This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Program CharDef, version 1.00 ============================= What is CharDef? ---------------- CharDef is a program to (re)define the systemfont or to install a systemfont from disc. How do you use the program? --------------------------- CharDef is a multitasking RISC OS-application and is written according to the Acorn guidelines (that is: I hope it is). Doubleclick on the CharDef- icon to install the program on the iconbar as a task. Click on the CharDef-icon on the iconbar to get the main CharDef-window. Click on a character in this window to get an edit-window. Click on a character-pixel to make it black or white. With the menu-option Alter you can rotate or shift your character. Store lets you temporarily store a character-definition. Install installs the changed character as a systemfont-character. When you want to save your changed characterset you can choose the menu-option Save. Enter a sensible filename and drag the file-icon to the desired directory. A font can be loaded by dragging a systemfont file-icon to the CharDef-icon on the iconbar or the main window of the program. A systemfont must have filetype BBCfont (&FF7). This will be the case when you haved saved your characterset with this program. Loading a systemfont into the program is equivalent to installing a systemfont by doubleclicking on a systemfont-file. So you can also load a font by doubleclicking on a font-file. Why do you need a systemfont editor? ------------------------------------ The systemfont is the most easy to use character-font of the Archimedes-computer. It is fast and always very readable. But it has one shortcoming: there is by definition only ONE systemfont. This program changes that. Now you can alter the pound character into a Dutch guilder character if you really want that (just an example!). A useful application is to define a mathematical characterset which can be used with First Word Plus. If you download the same characters to your printer you can edit and print a mathematical paper! In the next version of CharDef you can edit dot matrix download characters and install them on your printer.
