Help/FindBadSec

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

           ** FINDBADSEC **

  FINDBADSEC will search through a
specified part of a disc to find any
bad sectors (ie areas of the disc that
cannot be read from or written to, and
will cause 'Disc Error' messages when
any attempt is made to access them ).

You can then remove these from the
Free Space Map so that they no longer
appear to exist, using the HARDERROR
utility program - see the help file for
HARDERROR.

You will be asked to specify the disc
you wish to test and the first & last
sectors between which the search is to
be made. If a bad sector is encountered
the sector number and the type of error
will be displayed. Disc error numbers
are listed in the User Guide.

The program will continue looking for
bad sectors, until either no more are
found, or the screen is full, in which
case you will be prompted as to whether
or not you wish to continue.

If you find more than a few bad sec-
tors, you would be well advised to stop
using the disc as soon as possible.

If track 0 ( which contains the Free
Space Map and Root Directory ) is cor-
rupted, then the program will not run.
However, in such a case, the disc would
be too badly corrupted to recover and
would need to be re-formatted.
