This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Licence

FDBackup is SHAREWARE, and is � Francis Devereux 1995-1996.
You may not modify any part of FDBackup.
You may use FDBackup for 20 days from the date you received it, then you must either register or delete all your copies of FDBackup.
When you register, you will be sent the latest version of FDBackup2, and registered users can obtain the latest version of FDBackup by sending a formatted disc and SAE to the author. If I get connected to the internet I may provide upgrades using email - if you would like to receive upgrades this way then please fill in an email address on your registration form.

Introduction
������������
FDBackup 2 is a program that �Backs up� the files on your hard disc on to floppies in case the hard disc is corrupted. Here is a list of its key features :
� FDBackup allows you to backup your entire hard disc or just part of it.
� Fully desktop-based.
� Files to be backed up can be chosen using drag and drop.
� Incremental backup - you can backup only the files that you have created/modified after your last backup.
� FDBackup is faster than the normal �filer copy�.
� FDBackup compresses data using Squash, making it take up a smaller number of discs.
� Backup files can be given any �standard� name.
� Interactive help supported.
� All settings can be saved.
� Files can be spread over several discs - useful for transferring large files between computers. This also means that there is no wasted space at the end of discs.
� Files or directories can be left out of the backup, this is useful if you want to backup your DOS partition separately.

The Backup Window
�����������������
The backup window can be opened either by selecting �Backup...� from the icon bar menu or by dragging a directory to the icon bar icon.

Source Directory
����������������
The source directory icon in the backup window allows you to specify which directory you want to backup.
Dragging a directory here (or to the icon bar icon) enters the directory�s name into the icon, holding down CTRL whilst dragging the directory here enters its parent�s name into the icon - for example dragging �ADFS::IDEDisc4.$.Apps� to the icon bar icon whilst holding down CTRL will enter �ADFS::IDEDisc4.$� into the �Source directory� icon.

Only include
������������
The only include files / dirs icon in the backup window allow you to back up only the files specified in the include files setup window.
When the only include option is on, only the files in the include files setup window (opened by clicking on the �setup� icon) are included in the backup.
N.B. Only files / dirs within the Source directory can be included in the backup (an error will be given if you try to drag other files / dirs to this window).

Exclude files
�������������
The exclude files / dirs icons in the backup window allow you to exclude files or directories from the backup. (e.g. PC emulator hard disc files, temporary directories)
When the exclude files option is on, the files in the exclude files setup window (opened by clicking on the �setup� icon) are not included in the backup.

Destination
�����������
The destination icons in the backup window allow you to specify where your files will be backed up to.
Clicking on the menu icon to the right of the filename icon will open a save box, enter the name for your backup file(s) into this box then drag the backup file icon to a (root directory) filer window. The save box will close and the pathname of the backup file will be entered into the destination filename icon.

Technical notes on backup destination
The filename is �generalised� - disc names are replaced with drive numbers so that more than one disc can be used. This means that the SWI prefix of the filing system must be found, then the SWIs �<fs_prefix>_Drives� and �<fs_prefix>_DescribeDisc� must be used. This means that if the filing system doesn�t have these SWIs (or a FreeSpace SWI) then it can�t be used as a destination.
Of the filing systems that I have tested, ADFS: and RAM: work but net: and Mem: do not, I have not been able to test FDBackup with high density filing systems for older computers (but it works with standard HD discs), if you have any problems please write to me with information on your filing system (SWIs etc.) and I should be able to write a work-around solution.

Format discs
������������
When the format discs option in the backup window is selected, (floppy) discs are formatted in the format given in the icon to the right of the 'Format discs' option button before they are used by FDBackup. Use �F� format for 1.6 Mb discs or �E� format for 800 Kb discs.
N.B. All files on the discs used will be permanently destroyed (even if they are locked)

Wipe discs
����������
When the wipe discs option in the backup window is selected, (floppy) discs are wiped before they are used by FDBackup.
N.B. All files on the discs used will be destroyed (even if they are locked)

Backup type
�����������
New
The new option in the backup window �Backup type� menu allows you to create a new backup including all files/directories in the source directory (except those which have been excluded)

Continue
The continue option in the backup window �Backup type� menu allows you to continue with a (new) backup which you aborted or during which the computer crashed.
When you are asked to insert the �last backup disc� you should insert the disc before the disc during which the error occurred.

Update
Incremental update
The update option in the backup window �Backup type� menu allows you to update a backup by only adding files with a later datestamp than the backup file i.e.. only adding files created or modified after the most recent backup or updating of the backup file.

Differential update
When this option is set, updates will include all files created after the first backup was made, and will start at the position on the backup discs where this first backup finished (when this option is off only files created after the most recent update was performed will be added).
N.B. files copied from floppies etc. will have datestamps from when they were originally created, so they may not be included when you use the update option. The add dir option is provided to allow you to add directories that have been �ignored�.

Add dir
The add dir option in the backup window �Backup type� menu allows you to add a directory to an existing backup without affecting the backup�s datestamp.
This option can be used to add directories that have been copied onto your hard disc and have older datestamps than your backup file. It is best if you update your backup, copy the data from the floppy to your hard disc, then use add dir to add the new directory.

Update unstamped
����������������
Always
When the always option in the backup window �Update unstamped� menu is selected, all unstamped files will be added to the backup when it is updated.
This option is useful if you want to update your backup and ensure that no files are missed, but you will almost certainly add some files to the backup that are already there.

Never
When the never option in the backup window �Update unstamped� menu is selected, no unstamped files will be added to the backup when it is updated.
This option is useful if you want to update your backup quickly and know that no unstamped files have been written to your hard disc since you last performed a backup.

Prompt
When the prompt option in the backup window �Update unstamped� menu is selected, you will be asked whether to backup each unstamped file found.
This option is useful if you don�t have many unstamped files and want to update your backup with exactly the files you need, but if you have a lot of unstamped files on your hard disc this option can be very time-consuming (and annoying).
Hint for experts: Try setting the type of unstamped files containing data, not program code, to data before you perform your first backup (if you know what you are doing!), but keep a copy of the original files just in case.

The Catalogue Window

This window can be opened either by selecting �Catalogue...� from the the icon bar menu or by holding down CTRL and double-clicking a backup file.
If you opened the window by holding down CTRL and double-clicking a backup file it�s name will be shown in the �Backup file� icon, otherwise drag the backup file you wish to catalogue to this icon.

Backup file
�����������
This icon shows the backup file to be catalogued. You can select a different backup file by dragging it to this icon.

Only catalogue
��������������
When this option is set only files whose names start with the text in the icon to the right will be catalogued. Wildcards can be used in this text if the Allow wildcards... option is set.

Allow wildcards
���������������
When this option is set the �#� and �*� wildcards can be used in the �Only catalogue� icon.
# matches any one character
* matches any sequence of characters, including nothing (to match at least one character use �#*�)

The restore window
������������������
This window can be opened either by selecting �Restore...� from the icon bar menu or by double-clicking a backup file.

Backup file
�����������
If you opened the window by double-clicking a backup file it�s name will be shown in the �Backup file� icon, otherwise drag the backup file you wish to restore to this icon.

Only restore
������������
If you only want to restore part of your backup you can either drag the object to be restored from a filer window to the �Only restore� writable icon (if it is still there...) or type the full name of the object, using the correct case into the �Only restore� writable icon.

Allow wildcards
���������������
When this option is set the �#� and �*� wildcards can be used in the �Only restore� icon.

Change root
�����������
The �Change root� icon allows you to change the root directory of the backup, for example if you backed up �ADFS::IDEDisc4.$.TIFFS� on one computer and wanted to put the files you backed up in the �ADFS::MyDisc.$.Graphics.TIFFS� directory on another computer you would open the �ADFS::MyDisc.$.Graphics.TIFFS� filer window, click on the icon to the right of the �Change root� icon and drag the backup file icon in the save box to the �ADFS::MyDisc.$.Graphics.TIFFS� filer window - this should enter �ADFS::MyDisc.$.Graphics.TIFFS� into the �Change root� icon - then make sure the �Change root� radio button was ticked.

Overwrite locked files
����������������������
The �Overwrite locked files� icon allows you to overwrite files that are already on the hard disc and are locked, when it is selected the files in the backup will always replace files with the same name already on the hard disc even if the files on the hard disc are locked.

Overwrite existing files
������������������������
These icons specify what happens if a file which is being restored already exists on the hard disc.
If the Always option is set then files on the hard disc are always overwritten.
If the Never option is set then files on the hard disc are never overwritten.
If the Newer option is set then files on the hard disc are overwritten if the file in the backup file is newer than the file on the hard disc.

The Options Window
������������������
This window can be opened by selecting �Options...� from the icon bar menu.

Desktop display
���������������
When the desktop display option in the options window is set, FDBackup will operate entirely in the desktop, multi tasking if the Multi-task icon is selected. This option is the best for general use, especially as you can perform tasks like verifying discs when FDBackup is waiting for you to insert the next disc. The desktop display is slightly slower than the full screen display.

Full screen display
�������������������
When the full screen display option in the options window is set, FDBackup will take over the whole screen whilst performing backup/catalogue/restore operations. The full screen display does not multi-task, and you should use the �Use mode� option with mode 0 to ensure correct formatting of text. The full screen display is slightly faster than the desktop display.

Verbose
�������
When the verbose option in the options window is set, FDBackup will display information about files as they are being backed up, restored or catalogued. Turning this option off will speed up desktop backups slightly, desktop restorations significantly, and full-screen backups and restorations very slightly, but cataloguing a backup with the verbose option off is pointless!

Multi-task
����������
When the multi-task option in the options window is set, FDBackup will multi-task during backups, restorations and catalogues. Turning this option off does not produce a noticeable increase in speed.
N.B. Multi-tasking only works with desktop display, not with full screen display.

Fill discs at start
�������������������
When the �Fill discs at start� option in the options window is set, FDBackup will create a file the size of the (floppy) disc before writing any data to the disc. This speeds up writing to floppy discs because it means that the backup file does not need to be extended every ~64K, requiring the disc heads to move to the catalogue information then back to the current position in the file. This option should be on for large backups, but for small backups (e.g. Pocket Books) it can be turned off.

RETURN clicks OK
����������������
When the �RETURN clicks OK� option in the options window is set, FDBackup will simulate a click on the default icon (usually �OK� or �YES�) in its most recently opened window when RETURN is pressed.
This option should not be used if you wish to type text into other applications whilst making a backup because it is very easy to accidentally press RETURN at the �Please insert disc XX into drive YY� prompt and overwrite the disc in the drive, leaving you with a �missing� backup disc.

Use mode
��������
When the Use mode option in the options window is set, FDBackup will change to the specified screen mode before a backup/catalogue/restoration and change back to the original screen mode afterwards. If a low-quality mode (i.e. mode 0) is used then the speed of the backup is increased.

Save config file
����������������
Clicking on the �Save config file� popup icon in the options window opens a window which allows you to save a file containing the current settings, including the filenames etc. in the backup, restore and catalogue windows. Double clicking on one of these config files or dragging it to FDBackup�s icon bar icon will read the settings in the file. It is useful to have a config file for each device you backup as this saves you from having to set up FDBackup every time you want to backup a different device.

Save choices
������������
Clicking on the �Save choices� icon in the options window will save the current settings, including the filenames etc. in the backup, restore and catalogue windows, to the !FDBackup.Choices file, from where they will be read when FDBackup is next loaded.
