Chapter 1 Manual use/ Introduction 1.1 Manual Guide-lines There are specific types of highlighting used in this manual, to make it easier to use. Here are explanations of the various types: References to other chapters are in blue. Clicking with Select on these will take you to the relevant section. eg. Chapter 6 - Processing an Image . Clicking with Adjust on this window (ie. the text viewer), or pressing Escape takes you to the previous section looked at. If there are no previous sections, this window is closed. Filenames, directories, applications, emphasized words, and keyboard, mouse button, window, menu and icon references are in pale yellow. eg. !OptclPro, Sprites., Select, Menu, Return, Choices window, Info..., OK. References to Optical Professional are abbreviated to just Optical. The cursor keys, Page Up , Page Down etc. can be used to scroll the window as well as the scroll bar when the title bar is highlighted yellow (Click on the window if it is not.) Clicking with Menu over this window brings up a menu with options which can be selected to take you to different sections of the current chapter. 1.2 About Optical Professional Optical Professional is an advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system - It can scan pages of text and tables from paper documents, books, magazines etc., and translate them into an editable form for use in text editors, word processors, databases etc. But why use such a system? Well, the average typist can only enter about 40 words per minute, and a lot of people, not even this many. Copying large quantities of text can also be very laborious work. Optical however, can read over 1000 words per minute, and only a couple of mouse clicks are required to get it going. It also multi-tasks, allowing the user to run other applications on the computer at the same time. Text comes in many forms of typefaces, layouts, and colours but Optical's many powerful features allow it to cope with virtually all circumstances, in the easiest possible way. We hope you find this software as useful as we think it is, and save hours of typing and worn fingers. 1.3 RISC OS This manual assumes that you are familiar with the use of standard RISC OS applications. If you do not know how to use floppy discs or the windowing system on your computer, then you should read the Welcome Guide that came with your machine. 1.4 Purchasing Optical Optical Professional is normally available at �149 all inclusive. However if you order quoting the code AUOPD1 the package is available to you at a specially reduced price of only �119 all inclusive . This offer expires at the end of the month following the month of the magazine this demo came with. 1.5 Upgrading earlier versions of Optical If you own version 3.50 or greater of Optical then you are entitled to a free upgrade to version 4 . Simply send both your discs back to us and we will upgrade them for you. If you own an earlier version than 3.50 then an upgrade costs �14.95 , but includes a new manual. 1.6 Upgrading from other OCR packages It is also possible to upgrade from other Acorn OCR packages costing over �50. Simply return the original package to us with a cheque for �59 , and you will be posted the complete Optical Professional package. 1.7 Future related releases Look out for our Optical Music Recognition package, due for release in the near future.
