This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

PLEASE NOTE: !DBFind supports Acorn's interactive !Help Application.
!DBFind can only be used with !DiscBox, and the files created
with that application.
Tired of searching through loads of discs, one by one, looking for a file?
Tired of looking for discs with enough space on them to store a new program?
Need help to organise your discs more?
Then !DBFind could be the help you've been waiting for! (WOW!)
!DBFind is designed to be used along with my other application called
!DiscBox.
I would advise that if you are not yet familiar with !DiscBox, then get
used to it before using !DBFind. I would also advise that all your DiscBox
files are kept in the same directory, (e.g. DBFiles which is in the !DiscBox
application directory) this can then be used as the 'Search Directory' which
will be described in more detail later.
* Loading !DBFind ----------------------------------------------------------
Load !DBFind in the usual way by double-clicking on its icon in the desktop
directory viewer. Once loaded, the !DBFind icon will appear on the right
hand side of the icon bar.
* The Icon Bar Menu --------------------------------------------------------
Info...........Displays information on !DBFind application.
File Search....Opens 'Seach DiscBox files' window.
Free Space.....Opens 'Search for free space' window.
Quit...........Quits !DBFind application.
* The 'Search DiscBox files' window ----------------------------------------
Search string:
This is where you enter the string that you want to search for.
This could be a filename, or part of one; a filetype or a
file size. It all depends on the search field described below.
To enter the string, click SELECT on the white box and the caret
will appear prompting you to enter the text.
Search field:
There are 3 search fields for you to choose from, these are:
1) Name - example search string: Font
this will search for any record that has 'Font' as part
of its filename, or if case sensitivity is switched off
then 'FONT' and other case variations will also be
searched for.
2) FileType -
example search strings: Application, ARCHIVE, sprite
this will search for files with a particular filetype.
Note that, as above, case sensitivity is taken into
consideration.
3) Size - example search string: >100
this will search for any files 'greater than 100Kb' in
size.
'<550' will search for files 'less than 550Kb' in size.
Correct syntax: <'<' or '>'><file size in Kb>.
Case Sensitive:
Clicking SELECT on this icon toggles the case sensitivity on and
off.
Search Directory:
Drag the directory icon of the directory which contains all the
DiscBox file to be searched, to this icon. It does not matter if
the directory contains sub-directories. Although only DiscBox
files should be contained in these directories otherwise funny
things will happen and !DBFind will probably crash!
Alternatively, drag one of the DiscBox file icons to this icon
and the files' parent directory will be taken as the search
directory.
NOTE that the 'Search' icon will only become selectable once a
search directory has been declared.
Search:
When all the above have been completed, click SELECT on the
'Search' icon to commence searching through the DiscBox files.
The 'Main Search Window' will then be opened....
* The Main Search Window ---------------------------------------------------
This window will be opened when a file search is being executed. The big
white icon at the top left side of the window shows the current status.
E.g. what DiscBox file is being searched. The windows title bar shows what
is being searched for, and the Hourglass pointer will show what percentage
of the search is completed.
When the search is completed, the status icon will show how many DiscBox
files were searched, as well as the total number of records, and the time
that the search took. It will also show the total number of records that
were found to conform to the search string, and the current record being
shown.
Clicking SELECT on either the 'Next' or 'Prev' icons shows either the next
or previous record found, respectively.
Clicking MENU over this window opens a menu giving further options:
Save as Text...Save the current record (or all of them) as text
file.
Print Report...Print the current record, or all of them.
Note that a suitable printer driver for your printer
must first be installed before this option can be
used.
All Records....Toggles between above actions acting on either the
current record shown, or all records found.
Note that this option has no use in the 'Main Search
for free space' window, which is covered later.
NOTE that if you wish to 'Save as Text' directly to another application such
as !Edit, you must ensure that either a !System, or a !Scrap application has
been seen by the Filer.
* The 'Search for free space' window ---------------------------------------
Space required:
Click SELECT on this icon to enter the amount of disc space which
you require, in Kbytes. e.g. enetering 100 will search for discs
with at least 100Kbytes of free disc space.
Search Directory:
See 'Search Directory' for 'Search DiscBox files' window, above.
Search:
Click SELECT on the 'Search' icon to commence searching.
This will open the main 'Search for free space' window...
* The main 'Search for free space' window ----------------------------------
This window will be opened when a search for free disc space is executed.
The icon at the top is the status icon, and shows the current DiscBox file
being searched, during the search.
The Hourglass pointer will also show what percentage of the search is
complete.
When the search is complete, the status icon will show how many discs were
found. Each discs name, reference and amount of free space will be listed in
the window below.
Clicking MENU over this window opens the menu described in 'The Main Search
Window' above.
* A helpful tip ------------------------------------------------------------
To shorten the time any search takes, copy the whole directory containing
all the DiscBox files (the Search Directory) to the RAM disc. This can
reduce the time a search takes by something like 40%.

ADDENDUM:
IF THE !DISCBOX APPLICATION HAS BEEN SEEN BY THE FILER, THEN THE
DBFILES DIRECTORY INSIDE ITS DIRECTORY WILL BE USED AS THE DEFAULT
SEARCH DIRECTORY IN !DBFIND.
For this reason, I would strongly recommend that you keep all your
DiscBox files in this Directory, and keep !DiscBox and !DBFind on
the same disc, to get the best from these applications.
ONE LAST MAJOR POINT: SO THAT !DBFIND CAN BE USED EFFECTIVELY, YOU
MUST USE !DISCBOX TO KEEP ALL YOUR DISCBOX FILES UP TO DATE. SO IF
YOU ADD ANOTHER FILE TO A DISC (OR DELETE A FILE FOR EXAMPLE),
UPDATE, OR RENEW THE CORRESPONDING DISCBOX FILE FOR THAT DISC.
