Nicola, I thought you would probably be very interested to hear my reactions to some of the points that you and the CICCU speakers/leaflets have raised - I have now read through all of these. I have a feeling this might be quite long, so read through when you've got a bit of time... - Evidence for the Resurrection The approach used throughout the booklet is to consider the alternative explanations to resurrection and to demonstrate that they are very unlikely. Firstly, on the issue of the empty tomb, the alternative arguments generally fall down either on a lack of motive to remove the body or the strong motivation there would have been afterwards to reveal the secret. So, by logical reason, we show that these ideas are unlikely. But what if we now consider the suggestion of resurrection by logical reason? We can't - resurrection is a miracle, and therefore cannot be explained by logical reason. If we try to, we find that resurrection is not just unlikely, it is impossible. So while we can use logical reason to show that we don't really know what happened, we certainly can't use it to find evidence for the resurrection. We essentially return to the original problem of faith - if you have faith in Christ, then resurrection seems a perfectly natural idea; if you don't have faith then the argument simply argues that we don't understand what happened. We also make the very large assumption that we know all of the characters involved in enough detail to completely understand their motives. We can be sure that there must be a lot that we don't know - facts that have become lost in history along the way. Take, for example, the argument that the government could not have removed the body because if they had they would surely have revealed this fact and the body later to crush the Christian movement. But there are very many possible reasons why this may not have been possible. While we may think we can understand the government's every motive, there may have been some other reason why they could not or would not reveal the fact that they removed the body. Perhaps the particular individuals involved were not in a position to confess what they had done. Perhaps the body had been destroyed and could not be produced as evidence. Whatever the reason may have been, it must have become lost in history if we assume this argument true. Could the removal have been by somebody of whom we have no record and whose motives we will never know? This suggestion may seem unlikely, but the alternative of resorting to the supernatural is, if we stick with logical reason, even less likely. It is interesting to compare the resurrection to a modern court case. Take, for example, the OJ Simpson case (I pick this not because it has any similarity to the resurrection, but simply because it is a case that I know something about). In this case there was substantial forrensic evidence to imply Simpson's guilt. But why didn't the glove used by the murderer fit his hand? We have very convincing evidence to argue both ways, and we must once again resort to producing unlikely but possible explanations for how the glove may have shrunk, or how the forrensic evidence may have been mistaken. Here, I think you must agree, one of these unlikely stories must in fact be the truth. And this case is by no means unique. It is probably a fair majority of cases where both sides are able to produce convincing evidence, and we are left to find an unlikely story that explains it all. The problem is usually down to lack of information - the evidence appears confusing because we don't fully understand the motives of everybody involved. The idea of resorting to a supernatural explanation probably wasn't that difficult for someone 2000 years ago to accept. They were surrounded by storms, thunder, volcanos, etc. that were well beyond their understanding of science and therefore had to be explained in terms of divine acts. When a resurrection was reported, we suspect they would not have been too bothered about adding a new act of God to the list rather than examining the evidence in more detail. The sightings of the risen Jesus could, I am sure, have been staged sufficiently realistically to convince people at that time into believing. If this was the case then why didn't the secret slip out? Well this is a mystery, and one that I very much doubt anyone will find a satisfactory explanation for. But do we need an explanation? As I have already pointed out, we are surrounded by mysteries (e.g. the OJ Simpson glove), and the fact that they don't have an explanation doesn't make them infeasible at all. It is interesting to compare the gospels to other texts dating from the same period. Take, for example, Pliny's explanation of the erruption of Versuvious (haven't got a clue how to spell it...), Tacitus' annals, or Virgil's account of the downfall of Troy: In Pliny's account of the volcanic erruption, it is obvious that he has no idea how and why what he is describing should have happened. This is very primative evidence written more or less at the time of the event, and we can assume Pliny's account to be unbiased since it was written to a friend, not intended to be preserved. The falsification of details of the event come where Pliny attempts to add his own false interpretation through not understanding the science. If we believe Tacitus' account of the Roman visit to Britain, we find that in Scotland water flows from the sea up into the mountains, as well as many other bizarre facts about it being close to the edge of the world. We are able to dismiss these observations and explanations as rediculous because we can reexamine the volcanic erruptions and the climate of Britain and spot the mistakes made by the Romans with their inferior understanding of the Earth. The only difference with the resurrection story in the Bible is that we cannot go back to reobserve. It is probably a fair assumption to make that unless the gospels were written by divine inspiration they contain similar mistakes. And the only evidence to suggest the divine inspiration of the gospels comes from the Christian church itself which is based on the teaching of these scripts. Well - that's my view of the "Evidence for the Resurrection" leaflet. I've actually got quite a lot more to say about the suggestions of the speaker yesterday and the other leaflets, but not really the time just now.
