This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

April 1995
We select only the best software for publication to make sure
you have genuinely useful programs. Please read about the
programs in the magazine before using the software.
All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are
copyright Nexus Special Interests Ltd 1995. They may not be
copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up
copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain.
Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is
inclusive of a site licence for the software.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, you should make a backup of this
disk. Use only the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such
as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another
backup from the original.
Archived
The !AWApr95 application contains all the software, which is
stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the
disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !ArcFS
application. The '!AWApr95' application, when de-archived, will
not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk
and it will run perfectly well from there.
Running
To enable you to run the software from the archive we include a
copy of read only version !ArcFS. This application allows
loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual
way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading.
This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software
on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely
copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file
inside the application directory.
Copying Software
When the !AWApr95 application icon is dragged from the archive
window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To
run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to
be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2Mb or more of RAM then
you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the !AWApr95 archive
to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from
the archive.
You can copy individual programs from the cover disk if you
choose. To do this click with the left (Select) mouse button on
the Open Viewer option. This will open a standard filer window
which you can drag the items from in the standard way. The
files will be de- archived as they are copied. They can then be
loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS.
If you have any difficulties running software from the archive
then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try
running them from there.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes
World. Any additional documentation may be found in the
relevant directories on this disk. Text files can be displayed
from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text
display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that
your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and
read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a
sub-menu while others run applications or display text.
To select a menu item click the Select button once over its
icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the
desktop. To get the menu back, click on the Waiter icon on the
icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it.
To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be
instructions on using the program which can be viewed on
screen. Please be sure to read the instructions before you run
the programs.
The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option
which takes you back to the previous menu.
Programs
!HQtracker (Risc OS 3)
This program allows you to compose
musical tunes. Included with the package
is a full manual and the !HQplayer.
Very useful for composing games music
as well.

!FracPaint (Risc OS 3)
This utitilty generates fractals for
numerous purposes. For example
design a fractal to stick on the
desktop backdrop. Try the files demo
and sprites with a tiled effect.

on your machines.
Hard Disk Users Warning:
Many of the programs on this disk are generally set for drive
0, and sometimes you will find certain programs will not load.
The reason for this is that you may have configured your drive
to 4, rather than 0.
If a program does not load and gives an error, try configuring
the drive back to zero, this is done by pressing F12 from
desktop and typing *Configure Drive 0. This should then,
hopefully, remove any errors caused by any program run from the
menuing system.
Tested Software
All the software on our cover disks are tested on standard
Acorn machines. This means that no extra boards are fitted during
testing.
Software is also checked for RISC OS2 and RISC OS 3 operating
systems with various memory configurations using various third party
memory upgrade kits.
The cover disk only allows you to read files from the disk
and not save to it, the reason for this is that the version
of ARCFS we put on the cover disk is read only.
Regular Features
The Adverts section contains advertisements from certain companies
who supply the Archimedes Aprketplace. There are details of new products,
sample files and order forms. There is also a number of forms for
subscriptions, software submissions and back issue orders which can
be loaded into a text editor, filled in and printed out.
Viruses
We take the threat of viruses seriously at Archimedes World
so our coverdisks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they
are virus free.
We can only check for known viruses and there is the small
possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our
checking procedure. Please be aware though that you are as
likely to contract a virus from any other source as you are
from Archimedes World. We want YOUR program Not only do we
want your program but we're also willing to pay for it. We are
interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens,
animation, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples,
games, demos and anything else that is interesting and
original.
You should also note that RISC-OS applications stand the best
chance of publication. You should always send in your program
submissions complete with the submission form and a Stamped
Addressed Envelope. Submission forms can be found on this disk
and inside the magazine (photocopies are accepted). Program
submissions are usually processed within four weeks of receipt,
however you should allow up to six weeks for a reply as
software evaluation and testing can take quite some time.
Software Sale The standard of software on this cover disk is
very high and is typical of the quality of software which has
been published by Archimedes World (and A&B Computing) over the
last few years. To make sure that you have not missed out on
the excellent programs published previously look for the

full list of software, prices and details for ordering disks.
Software submissions which are too large for the cover disk can
still be published by means of our Software Catalogue. We can
make your software available to all our readers by means of
full colour advertising. So make sure that you submit your
programs to Archimedes World and get the best distribution and
remuneration possible.
