INDENTED LISTINGS
Those who program in PASCAL or other highly structured
languages know the benefits of indenting lines of program to
emphasise the presence of the various control structures.
There's nothing wrong with programming in BASIC if one
learns good work habits - unfortunately all too rare a
thing. This is an attempt to take a program in BBC BASIC
and produce neatly indented copy rather than the garbled
mess which listings more often resemble.
Anything which encourages the proper blocking of for .. next
loops must help, and proper indentation of IF statements
might clarify what exactly IS happening when further IFs
appear elsewhere on the same line.
The standards adopted for indenting are as follows:
Line number : 5 spaces
One space thereafter
Two spaces per REPEAT
Two spaces per FOR
The above applies globally, i.e. the affects last from one
line to another.
Two spaces per THEN or ELSE
This indent only applies to then line you are on at the
moment.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
This is how to get a neat listing of your program, with long
lines split up into separate instructions on separate lines,
and procedure names highlighted in red on the screen, and
double width on the printer.
1. CHAIN "Lister1" (or if using a Network, CHAIN "Lister2")
2. Wait while the program loads some data from a file
called "FILE".
3. When the computer asks you for a directory, type in its
name.
4. This will be repeated until you see the desired
directory catalogued on the screen.
5. If you are in the desired directory, press return on
its own.
6. The directory you have selected will be re-displayed.
The computer asks you for the name of the program.
Type it in.
7. The computer asks you for a starting line number. To
list the whole program, type in 0, or simply press
return.
8. The program asks you for the width you want the listing
printed. If you're using the screen only, I suggest
35 to 39. If you're using the printer, I suggest 60
to 70. Type in the required width.
9. The computer asks you whether you want to use the
printer. Answer YES or NO - you can shorten this to Y
or N.
10. If you want to use the printer, the computer asks you
if you want to print via econet - answer YES or NO.
11. The computer lists your program for you. This
operates more slowly than a normal listing, because all
the checking which is normally done very quickly in
machine code, is now being done by LISTER.
12. Press ESCAPE if something goes wrong. The file you
were using will be closed down, and you will skip to
stage 13.
13. When the listing stops the computer asks you if you
want another go. Answer YES or NO. If you answer
YES or Y then you will return to the stage of selecting
another directory and program. If you answer NO or N
then the program stops.
HOW TO CUSTOMISE THIS PROGRAM
As it stands, the programs Lister2 and Lister3 have been
designed to work via ECONET. They require a number of
alterations if they are to work with a standard DFS. The
version "Lister1" has already had these modifications
carried out, and is available for immediate use by
non-network DFS users.
Firstly, lines 190, 200 and 300 are net-specific. If you are
using the DFS or ADFS these should be deleted before the
program is run.
Secondly, with a DFS catalogue being confined to 31 files,
there's no point in selecting directories or subdirectories.
Therefore delete lines 390 to 450. DO NOT succumb to the
temptation to delete line 380 - it matches with the UNTIL at
line 770.
A third point for NET or ADFS users: when you download the
program LISTER and its associated file FILE, these may well
not end up in the main directory, as I have assumed. You
should alter line 240 to follow the path to the directory
where you have placed it. For example:

If you don't understand how pathnames work, then select the
root directory ( *DIR $ ) and download FILE from Teletext
again.
Lastly for NFS users: If you are using a BBC model B, you
will already be aware that transmission rates round the
network can sometimes seem to be very slow. This is because
each byte of data is individually packaged prior to
transmission. Line 200 refers to a machine code utility
available from SJ Research or MUSE. If you don't have it,
you can delete this line, and 190, 300 as well.
Lister3 is a fully documented version for those wishing to
study the routines.
