�CE SOIL TYPE IN CHIPSTEAD
In order to find the soil types in Chipstead I studied a
geographical map of the parish and got my infomation from there.
However, I already had a rough idea of the soil type because of the
varying amounts of drainage I had noticed around the parish. The
map said that there were three bands of soil in Chipstead and
these are marked on the map on the following page. Again, because
it is not possible to keep drawing the land use map, the normal
base map has been used. However, it is still simple to compare the
soil types to the land use on the other map. The two maps can be
seen together on the overlay mapping later on.
As can be seen from the map, the clay band runs North to
South roughly in the middle of the parish, surrounded by the two
chalk bands. I already knew about the drainage propeties of the two
types of soil - chalk lets water pass through it wheras clay tends
to retain water. This can be seen by looking at the site of the
ponds in Chipstead. They are all in the clay band because that is
where it is the wettest. I also think that the houses in Chipstead
grew up from this clay band because it was a convenient water
supply.
The land in the chalk bands tends to be much drier, because
of the drainage propeties of the soil. The Long Plantation (see
above) lies in this band and by looking at photograph C at the back
you can see how dry this is - it is even called 'The Dry Valley'.
The bands are actually supposed to extend further north and south,
and by this it can be seen that woodland and pastoral fields are
mainly in the chalk bands wheras the grassland and arable fields
are mainly in the clay band. I think this is because fields for
grazing don't need to be watered as much as fields for growing
crops in. Housing seems to occur in both bands and I think that is
because nowadays we can cope with all different types of soil for
building on so it doesn't really matter. Finally, more explanations
