Harvey/!MastMind/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

This is a version of the old board game. Upon loading its icon appears on the icon bar.
For those of you who don't know how to play Mastermind (yes, both of you) the computer chooses a line of four random colours which you have to try and guess by choosing colours yourself and getting the computer to "mark" your guesses. A black peg means that you have one colour in the right place, and a white peg means that you have a right colour but in the wrong place. The first few guesses will have to be fairly random, but you can usually work out the first peg (at least) after five goes (you get 10).

I will now explain how to play.
On pressing "Menu", a menu appears with two options, Info and Quit. Going across the Info arrow leads to a familiar Info box, but with an extra icon in the corner. Clicking on this icon leads to a further info box, with some fantastic graphics drawn by my brother Ben.
Clicking on "Quit" removes the application from the icon bar.

Clicking on the icon bar icon opens three windows:
The main window has all the functions you would expect: clicking Select on any of the icons on the current row (see the red arrow), or dragging a colour from the piece window puts the piece on that space, and clicking Adjust puts a space (should you need it). Clicking on the red arrow will mark the current line, and move the arrow up a line. When you get to the last line and still have not solved the puzzle, four more icons are revealed at the top which show you the solution. If you do solve the puzzle, the line at the top is revealed as well.
To select a new piece to be the current one, go to the window marked "Icons" and click on any one of the 12 pieces on the top row. Initially, some are shaded and are not clickable, but you can select any of the top 8 to start with. The current piece is shown at all times in the bottom of the icons window, for easy reference.
The other (rather horribly coloured) window shows the score (in games won).
The observant among you will have noticed four small circles above each of the columns. These provide a "hold" facility and are quite useful. When you click on one, it turns red and this indicates that that column is "held" - when a line is marked, any held pieces from that line are automatically transferred on to the next line, and if you click on any of the pieces of the line before the current one, any held pieces are transferred in the same way.

If you press Menu on the main window, a menu appears showing the various options available.
The first is "New game" - this you press if you want to give up, or have reached the end of the columns, or have changed the skill levels and want to start afresh - doing this automatically increases the game total by one, so don't use it too much!
The second three change the skill level - "Easy" only allows the first four pieces, "Medium" (the default) only allows the first eight and "Hard" allows all twelve.
The next option is related to this and allows the computer to choose spaces in its line of four. This may not sound much, but it actually makes the game much harder by not allowing you to check pieces by putting them on their own with spaces.
The last option I put in to make the game a little more interesting. By default it is ticked, but if you click it (and untick it) all the icons change to the familiar Filer icons. You can get back at any time by reticking.

I think that that is about all that I have to say about this program - it is the first "real" desktop program that I ever wrote (it now being about a year since I finished it). If you like it, then please write to me at :

enclosing hellos, comments, bug reports, money (I wish!), ideas for new applications, PD software etc. I cannot guarantee replies because I have exams. this winter but I will bear any comments in mind for future versions or programs. I am willing to swap PD software (especially Trackers) - I am trying to build up a decent collection, so if anyone wants to swap some software then please write. Also if anyone has any hints or tips that might be useful to other people then please write and I will compile them all and hopefully release them all on one disc. Also if anyone has any manuals that they don't want then please send them to a poor impoverished young programmer (yours truly) who can't afford to shell out 100 for new ones.

Right, that's the boring bit over with. Time for some hellos...

Hello to everybody at Ashville - especially to my long-suffering music teachers, Mr. Dunford and Mr. Pashley, and to anybody else I know (Emma, Maha, Helen, James, Chris etc.). Hello also to Andrew, Edd, and anybody else who went to university last year.

Finally, I must just say thanks to my brother for doing the artwork in the second Info window (which is the reason that the program takes up so much space) and thanks to Mr. Williams for the use of the scanner.

Finally finally, just a quick plug for a music program I have found - Digital Symphony is the only decent package for composing Trackers - it is brilliant, especially the demo. tunes.

Finally got around to changing the program. Now you can drag the icons from the icon window instead of clicking twice in two different windows.
