This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Word Wizard is a multi-tasking crossword solver. To use it
simply enter the known letters of a word into the spaces
provided at the top of the window, set the word length to
the correct size by clicking on the up/down arrows and then
click 'Find'.
Word Wizard will spend a few moments looking through its
word-list, and will then come up with a list of all the
words of the length specified which contain the letters
specified in the correct places. (You must know at least one
letter of a word before you may carry out a search.)
Any words that have been found will appear in the smaller
window on the left. The window can be scrolled up and down
so that large lists can be viewed.
| The WordWizard Dictionary.
The look-up words used by Word Wizard are held in two
files inside the !WordWiz directory. These files are
'CompDict' and 'Additions'.
'CompDict' is the standard Word Wizard word-list. It is
stored in a compacted form, and contains the vast majority
of the words. It should NOT be altered in any way.
The 'Additions' word-list is a much smaller list. It is
searched by Word-Wizard in exactly the same way as the main
dictionary. It contains any words which are not in the main
dictionary. It can be used for placing people`s names, place
names, and specialist or unusual words which would not be
found in a normal dictionary. Feel free to add any words
which you find missing from the main Word Wizard dictionary
into the additions list.
| WordWizard options
Options for WordWizard can be set in the !Run file. They
are set near the end of file in the line :
Set Wizard$Opts 1:1:5:50
Each number effects the working and running of WordWizard
By changing these numbers you may :
* Choose to skip the introduction window (useful on a hard
disc where the program loads very quickly).
(0-No intro window, 1-Display intro window)
* Choose fancy or plain appearance to the intro screen.
(0-Plain appearance, 1-Fancy appearance)
* Alter the multi tasking speed of the search routines. A
high number will produce a fast search, but with less
responsive multi tasking. A low number will produce more
responsive multi tasking, but with slower search times.
Don't expect this option to have a huge effect as, due to
the method used to search the dictionary the speed of the
multi-tasking is largely linked to the number of words that
the search routines are finding.

* Alter the maximum size of the temporary dictionary in words.
(Any number from 0 to 999)
| NOTES
* Any words added to the additions list should be entered in
UPPER CASE only.
* Word Wizard is not equipped to remove multiple copies of
words. You should not add words to the additions word-list
without first checking that they do NOT appear in the main
dictionary.
* Lines in the additions dictionary that begin with the |
character are ignored by Word Wizard. You may, if you wish,
when adding words to this list, insert sub-headings to allow
you to identify which words were added when, and by whom.
* The number of words that can be held by the additions
dictionary is specified by the options (see above). Any words
in the additions dictionary above number the specified number
will be ignored.
