This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

================================================
Introduction
============
Lexique is more than just a language dictionary, it contains over 2,500 entries consisting of corresponding French and English words and phrases with grammatical help and typical usage within context. Intended primarily for use in GCSE, Lexique has all entries split in the main GCSE topic headings, making it possible to use smaller groups of words appropriate to the area being
covered. Students can even add entries to Lexique thus building up their own personal dictionary, making Lexique both a flexible and easy way to explore the language.
Selecting The Language
======================
When the main window is open you will have the opportunity at any time to swap the display between French (Fran�ais) and English (Anglais) by clicking select on the appropriate icon, this means that all text associated with Lexique will appear in the selected language.
French Characters
=================
Some of the letters of the French alphabet are not on the keyboard and therefore become difficult to type in. To get round this click select on the Function keys (Touches de fonction) option on the icon bar menu. This will open a window displaying all the nessecary letters you are likely to need.
To type any of the letters in simply click select over the one you want or press the appropriate function key using the Ctrl or Shift keys as shown.
Finding A Word
==============
To find a word just click select in the icon with the blue border, a flashing caret will appear and you can now type in the word you want to find. If you don't know how to spell the word then just type in the first few letters. Now click select on the Find (Recherche) icon or simply press return to search for the word.
When a match is found the word and associated information will appear in the remaining boxes in the main window. If you misspelt the word it may be in the list at the top of the main window, if so then simply click select on the word you require and it will be transferred into the four information boxes.
Adding Words
============
You may find it necessary to add words of your own or even to add a word twice but with two meanings. To do this click select on the Add (Nouveau) icon in the main window, this will open the add window.
To add a new word simply click select on the Clear (D�gager) icon to clear the information boxes then type in the new word you want to add. To add the same word with a different meaning then enter the word in the icon with the blue border the same and the remaining information for the second meaning.
You also need to set the topic heading(s) under which the word appears. To do this click menu over the Select Groups (Groupes) icon and using select again tick the relevant groups. (See page 6 for more information on setting topic groups.) Now click select on the Add (Nouveau) icon to add the word to the dictionary.
Deleting Words
==============
To remove a word from Lexique, type in the word as you would when finding a word but click select on the Delete (Effacer) icon in the main window.
If there is more than one entry for the word you will be asked which one you want to remove. After you confirm this, or if there is only one entry, the delete window is opened.
You are shown the word and all the related information, clicking select on the Groups (Groupes) icon allows you to see which topic groups the word is in. You can then choose to remove the word by clicking select on the Delete (Effacer) icon or keep the word by clicking select on the Cancel (Annuler) icon.
Changing Words
==============
To make a change to a word or it's associated information simply follow the procedure for adding a word but click select on the Replace (Remplacer) icon in the Add window instead of the Add (Nouveau) icon. If there are multiple entries for the word you are trying to replace, then you will be asked to confirm which one is to be replaced.
The Replace window will then open giving you the information for the Current Word (Mot courant) and the Replacement Word (Mot nouveau), and allowing you to compare the topic groups each word is in before you confirm the replacement by clicking select on the Replace (Remplacer) icon.
Topic Groups
============
One of the main features of Lexique is the ability to have smaller groups of topic-based words selected. Lexique operates in exactly the same way regardless of the number of groups selected, and there is no limit on which groups you can select.
The groups are aimed at covering the main areas such as people, home, travel, etc. and most of the groups have sub groups, meaning most words can easily be related to a particular group.
By clicking menu over the main window you can set which of the groups and sub-groups you wish to use. In this example the groups selected are Temps and Voyages, but only rue and voiture have been selected in the sub-group of Voyages.
When Lexique is first loaded All (Tout) will be selected, try clicking select on People (Gens) and see what happens to the list of words in the main window.
Saving Alterations
==================
If you add, delete or change a word in Lexique then an * will appear in the title bar of the main window. This is a reminder that you will need to save these changes so they're not lost when you quit. To save any changes click menu over the Lexique icon on the icon bar then click select on Save (Sauver), this will save the changes and remove the * from the title bar. If you do forget to save and try to quit Lexique then you will be asked if you want to save or not.
Transferring Words
==================
When you find a word in Lexique you want to use in another application to save time and to avoid typing errors you can transfer the word directly from Lexique. To do this simply click and hold down select over the word in the word list and drag this to the application you want to use it in. Large groups of words can be transferred by dragging the textfile icon from the Save as window into the application you are using. (see page 8 for more information on saving text.)
Note : Not all applications are capable of accepting data in this way, it is advised that you try this feature with applications before using large amounts of data.
Printing/Saving Text
====================
There are certain occasions when you may want to save or print out a list of words and/or information associated with the words for use in other applications or just as a simple vocabulary list.
To save text move through the arrow to the right of the Save Text option on the icon bar menu. The Save as (Sauver comme) window will open.
You have the option of saving French words (Mots Fran�ais) and/or English words (Mots Anglais) with or without Information (Renseignement). To set the options just click select on the square next to the option. Next type in the filename and drag the textfile icon to a disc catalogue window to save the file.
To print the file first load the printer driver software (see application guide). Now follow the procedure for saving a file to disc, but instead of dragging the textfile icon to a disc catalogue window drag it to the printer driver icon on the icon bar.
