu item. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. Each sub-menu contains one or more programs. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. When you select the 'Open viewer' option a directory viewer will open up on the desktop. This allows you to run the programs by double-clicking or you can drag them to another directory viewer to copy them onto another disk. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu which is usually the main one. The Programs The most powerful fractal graphics generator available for the Archimedes is called Mandy. She produces stunning 256 colour fractal patterns which can be explored in great detail. She also enables you to save the fractal images to disk as sprites. She gives you lots and lots of options to play with thus enabling you to explore this fascinating field of science to the full. ProBase is a powerful desktop database which, due to the Risc-OS interface, is very easy to operate. Yet it has built-in sort and search routines for quick manipulation of data. The report and query functions allow you to get the information you need from the database with the minimum of fuss. Anyone with lots of information to store and make reference to will find ProBase a great helper. FileSpy displays a neatly formatted hexadecimal dump and disassembly of any machine code file which is dragged to the menu bar. Upto three disassembly windows can be opened up to allow cross referencing of code sections. You can search for a particular value in the file or go to any given memory location. Impression has no facilities for providing statistics such as number of words of a given character length or number of sentences of a given word length. Now with !ImpStats you can find out quickly and easily. Simply drag an Impression document to the menu bar and a text file containing various statistics will be produced ready for saving to disk. Find your way around the desktop maze. The !Maze desktop window displays your view of the maze. Press the mouse buttons to move forward or turn to the left or right. The object of the game is to move from the starting post to the finish. A map can be called up if you lose your sense of direction. Archimedes World is proud to present a fully playable demo of MicroPower's new 3D Chess game. Although it only allows you to play against another human, it does give you a clear idea of what can be expected from the full game. With every conceivable feature this is the definitive Chess game on the Archimedes. Please read the instruction file carefully before running the game. Regular Features As a unique service to all our readers we present on this disk the latest versions of the Acorn Risc-OS printer drivers. Usually the only way to obtain these upgrades is to download them from the SID bulletin board. Alternatively you can go, disk in hand, to your local Acorn Dealer. Neither method is convenient for everyone, so now all you have to do is buy Archimedes World on a regular basis and we will keep you up to date. The text handling routine library and example programs detailed in the Five Alive article are all provided for you to load and experiment with. Programming The ARM explains the first stages of creating your own Risc-OS compliant applications. The shell program explained in the article is provided for you to load and examine. The 'Ultimate' painting was drawn by Steven Nisbet using Artisan 2. To fill the spare space on this cover disk we have included a public domain program which is detailed in the Nearly Free article in the July 1991 issue of Archimedes World. The program is !Menon. It is included on the disk as a free piece of software. As it is public domain you are free to copy the program as many times as you like and to give copies to whoever you choose. This only applies to the public domain software on this disk. The Archimedia section contains advertisements and offers which should interest all those looking for a bargain. We suggest that you load the text files into !Edit and enter details into the forms before printing them out. Earn �800 From Your Program We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. The only limit which we apply to software for the cover disk is that it has to be less than 300k in size. Please send a stamped addressed envelope if you would like your disk returned to you. Public Domain If you are the author of a public domain program you will be interested to know that we are able to distribute your programs. By including your program on the cover disk you will reach an audience of thousands of Archimedes owners.
