StarInfo/Waters/!Rubix/!Help/Docs/ReadMe
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

*------------------------------------------------------------------------* / !Rubix - by Robert Waters (version 1.10, 20th August 1995) / *------------------------------------------------------------------------* Had I written this ten years ago, when Rubik's Cube was still in its heyday, it would probably have attracted much more attention than it will now. But I didn't have the computer or the solution ten years ago, and besides I was only five years old. !Rubix, as you may have guessed, is intended to provide a solution for the Rubik's Cube. It is based on the book 'The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube' by James G. Nourse, published by Bantam Books; selected moves are taken from 'Cube Games' by Don Taylor and Leanne Rylands. Tested on RISC OS 2 and RISC OS 3.11. A brief history of the Rubik's Cube ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This fascinating puzzle was designed by Ern Rubik, an architect and teacher in Budapest, Hungary. It was apparently designed independently by Terutoshi Ishige, an engineer in Japan. Both applied for patents in the mid-1970s. Professor Rubik designed the cube as an aid to his students in recognizing spatial relationships in three dimensions. The cubes were first manufactured in Hungary and became available in Europe in 1978. It is only recently that they have achieved their substantial worldwide popularity (many millions sold!) They have been widely available in the United States only since 1980. It seems that these cubes were almost as common as ornaments during the 1980 holiday season. The Rubik's cube has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations; this program solves the cube every time by selecting up to 17 from just 181 different sequences! Several books now exist providing a solution for the cube, but *as far as I know* no program like this exists for any computer. But before you use it, the following problem, common to all cube-solving systems, must be pointed out: * If you don't use a cube, and input a random sequence of colours, massive odds are against you getting a solution. You are also unlikely to solve the cube if you have peeled off the stickers and rearranged them, or taken the cube apart. This is very silly, and few resulting arrangements will lead to a solution. However, if you have very sensibly not done this, and you type in the colours correctly, a solution will be found, no matter how much you have turned the faces, guaranteed to involve less than 150 face turns. If you input the colour sequence carefully, a few times, and cannot get a solution, you (or somebody else...) have probably taken the cube apart or rearranged the stickers. In this case, peel off all the stickers and replace them so that they are all the same colour on any one face. Now, after muddling the cube by turning faces only, !Rubix should provide a working solution. Use of !Rubix ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Load in the usual way, and click on the icon bar icon (a nice little cube). This will take you to a full-screen blank Rubik's Cube with the six colours alongside and instructions at the top. In short, just follow these. At any point before completing the colours, you can get back to the desktop by pressing Escape. Hold your cube as shown, with a corner pointing towards you and a face on the top. A square on the cube will be flashing black and white; this is the highlighted square. Click on one of the six coloured panels on the right corresponding to the colour of the sticker on your cube in the position corresponding to the highlighted square on the screen. Now that may sound awfully complicated, but is isn't - better phrased versions on a postcard please. Carry on as the highlighted square moves across each face. If you make a mistake, click on Remove Square to go back a square. After completing a face, you must click on OK to continue, or Remove Square to go back as before. After clicking OK you cannot go back without pressing Escape and restarting. When you have completed the visible portion, the cube will rotate slowly, in fact very slowly, since I can't do machine code. If you tend to fall asleep at this point, you can select Fast Rotation from the main menu, and the colours will disappear during rotation, speeding up the process. A new, blank face will come into view - rotate your cube correspondingly and continue. When you have entered the last colour, and clicked on OK a total of six times (once for each face) there will be a pause, and then you are returned to the Desktop. A window will have opened, containing a picture of the cube, and a strange sequence of letters and symbols alongside. Believe it or not, this is the solution! Clicking Adjust on the icon bar icon opens the Solution window. Keys : If you find using the mouse slow, press 1-6 to enter the colour ~~~~ sequence, Enter/Return to replace OK, and Delete to Remove Squares. Interpreting the solution ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the most difficult part of all. While reading this, you are advised to have in view the Draw file 'Cubes' from the same directory as this file. The solution consists of a string of letters each followed by a symbol (+ - or 2). Each letter-symbol pair represents a single turn of a face. The letter represents a face, as follows: L : left face \ These three faces are T : top face } labelled on the cube F : front face / in the solution window. R : right face B : bottom face P : posterior (back) face The three symbols represent: + : 90 degrees (one quarter turn) clockwise rotation. Faces are rotated clockwise as if the face in question is facing you. The six clockwise turns are illustrated in the draw file 'Cubes'. Take careful notice now, and whenever you use !Rubix, which way clockwise is for each face - this is not as simple as it sounds. I find turning the P face particularly confusing, as it cannot be seen and feels as if it should be the other way. Remember - one wrong turn will cause the entire sequence to fail, and you will have to start all over again. - : 90 degrees (one quarter turn) anticlockwise rotation. This is simply a turn in the opposite direction to that for a clockwise rotation. These are not illustrated, but are easy to work out from the clockwise rotations. 2 : 180 degrees (one half turn) rotation. Of course, it does not matter which way you turn the face for this turn, making this the easiest rotation. e.g. L+R-F+B2: turn left face 90 degrees clockwise turn right face 90 degrees anticlockwise turn front face 90 degrees clockwise turn bottom face 180 degrees. N.B. Don't confuse B (bottom) and P (posterior) - B is not the back! ~~~ The notation described above was designed by James G. Nourse, author of 'The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube'. You may be familiar with the alternative notation designed by David Singmaster, and used frequently in Scientific American magazine. If so, select Singmaster from the Notation submenu, which you can get from the icon bar or the window. It is perhaps more common, but in my opinion not as plain. Try it and see! As above, except: U = top (up) face D = bottom (down) face B = posterior (back) face superscript 2 = half turn superscript -1 = anticlockwise quarter turn A letter on its own (with no symbol) represents a clockwise quarter turn. Altering the palette ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The six colours on the faces of a Rubik's Cube are usually: red, green, yellow, blue, white and orange. These are the default values in !Rubix, but selecting Palette From File, allows the six colours to be defined by colours 1-6 in the !Palette file from the same directory as this file. Load !Palette, change colours 1-6 to match those on your cube, and resave it with the same name to use !Rubix with different colours. The book ~~~~~~~~ 'The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube' contains a complete, easy-to-memorise solution for any arrangement of the Rubik's Cube. It also contains more information on the cube, plus sections on speed cubing, hints, short-cuts, and various cube games including cube alphabet.
