This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Magpie

Magpie is a hyper-media presentation creator. Hyper-media is the term given
to software which presents information of different forms such as text,
drawings, bit-mapped images (sprites), music and sounds in a structured way.
The presentation is structured like a binder containing various sections
which can hold many pages. The pages are Risc OS windows which can be
resized and moved around the desktop. On the pages are boxes containing
information and buttons which perform functions. Clicking on the buttons can
move you to another page or perform an action such as playing some music or
showing a hidden graphic. The best way to get to know what Magpie is all
about is to run the demonstration on this disk.
To run the Magpie binder browser application simply select the 'Run
!MagpiRead' item from the disk menu. When it has installed itself on the
icon bar you can then select the 'Example binders' item to open a window
showing two Magpie binders. They are 'Guide', a section of the user guide
and 'SoftSale', an example binder. 'Guide' will make it clear how easy
Magpie is to use and also how extremely powerful the program is. 'SoftSale'
was put together in under one hour and demonstrates how useful Magpie will
be to schools, colleges and home users the world over. To load a binder into
the browser simply double click on the binder's icon or drag it onto the
icon bar over the browser icon.
Painted Fonts
One important point to note is that the text in the 'Guide' binder will
appear as the system font. This produces some rather messy displays as it is
supposed to appear as the Trinity painted font. There is not enough room on
the cover disk to supply the painted fonts. If you want to see the Magpie
demos in their full glory then do the following:-
Prepare a blank disk and copy to it these files:-
!System, !MagpiRead and Guide from the cover disk
!Fonts from your applications disk
Reset the computer and insert the disk which contains the above files. Set
the Font cache to 96K using the Task Manager. Now double click on 'Guide'
