This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

TelAddr v1.03 by Mark Hobson

What is TelAddr?
----------------
TelAddr is a multi-tasking Wimp telephone and address book. It allows you
to store (so far) up to 256 records, each including name, address and
telephone fields. The program allows you to perform searches through the
database, sort the book and it provides many save options, like save book,
save partial book, save searched records and save current address. All of
the aforementioned saving facilities can be saved in either the TelAddr
format (filetype &100), or in ASCII (filetype &FFF), and also can be
directly saved to another application (e.g. Edit or any other
wordprocessor) via a Ram transfer.


Using TelAddr - the main window
-------------------------------
Clicking Select on the icon when it appears on the iconbar opens the main
address book window. It is from here that the user can input the data, move
through records, add and delete records etc.

On the left of the window is the toolbox. This shows from top to bottom:
open search window, sort database, add record and delete record. Also,
attached to the bottom of the window is the position window. This contains
six icons to move through the database, from left to right; move to first
record, move back five records, move back one record, move forward one
record, move forward five records and move to the last record. To the right
of these icons is the 'position icon'. This shows the current record number
(starting from one), and the total number of records respectively.


Editing the address book
------------------------
To start, try typing an address in the appropiate fields (remember that you
can use the up or down cursor keys or RETURN to move through the fields).
Now create another record by clicking on the add record icon on the toolbox
(third one down). You should see the position icon change from "1/1" to
"2/2", the first number means that you are viewing the second record, and
the other number means that the total number of records is now two.

Try adding several addresses and deleting them - you should be asked for
confirmation (this can be changed, but we will come back to that later).
There are other operations that can be applied to the address book which
are selected from the menu. Click Menu over the window and open the submenu
'Edit'. You can now add a record before or after the current one, delete a
record or clear a record. You can also delete the whole address book, but
this, like the others, is irreversible.

Instead of using the position icons to move around the address book, you
can also goto a specified record. Click Select on the '�' icon on the right
of the position window and a writable icon should appear. Type in the
record number you wish to move to and press RETURN, and the corresponding
address will appear.


Searching
---------
By clicking Select on the search icon on the toolbox (first one down), or
by selecting 'Search...' from the search submenu, the search window will be
opened. The search string should be entered (only simple searches can be
performed, i.e. no AND, OR, or NOT conditions), and case sensitivity can be
selected or not. When case sensitive, the program will try to find the
exact search string within the address book. For example, searching for
'Road' with case sensitivity on, will only find matching fields with the
exact string 'Road' in it. But without case sensitivity, it will match
'road', 'roaD', 'ROad' etc.

You can select or deselect fields you wish to search in by clicking on them
in the 'Fields' part of the search window. Now, to start the search, either
press RETURN or click on 'OK'. Immediately, a search results window should
appear displaying the matched fields and their record number. The search
string is highlighted in each of the matched fields (unless this option is
disabled), to make finding the match you want easier.

By clicking on the field in the results window, TelAddr will take you to to
that record and field. Now you can change the data if necessary, but
remember that this will invalidate the search results, so click on the
'Redo' icon to perform the same search again - thus updating the results.
You can also save or delete the matched records, or re-open the search
window, by selecting the appropiate icon.


Sorting
-------
After inputting your address book, it is often useful to sort the address
in alphabetical order. By clicking on the sort icon on the toolbox (second
one down), the program will sort the address book according to the name
field.


Saving
------
As already mentioned, there are several different types of saving that can
be performed. To just save the whole address book, either open the save
book box from the save submenu, or press F3. From here you can choose
whether to save as a TelAddr file, or a text file. The difference is that
TelAddr will only load its own filetype and not text files, but when saving
text files, the addresses are layed out in a more understandable format,
also allowing for easy transfer into word processors. The format of a
TelAddr file is similar to a text file (try loading one into Edit), but we
will cover this in more detail later.

In the save book window, there is an extra option - Partial. Selecting this
extends the window allowing for start and end records to be specified for
when saving the book. Use the arrow icons adjacent to the writable icons to
alter the values. But remember that the program will not allow the start
record number to be greater than the end record number, and vice versa.

TelAddr also provides an option to save the currently displayed record
alone (press CTRL-F3). As before, you can choose between the two formats,
but if text file is selected, then two extra options appear. These are
useful for when importing the address (as a text file) straight into a
document in a word processor. For example, when writting an formal letter,
you could search through your address book for the destination address, and
then import it straight into your document without re-typing the address or
saving it to disc first (as a Ram transfer is used).

For this purpose, the extra options allow you to specify the result of the
saved address more accurately. You can choose between whether you want to
include telephone/fax numbers or not, and whether you wish to add commas
and full stops automatically.

Also, after performing a search, you can then save the matched records as
before in either format. The hot-key for this function is SHIFT-F3 or you
can use the 'Save' submenu.
  
Technical detail - when saving a file to another application, TelAddr
checks whether the buffer passed to it is large enough for the complete
file, if not it produces an error. This is due to the way that TelAddr
stores the address book, but it should not pose a problem as most text
editors like Edit create large enough buffers for the transfer. It is only
with old programs such as 1st Word Plus that only pass small buffers in
succession.


Loading and merging
-------------------
Double-clicking on a TelAddr file instructs the program to load that
address book over the top of the current one. But if the file is dragged
either to the main window or the program icon, the file is appended
(merged) to the end of the current one. (If the current address book is
unsaved and a load is executed, then TelAddr askes for confirmation.)

An extra feature of TelAddr (if selected in the preferences window), is
that when merging a SINGLE address file, and if the current record is
blank, then the address is inserted over the top of the current record.


Preferences
-----------
The preferences window can be obtained from the iconbar menu. This window
contains a list of options to configure TelAddr to how you prefer it. The
configurations can be saved so when you next load TelAddr, the choosen
options will still apply.

Most of the options are self-explanatory, but you can use Help to obtain
extra information about them. Basically, you can: switch confirmation on or
off for different operations, choose the nature of merging (as already
mentioned), select how records are added from the toolbox, set the default
search options, set the default save options, switch matched highlights on
or off and change the colour, choose a default address book, select the
panes to be opened by default and choose a default country.

The default address book can be selected by dragging the desired file into
the preferences window, the filename will then be entered into the icon.
Then the next time TelAddr is loaded, the specified address book will also
try to be loaded.

The default country, when selected, inserts itself into the country field
when creating a new record - this can be useful when the majority of your
addresses are all in one country.

Down the right-hand side of the window are several icons: load - loads the
last saved preferences, save - saves the current preferences, default -
sets the default preferences, cancel - restores the original preferences,
ok - sets the current preferences temporally.


Misc
----
Information about the program and the current address book can be obtained
from the menu, and the window panes can be toggled on and off from the
'Display' submenu.

N.B. The filetype number (&100) may clash with other applications (not that
I know of any) as it is not a registered filetype.


TelAddr file format
-------------------
The format is very simple. It starts with a string along the following
syntax :
 TelAddr(<file format version number * 100>,<number of records
 starting from 1>)

This is followed by continuous fields from every record in order. The
latest file format version number is currently 1.00
                                                   

Risc OS 2
---------
TelAddr uses the outline font Trinity.Medium, and therefore needs to 'see'
it before it is loaded. Risc OS 3 users do not need to worry about this as
the font in stored in the new ROMs.


Version history
---------------
1.00 - First version, written for a GCSE computer studies project. Full
       implemintation; sorting, searching, editing, saving, preferences etc.
       
1.01 - Updated to work under RISC-OS 2, also fixed minor saving bugs
       and implemented font checking routine.
             
1.02 - Fixed minor requester bug.

1.03 - Change templates and sprites slightly, and a small bug fixed
       concerning searched records being deleted.


Changes I would like to make, sometime.
---------------------------------------
* Change the maximum number of records to be only limited to the amount of
  memory, (i.e. claim extra memory as records are created). You can change
  the maximum number of records by altering the variable total_max% in
  !RunImage and increasing the value of WimpSlot respectively in !Run, if
  you wish.

* Update the program to use Risc OS 3 properly (like giving help on menu
  items etc.), if I ever can afford the new programmer's references
  manuals...
