{!index Introduction}
This silly thing will play a {�sound sample}
recorded during the landing of the space
shuttle. It was recorded on an Apple
Macintosh. Just {�DoubleClick} with {�select}
on the {�application}. It will terminate
after playing the {�sample}.
The programme sets up he voices, tuning
and timing needed, and starts the sound.
After that it will take about 15 seconds
to play the sample during which you can
preform any other (boot) activities.
Finally {�poll-idlle} will promt the
programme to quit and release the memory
used. As the voice module is quite large
this is a neccessity rather than luxery.

Soundsamples generally come in various tastes,
however the can be described as a long list
of values, representing a certain 'volume'
which is send to the sound system.
This is done very quickly, several thousands
of values a second. As these values tend to
change quickly, so does the 'volume' of your
speaker. i.e. the speaker starts vibrating.
The trick is of course to control this 'vi-
bration'. This is very similar to what is done
on a record. The tiny grooves contain small
vibrations which are send, grossly enlarged,
to the speaker.
A regular vibration, a 'sine wave' shaped
variation for example send to the speaker
at sufficient speed, will be heard as a
tone. The shape often inherits a lot from
the machine which made the sound. A piano
snare will give lovely shaped flowing
waves, like small or large waves in a quiet
pond. A 'sreek', for example a piese of chalk
on the blackbord making that well known terible
noice has a mush more violent charactar, sharp
peaks quickly rising up, disturbing the
lovely shape.
Suppose a groove on a record, like this one,
imagine it to be a continious curve :

This is often, althoug not exactly correctly,
called 'digitalizing' a analoque signal.
In a computer the 2122...22 sequece is often
called a sample. It is stored digitally along
with some other data telling the player-
programme about the speed, time, and
quatisizing method.
The player programme simply sends the values to
a digital to analoque converter. Each number
is translated to a voltage. This rapidly varing
voltage is the audio signal.
In this {�application} the 'module' contains
both the sample data, the long strings of
values send to the speaker and the player
programme which knows how to send the string
of values, and at what speed.

Really. I've to refer you to the welcome
quide for all this, and I do not understand
how you've got here in the first place..
However, just to be on the safe side..
The mouse has three buttons, called, from
left to right, SELECT, MENU, and ADJUST.
Pressing a button is called Clicking, pressing
it twice, very quicly, whilst not moving the
mouse, a major feat!, is called double clicking.

An application is a programme.
It appears in the 'filer' window as a little
picture, a landing shuttle this time, with
a name, preceeded by a pling underneath.
You can run an application by {�DoubleClick}-
ing with {�select} on it.
You can ask help by pressing {�Menu} over it,
and moving to the second leaf menu, from the
top, with the 'Help' item appearing at the
bottom of the list.
The application lives in a directory along
with its frieds, special files with well-
defined names. You can open the directory
by {�DoubleClick}ing with {�select} on it
whilst holding the SHIFT key.

Do not you love them !!
Here is what you need.
- a spare afternoon
- NO computer
- 2 apples, grannies will do.
- 300 gram of flour.
- 200 gram of butter, margerine.
- 100 gram of brown sugar.
This is for a SMALLish pie, multiply the last
four items, but not the first two by any
'real' number you like.
Mix the last three ingredients well. Add a
wee but of salt and perhaps a bit of
lemon(scrapings). Put a fifth of this smooth
paste apart and spread the big lump thinly
in a pie-tin, (or any other shape...)
Slice the apples into tiny bits, thins slices
look best. Add plenty of raizins, a bit of
sugar, lemonjuice, and canel. Mix well. Make
sure it is not toooo wet.
Throw this in the pie tin. Use the remainder
of the paste to make a nice netting, or any
other covering, and spread this over the
apple/raizin mix.
Put all this into the oven, 4-6 , wait for
about 45 minutes. Heat up some apricot jam,
when it starts melting, pour it out over the
cake. Add a bit of fresh clotted cream with
lots of sugar, just before serving....
