This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Pen Friend, the Design Concept predictive typer. Design Concept 1993 by Roger Spooner and Philip Whittaker -------------------------------------------------- Introduction PenFriend is a Predictive Typer for the Archimedes. It is intended to allow those with special writing needs to type on a computer more quickly and efficiently, using any normal word processor (or other software). It also offers Sticky Keys, allowing those who can press only one button at a time to use capital letters and special commands, and an on screen keyboard, for mouse and trackerball users. Whenever a letter is typed, PenFriend will display the most likely words which are going to be used, starting with that letter. Any of those words can then be selected with one key press, getting PenFriend to type the rest. If the desired word is not there, you can press another letter, and only words starting with those two letters will be included on the list. This process is repeated until you find the word you want. The words are chosen by their frequency of use in normal language. Thus the most common words will appear first on the list. As you type, the program learns new words and records the frequency with which all words are used. For those users who find it difficult to hold down Shift while typing, a sticky key system can be used to latch the Shift key. This means that one press (and release) of Shift turns it on, and then the next key pressed will be capitalised. This works not only for letters but for all the keys on the keyboard, and not only for Shift, but Control also. Some users find using a keyboard difficult, but still want to type. This problem is solved by opening a window on screen with pictures of each letter. If you click on a letter, PenFriend will type that in to the current program (for example a word processor). ------------------------------------------------- Working it. To load the program, double click on the icon. It will install on the icon bar and load its default lexicon. To open the prediction window, click on the icon. It intercepts all keypresses and displays possible alternative words in its window. As you type in to any other program (eg a word-processor) it will propose further words. If you press the appropriate function key, or click on the word you want with the mouse, the predictor will type the rest of that word in to the word-processor. If you get as far as typing a space then the program will learn your new word, offering it to you for use later. The list of suggested words is sorted according to the number of past uses of each one. Thus the most common 8 words to match the letters you have already typed are displayed. The program claims the function keys whenever a list of words is visible. This means that by simply pressing the function key, the word will be typed in to your current program. This does mean, though, that you can't use the normal function-key operations like saving. The predictor will release the function keys back to the normal application if there are no words visible, for example after pressing Space or Return. If you wish to keep the function keys for the current application, and will only use the mouse to select predicted words, you can disable function key claiming on the Options dialogue box of the menu available from the icon on the icon bar. The system also provides Sticky Keys. If you press and release Shift, then press a letter, the capitalised letter will appear. This works for all normal keys on the keyboard, and for most function keys etc. If you hold shift while pressing the key, as in normal typing, it will still work for normal (printing) keys. Ctrl is also sticky in the same way. Selecting 'Keyboard' from the menu on the icon bar will open a picture of the keyboard. Clicking on the keys will simulate pressing that key on the keyboard, including cursor and function keys! The Shift and Control keys in the window require the Sticky Keys system to be enabled, because you cannot click on two icons at once, and it uses the standard Sticky Keys system to remember the state. With it on, those keys will become highlighted when you click on them, and the next keypress will be shifted (or 'control'led), just like with real sticky keys. You can intermingle use of the on-screen keyboard with that of the real one without ill effects. --------------------------------------------------------- Options There are a large number of Options for the system. These can seem daunting at first, but luckily you can ignore the ones you are not interested in, leaving them at the default setting. To see the Options dialogue boxes, click Menu on the PenFriend icon on the icon bar, and move to the right of Options. For greater ease of use, drag the title bar of the menu itself (saying PenFriend) up and to the left. This will make room for the sub- menus which will grow out to the right. The options are divided up in to several groups: Lexicon, for features which affect the words in the lexicon, Display, for those which affect the appearance of the prediction window on screen, Typing, for the options which affect the way your key presses are transferred to other programs, and Miscellaneous for those others that dont fit in to any other category. The dialogue boxes containing the options all work in the following way: moving over the arrow on the preceding menu will make the dialogue box open. Moving back to the left across the arrow, or in any way moving in to the preceding menu, will make the box vanish, forgetting any changes you have made. If you want the program to remember the settings you have just entered, as you normally do, you must click on the OK icon at the bottom of the dialogue box immediately after entering your changes. Doing this will make the dialogue box and the menu vanish. If you want them to remain, you should click on the OK with the right hand mouse button, Adjust. This acknowledges the new settings and leaves the menus visible. If you want the program to ignore what you have done, and revert to the values previously set, you can click on the Cancel Box, move back to the previous menu, or click on any other window or the background of the whole screen. Any of these options makes the dialogue box close, and because you did not click on OK, the changes will not be learnt. Lexicon Options The Lexicon options allow you to control what is added to the lexicon in use. The lexicon is saved at the end of the day with whatever changes have been entered. If the user is not good at spelling, it may not be wise to allow the addition of new words. If, on the other hand, the user knows what they want and the program doesnt, it is especially important to train the lexicon with that persons style of writing. Thus it may be advisable to let PenFriend learn all the actions for the first few months, and then perhaps to disable further learning so that the user can get on with writing without everything they ever said being offered again. The Shortest Word is a numerical setting which allows you to prevent the learning of very short words by the lexicon. They are not a great advantage because there is no great saving of key strokes, and they may not actually be words, but letter codes or numbers instead. To change this value, click in the number box to the right of the legend, and use the Delete and number keys to enter a new value (and then click on OK). Learn New Words will, if there is a blue star in the box on the left, make the lexicon learn new words that it did not previously contain. These are saved and remembered for future use, and will be learnt instantly with no inconvenience to the user. Thus a word that was not previously known, and that you enter for the first time, will be treated normally, except for a new marker which you cant see. You should normally have the next option, Adapt Frequencies, on if you want to Learn New Words. The words are of course learnt only by the currently loaded lexicon file. In the lexicon editor, !EditLex, you can examine all the newly learnt words (new since you last checked) with the option of accepting (clearing the new marker) or removing them from the lexicon. Adapt Frequencies is less potent than the above, and merely records the use of each word as it is typed, so as to adjust the priorities on the list. This means that your favourite words will tend to be offered sooner, and thus the lexicon is personalised to your grammar. If Adapt Frequencies is on but Learn New Words is not, then new words are ignored but existing ones have their records changed. To change the latter two options, click on their white boxes. A blue star indicates that the option is On, and an empty box indicates that it is Off. Display Options There are a number of items controlling the way the prediction window appears on screen, and what it contains. The Display dialogue box controls these settings. These options affect neither the result of your typing nor changes to the lexicon. There are three sizes for the prediction window. The default one is the Medium size. It features no-nonsense text and a title bar, reasonably spaced out, and with lines between the options. The Small window has no title bar (you can move it by dragging the function key labels on the right), has no lines between options, and has the options more tightly-packed. The Large window has the Homerton Bold font used in a large size, with big gaps between each option. Each of these windows does the same thing, so the tradeoff is between screen space, reading ability and mouse control (if applicable). The current prediction window size is shown in the appropriate box (Medium in the picture above). To choose a different size, click on the right- pointing arrow to the right of that box. A sub-menu will appear, from which you can pick the size of your choice as with a normal menu. The choice is not made permanent until you click on OK of course. The sub-menu is illustrated below. The Number of Words predicted can be chosen between three and eight. The most useful value is in the region of 6. With too many words on offer, the user may have to think for too long after pressing each key (reading the words) and with too few, the correct word is less likely to appear, so they have to press more keys. You are welcome to choose your own preferred number by clicking on the right pointing arrow and selecting your chosen number from the sub-menu that appears. If the prediction window is set to Follow Caret then it will move to be always slightly ahead of the caret (cursor) in your word processor window. This minimises the distance you have to squint to see the predictions, but means that the window moves along every time, giving a rather unpleasant (but unavoidable) jerk when you press each key. If you have this option off (no blue star) then the prediction window remains where you put it, and you can move it around by dragging the title bar. You can move the small prediction window by dragging the grey F1 legend. Suggest Only Once (also known as Un-maintained Prediction) will, if switched on, prevent any word from being offered twice on the list of suggestions, for any one typed word. Thus for users who can reliably read the whole list every time, being sure not to miss the word they want if it does appear, this system will lead them more quickly to the right word (it keeps suggesting new words). Unfortunately, some users cannot be sure of seeing all words on a list, so having the option off will make the program suggest the most probable words for the letters typed, regardless of whether they have already been offered. This option does not affect the words offered on the list between different words typed. That is, if you ignore the when you are looking for that, then for the next word the will be offered immediately. Prefer Recently Used Words will bring words which you have used recently nearer the top of the list of suggestions. This works on the last thousand or so words typed, and will remember usage between sessions (because you are unlikely to type thousands of words in one session). If you have the option off, the words are recommended based on their number of uses throughout all time. Windows at front is a trivial, yet useful, option. If it is switched on, the Keyboard and Predictor windows will always be at the front of your windows on screen. Thus they cannot be obscured by anything else. The keyboard window (if open) will be in front of the prediction window. Keyboard Window allows you to choose the shape of the keyboard window. The Qwerty one looks much like the actual computer keyboard, whereas the alphabetic one has a rectangular arrangement of keys, with the letters in alphabetical order, and all the important keys close together. These are illustrated below. Show Capital letters is an option to change the letters on the keyboard window to capital or small letters, as appropriate. If on, the keys will be redrawn as capital or small letters, whichever is relevant. If this is off, the keys will remain as before but the correct form of the letters will be inserted in the word processor appear when you press a key. Typing Options There are a number of things that the program can do to the keyboard operation of the computer, changing what appears in your word processor as you press keys. These include sticky keys for Shift and Control, prediction using function keys, and so on. Sticky Keys, if switched on, will hold down Shift or Control for you when you press them on their own. Thus if you press Shift, then release it, then press a letter, the letter will be capitalised when it appears in the word processor. This also works for Control, allowing you to perform some special commands such as centring, deleting blocks and saving (depending on the word processor). The system works for almost all the keys on the keyboard, including the cursor and function keys, and will also work where the Shift or Control key is still held down while you press the second key, as normal typists do. Thus it does not prevent migration on to normal keyboard use for those who wish it. When you press a normal key (letters, etc) the stuck keys will operate, and then unstick so the next letter will appear in lower case. If you press Shift or Control twice, without pressing any normal key in between, the effect will be cancelled. This can be seen best on the Keyboard window, described below, where the sticky keys are clearly shown. The computer can also bleep when a key is stuck, so you can be sure that you have pressed it correctly. Clever Punctuation helps users to finish sentences. With the word prediction system, a space is automatically inserted after the word. If you want it to be the last word of a sentence, you would have to delete the space, press full stop, enter a new space, and then press shift for the first capital letter of the new sentence. All this can be done with clever punctuation: if you press full stop (.), comma (,), exclamation mark (!), question mark (?), colon (:), semicolon (;) or closing brackets of any shape (},),]) then the clever punctuation system will be used, moving the space to after the punctuation, if switched on here. Shift is only pressed for the next sentence if StickyKeys is on and the punctuation was one of . ! ? In-line prediction offers the doubtful pleasures of having the most likely word completed for you when you press Space. This takes the top word on the list of choices and types it for you when you press Space after some letters. If you require one of the words lower down the list you must still press the function key, and if you require a word not on the list, you must keep typing. If you have typed your whole word, and were never offered it on the list, and now you know that pressing Space will complete a longer word which you dont want, you can press Control-Space (Hold down Control, or press it once with Sticky Keys on, then press Space) to insert an actual space. Trailing Space can be switched off to prevent the program from adding a space after each word completed automatically. This can help those users who can move perfectly well, and are using PenFriend for the spelling assistance. Delete as Undo and Backspace as Undo both have similar functions. If you press one of these keys when its corresponding entry here has a star, then the last thing you did will be undone. This means that if you have just pressed a function key for PenFriend to complete a word for you, then pressing Delete will remove all the letters which were done for you. Pressing Delete again will just delete letters one at a time, as normal. If you want to add a suffix to a word, you will need to remove the trailing space which is automatically added. Thus the Undo function is not perfect. You may decide whether to have it on both the Delete and BackSpace buttons, or neither, or just one, by selecting the corresponding arrangement in this dialogue box. If Use Function Keys is off, the program will not intercept the function key presses at all, instead leaving them all to the word processor. If you wish to accept a predicted word, you must click on it with the mouse (over the word itself, on the list). Thus this option is normally switched on. Miscellaneous Options There are finally a number of options which do not fit in to any of the above menus. These perform a variety of auxilliary functions of no great importance. Speech will switch on a speech module, if loaded, speaking each letter and then the whole word when completed, with the *SAY command. This means that it will work with most speech systems, and in particular those from Superior Software and the Fourth Dimension. PenFriend does not at present help you to load these programs, so installing them is left up to you. If none is installed when the program tries to speak, it remains mute. Sticky Keys Bleep will make the computer make a high-pitched noise whenever you press either Control or Shift. The tones can be learnt by the user, but in essence the higher ones are for keys sticking down. This will help to identify when a capital letter is imminent. If both Speech and Sticky Keys Bleep are turned on, the program will describe the sticky key state when you press Shift or Control. Save At End is a sort of emergency cancel for the program. The status of the entire system is saved to the lexicon on disc, where it came from, at the end of a session (when you quit the program). If this option is off, any changes which have occurred to the program will be ignored, including changed settings and updated lexicons. Also, if the computer is switched off without properly quitting PenFriend, the data will be lost. -------------------------------------------------- Comments on the software, bug reports, sample texts for lexicons, or old Bic pens should all be sent to: Roger Spooner Design Concept 30 South Oswald Road Edinburgh EH9 2HG Telephone 031 668 2000
