auto.docs

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

"ROGRAMMING AND TEXT BY OMINIC ORD.
"
" VEN IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF
"AUTOSTEREOGRAMS BEFORE, YOU HAVE
"ALMOST CERTAINLY SEEN ONE AT SOME
"POINT. HEY ARE MOST COMMONLY KNOWN
"FROM THE 'AGIC YE' BOOKS PUBLISHED
"A FEW YEARS BACK. OW, USING THIS
"PROGRAM, YOU CAN GENERATE YOUR OWN,
"AND HYPNOTISE YOURSELF AND YOUR
"FRIENDS TRYING TO SEE THEM!
" T A FIRST GLANCE, AN
"AUTOSTEREOGRAM LOOKS LIKE A STRANGE
"PATTERN OF DOTS, OR PICTURES. OR
"THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO SEE THE 3
"IMAGES ON THE OTHER HAND, AN AMAZING
"NEW SHAPE COMES OUT OF THE PAGE. HE
"SECRET OF MAKING THE 3 SURFACE COME
"OUT IS TO LOOK AT THE PAGE, BUT HAVE
"YOUR EYES FOCUSED NOT ON THE PAGE,
"BUT BEHIND IT (THUS MAKING THE
"PATTERN ON THE PAGE OUT OF FOCUS).
" OST AUTOSTEREOGRAMS ARE
"REPEATING HORIZONTAL PATTERNS, WHERE
"THE PATTERN HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH
"WHAT IS IN THE 3 IMAGE. HOSE
"PRODUCED ON YOUR 64 ARE SLIGHTLY
"DIFFERENT IN THAT THEY ARE IN BLACK
"AND WHITE AS OPPOSED TO COLOUR, AND
"THEY ARE JUST REPEATED RANDOM
"PATTERNS OF DOTS, AS OPPOSED TO
"REPEATING PICTURES. HE IMAGES ARE
"MONOCHROME BECAUSE THIS ALLOWS THE
"RESOLUTION TO BE DOUBLE THAT
"AVAILABLE IN MULTICOLOUR, AND SO THE
"AUTOSTEREOGRAMS PRODUCED ARE
"GENERALLY EASIER TO SEE.
"
"
"
" 1. IRST, YOU MUST DESIGN THE 3
"SURFACE ON A GRAPHICS PROGRAM WHICH
"ALLOWS YOU TO SAVE 8 BITMAP FILES.
"WO DEMONSTRATION DESIGNS ARE
"INCLUDED ON THE DISK (SEE
"BELOW FOR DETAILS). OUR DESIGN CAN
"BE EITHER MONOCHROME (2 COLOR) OR
"MULTICOLOR (4 COLOR). IFFERENT
"COLORS ARE RAISED OUT OF THE PAGE BY
"DIFFERENT AMOUNTS. HESE AMOUNTS CAN
"BE SET WITHIN THE CALCULATING
"PROGRAM.
"
" :
"
"- ON'T MAKE YOUR DESIGN TOO
"COMPLICATED, BECAUSE FINE DETAIL IS
"OFTEN LOST.
"- OTICE THAT THE LEFT 64 PIXELS (8
"CHARACTERS) OF THE SCREEN ARE NOT
"PROCESSED.
"- ETAIL CLOSE TO THE EDGE CAN BE
"DIFFICULT TO SEE.
"
" 2. OAD UP AUTOSTEREOGRAM
"GENERATOR. NTER THE FILENAME OF THE
"IMAGE TO BE LOADED AND SELECT WHETHER
"IT WAS DESIGNED IN 2 OR 4 COLORS.
"ETAILS OF THE TWO DEMONSTRATION
"FILES ARE BELOW:
"
"'' - 2 COLOR
"'' - 4 COLOR
"
" 3. O VIEW THE BITMAP YOU HAVE
"LOADED, SELECT ' '
" 4. O ALTER THE HEIGHT TO WHICH
"COLORS ARE RAISED FROM THE PAGE,
"SELECT ' '. GUIDE TO
"THE COLOR NUMBERS IS BELOW:
"
"#
"0 BACKGROUND BACKGROUND 0
"1 UNUSED MULTICOLOR 1 3
"2 FOREGROUND MULTICOLOR 2 6
"3 UNUSED FOREGROUND 9
"
" ENERALLY, IT IS BEST TO KEEP
"COLOR HEIGHTS BETWEEN 0 AND 15. OTE
"THAT THE HEIGHT OF COLOR 0
"(BACKGROUND) CANNOT BE ALTERED.
"
" 5. O CALCULATE AN
"AUTOSTEREOGRAM, SELECT '
"'. HIS TAKES A COUPLE
"OF MINUTES, AND DURING THIS TIME A
"CLOCK COUNTS DOWN. FTERWARDS YOU ARE
"RETURNED TO THE MAIN MENU, AND CAN
"SELECT TO SAVE THE IMAGE, OR TO VIEW
"IT.
" 6. O SEE YOUR AUTOSTEREOGRAM,
"YOU MUST FOCUS BEHIND THE IMAGE. F
"YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE IT
"MAY TAKE A WHILE TO GET THE
"TECHNIQUE. PERSONALLY FIND THE
"EASIEST METHOD IS AS FOLLOWS:
"
"- RING THE IMAGE SO CLOSE TO YOUR
"FACE THAT YOU CANNOT FOCUS UPON IT.
"- RAW IT SLOWLY BACK, BEING CAREFUL
"NOT TO FOCUS ON THE PATTERN.
"- RY NOT TO BLINK, AND THE IMAGE
"SHOULD APPEAR.
"- OME PEOPLE FIND THIS EASIER THAN
"OTHERS. F YOU REALLY CANNOT SEE THE
"IMAGE, YOU MAY BE ONE OF THE 10% OF
"THE POPULATION WHO WILL NEVER SEE
"ONE, BECAUSE THEIR EYES ARE NOT
"TRICKED BY THE IMAGE.
"- S SAID BEFORE, AUTOSTEREOGRAMS
"REPEAT THEMSELVES IN HORIZONTALLY.
"HE AIM WHEN TRYING TO SEE ONE IS TO
"FOCUS ONE EYE UPON ONE POINT IN THE
"PATTERN, AND THE OTHER ON THE SAME
"POINT IN THE NEXT REPEAT. F YOUR
"EYES ARE UNUSUALLY CLOSE TOGETHER OR
"FAR APART, THIS MAY BE DIFFICULT. F
"SO, PRESS TO ALTER THE EYE
"SEPERATION. Y DEFAULT, THIS IS 45,
"WHICH IS EASIEST FOR MOST PEOPLE. F
"YOUR EYES ARE CLOSE TOGETHER, LOWER
"THIS. F THEY ARE FAR APART, INCRESE
"THIS. OW RELOAD YOUR ORIGINAL DESIGN
"IMAGE, AND CALCULATE THE
"AUTOSTEREOGRAM AGAIN.
"
" ?
"(HIS IS NOT NECESSARY TO USE THE
"AUTOSTEREOGRAM GENERATOR, AND IS ONLY
"INCLUDEDFOR IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.)
"
" MAGINE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING OUT
"OF THE WINDOW AT A BIRD. OTH YOUR
"EYES ARE FOCUSSED UPON THE BIRD, BUT
"YOUR EYES ARE LOOKING IN SLIGHTLY
"DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, BECAUSE THE
"BIRD IS AT A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT ANGLE
"RELATIVE TO EACH EYE. HEREFORE IF
"YOU WERE TO PLOT ONTO THE WINDOW
"WHERE YOUR LINES OF VISION FROM EACH
"EYE CUT THE GLASS, THEY WOULD BE IN
"SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT POSITIONS, AS
"SHOWN BELOW.
"
"
" ..

"
" F YOU FOCUS ON SOMETHING
"FURTHER AWAY, YOU CAN PROBABLY SEE
"THAT THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE LINES
"OF VISION ON THE WINDOW INCREASES.
"UTOSTEREOGRAMS WORK ON THIS
"PRINCIPAL. LTHOUGH YOUR EYES ARE
"FOCUSSED ON DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE
"PAGE, YOUR BRAIN THINKS THAT BECAUSE
"THE PATTERN SEEN BY BOTH EYES IS THE
"SAME, BOTH EYES ARE FOCUSSED ON THE
"SAME POINT. ECAUSE YOUR EYES ARE NOT
"FOCUSSED ON THE PAGE, YOUR BRAIN
"ASSUMES THAT THIS POINT IS BEHIND THE
"PAGE. HIS IS SHOWN BELOW, WHERE THE
"REPEATING DOT PATTERN HAS BEEN
"REPLACED WITH A REPEATING LETTER
"PATTERN:
"
" _MAGE BEHIND PAGE
" . .
" . . _ INE OF VISION

" _ YES
"
" HE DISTANCE BEHIND THE PAGE
"THAT THE IMAGE APPEARS CAN BE ALTERED
"BY ALTERING THE HORIZONTAL DISTANCE
"BETWEEN THE REPEATS IN THE PATTERN.
"HEREFORE, BY HAVING DIFFERENT
"DISTANCES BETWEEN REPEATS IN
"DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE PAGE, A 3
"SURFACE CAN BE BUILT UP.
