This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

In the text you may find buttons ( ), and if you * * click one, the window will move to that reference. * ************************************************* More on HelpReader ****** HelpReader system generator ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HelpReader is a stand-alone application for reading application help files which does not need any application such as Edit to have been loaded first. It also has the advantage that as it is written in ARM code so that it will not use up much disc space. The application HelpGen will generate such HelpReader systems and is not needed when the help file is read. Overview ~~~~~~~~ To generate a help system for an application you just drag the application to the HelpGen icon. The relevent files will be created to produce the stand-alone help system. After the help system has been created, a report window will open. Click 'Test' to try out your help system. Two files are needed to create the help system, the text and the definition of the subject menu. In the application directory, the file 'HelpDes' contains the filenames of these files which are inside the application directory. The format of the HelpDes file is: Name of the file containing the text (the text file) Name of the file containing the menu definition (the menu file) Options In the current version of HelpGen, the only option you can use is 'n'. If this option is set no menu will be put on the screen when the help system is run. If there is no HelpDes file in the application directory, one can be made automatically. More information. The only files which are needed for the generated help system to work are '!Help', 'Help' and 'HelpReader' (they must be inside the application directory). The HelpDes file and the source files can be removed for the release version once HelpGen has generated the help system. The text file ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The text file is the text to be displayed in the window. Each line should have a newline at the end of it (the result of 'Format text' in Edit). If this is not done, HelpReader will not be able to display the text correctly. To tell HelpGen where to move the window to when a menu item is chosen or a button clicked, you must set labels in the text. These are lines which begin with '@#' followed by a label name. They are removed from the text when the help system is generated. The label must consist of alphanumeric characters and there must be no spaces anywhere on the label line. For example, a label line might read: @#label Please note that this example is indented. This is to stop HelpGen thinking this line is a label, and deleting it from the text when this help system was generated. When you set a label, there must not be an indent. To set a button in the text, you insert '@%label#' in the text, where 'label' is the name of the label you want the text to move to when you click on the button. Look at the files in the subdirectory 'Text' inside the HelpGen application directory for some examples or press to see what they are. The menu file ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first line of the menu file is the title of the help window, typically the name and version number of the application. The rest of the file is the definition of the menu. Each line is one menu item. The format of each line is: Menu_item,label When this item is chosen from the menu, the window will move so that the label will appear near the top. See the example menu in the subdirectory 'Text' inside the HelpGen application directory. Automatic HelpDes file creation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If HelpGen cannot find a HelpDes file in the application directory, it will ask you if you want to attempt to create one. If the answer if yes, HelpGen will look for a text file called either '!Help' or 'ReadMe'. If it can't find either, it will stop unsuccessfully. After the generator has found some suitable text, the following actions are performed to produce a HelpDes file. They are: Create a directory inside the application directory called 'MakeHelp' Rename the text to be the file 'MakeHelp.Text' Create an empty menu file with the title of the HelpReader window as the name of the help system Create a HelpDes file specifiying these two files with the option 'no menu on start up' When all this has been done, a help system will be made using these files. Examples ~~~~~~~~ The subdirectory 'Text' inside the HelpGen application directory contains some examples. They are listed below.
