This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

DarkHorse screensaver is Copyright KOOL 1993. It is classed as shareware,
which means that if you use it, you need register yourself as a user with
us.
Read the file 'Register' found in directory 'Docs' for registration and
it's benefits.
Only 'unregistered' versions on Dark Horse may be distributed, it should
not be charged for, apart for a minimal fee to pay for media / postage
and is copied completely with all files as supplied and unchanged
including this one. To check if Dark Horse is 'unregistered' look at the
'info' box from the DarkHorse icon bar menu. The field for 'Owner' should
be marked 'unregistered'.
No part of the application may be extracted for external use.

This 'Manual' is a guide to using Dark Horse. For details concerning
RISCOS, please refer to your computer manuals.
DarkHorse
~~~~~~~~~
DarkHorse is a fully multitasking programmable screensaver for the
Acorn Archimedes and compatible computers. When DarkHorse is blanking,
the operating system will continue to process other tasks.
Compatibility
-------------
DarkHorse has been designed, coded and tested on RISCOS 3. Although it
has not been tested on RISCOS 2, there shouldn't be any problems in
running it on such a machine. However running under RISCOS 2 will not
give the plinthed effect on the icons.
Note, under RISCOS 3, the internal screen blanker will be switched off
on loading DarkHorse.
DarkHorse operates correctly with all Archimedes screen modes,
including those user-defined ones. The resolution and number of colours
of the mode is automatically detected by DarkHorse.
If your machine has had installed any of the 24-bit colour cards, I
cannot indicate the performance of DarkHorse as I do not have 24-bit
colour myself. If you do own such a card, I would be interested to
know how the savers behave in some of the new screen modes.
Dark Horse savers have not been tested on a multi-sync monitor, perhaps
someone with such a monitor could inform me of any savers which behave
differently in higher screen modes. There shouldn't be any.
FloppyDisk
----------
DarkHorse operates by holding one saver in memory at a time. This means
that when the user wishes to select a new saver, the disk will need to
be accessed. If you are running DarkHorse from a floppy drive, and
decide to change saver, you will have to ensure that the drive contains
the disk from which you loaded DarkHorse. If you don't, DarkHorse will
pop up a message box requesting you to insert that disk.
Loading
-------
Load it as any other RISCOS application by double clicking on the
!DarkHorse application. DarkHorse will install itself on the left hand
side of the icon bar.
Error when Loading
------------------
You can only have one copy of DarkHorse loaded at any one time. So if
DarkHorse is already loaded, and you attempt to install another copy
of it, a message box will appear telling you that you cannot do that.
This version of DarkHorse provides the facility to hide (remove) the
DarkHorse bar icon, but keep DarkHorse installed. This however does
mean that it is not obvious if DarkHorse is present or not. To check,
look for DarkHorse in the 'Task Display'.
If it is not there, you should be able to install it again.
If the message box appears even though DarkHorse isn't already present,
try typing from the command line :
*unset dload$dir
This unset's the variable that indicates whether DarkHorse is present
or not. If DarkHorse still refuses to load, (it shouldn't do) - please
contact me at the addresses given above.
Icon Bar Menu
-------------
Clicking MENU (middle mouse button) on the iconbar icon will present
the following menu options :
'Info' - standard info window, giving program details.
'Quit' - removes DarkHorse.
Settings Windows
----------------
Clicking SELECT (left mouse button) on the iconbar icon will pop up the
settings window.
The left handside of the window is split into three sections :
'Saver' - This is the name of the current saver in memory.
To change to another, click on the '=>' box to the
side of the name of the current saver. This pops up a
list of savers available, from which one can be chosen.
At the top of the list is an option for 'random'. This
will choose a new saver everytime blanking is required.
'Argument' - DarkHorse allows the user to control what a saver does
by supplying input to the 'Argument' icon.
On loading a saver the default argument to the saver
is put into the argument input box. The user can click
inside the argument box and type in a new entry which
complies with argument help (see below).
An incorrect or blank argument will be replaced by the
default value on entry into the saver.
'Argument Help' - The argument help gives indication of the input format
for the current saver.
The right hand side of the window has the following sections :
'Time' - This is the 'time to blank' and can be set from the
'Time' controls or keyed into the input icon. Time is
in seconds between 10 & 999.
'Active' - Allows the saver to be awake or disabled. ie whether
it should bother to screenblank. On loading DarkHorse,
'Active' is set on.
'Password' - Indicates whether a password is required on return to
desktop from saver. See below for more ....
'Demo' - Forces the saver to blank.
(requires 'Active' option to be set)
'Save' - Saves the current saver as the default. It does not
save any user argument data, so all default values
are preserved. It also saves the 'Active', 'Password'
and 'random' settings.
Password
--------
The purpose of the password option is to stop people tampering with your
machine when you have to leave it unattended for any period of time ...
The default password is 'DARKHORSE' spelt in capitals. If you have the
setting for 'Password' on, you will hear a beep when you try and return
to the desktop from a saver. This indicates that you now need to type in
a password to be able to return to the desktop. Type in the password and
press RETURN. If you typed in correctly, the desktop will re-appear, if
you got it wrong, the saver will continue to do it's thing. You can have
as many goes as you like at guessing the password.
WARNING : Please use this option with care. Don't forget the password as
there is no way returning to the desktop without it if the
password option is set. There is no 'skeleton' password, ie I
haven't coded any special password to let me in ... I cannot
be held responsible for any loss of data.
Changing the Password
---------------------
To change the password, click MENU (middle mouse button) on the Password
toggle icon. This will pop up the Password window, which will request
you to type in the current password. As you type, you will see the boxes
representing the character cells fill up, you can use the 'delete' key
if you make a mistake. Press return once you have keyed in the current
password. DarkHorse will inform you if typed it in wrong. Next, you will
be asked to type in the new password. After this, you will be asked to
verify the new password by typing it in again. This ensures no careless
mistakes are made. DarkHorse will inform you once the new password has
been correctly set. You may abort this procedure at any time by pressing
ESCAPE.
This all may have sounded a little confusing, but it will all make sense
when you try it.
Keyboard Options
----------------
The following keyboard options are now implemented :
CTRL-SHIFT-D-O : Pops up the Main Settings window.
CTRL-SHIFT-D-L : Pops up the Savers List.
CTRL-SHIFT-D-<cursor key down> : Hides DarkHorse Icon from Iconbar. *
CTRL-SHIFT-D-<cursor key up> : Re-Installs DarkHorse Icon to Iconbar.
* this does not quit DarkHorse.
Sleep / No Sleep Corners
------------------------
The top left hand corner of the screen is the Sleep Corner. It will
cause the screen to blank if the pointer is there for longer than half
a second. (requires 'Active' option to be set)
The top right hand corner of the screen is the No Sleep Corner. The
saver will be disabled as long the pointer remains there.
The Savers
----------
The DarkHorse savers are separate files which are held in the 'Horses'
directory within !DarkHorse. You will notice that the files in this
directory all appear in the savers list. On loading DarkHorse, this
directory is scanned to find which savers are available. If you remove
any of these files, they will not appear in the savers list.
Adding a Saver. If you acquire a new saver and wish to add to DarkHorse,
simply copy the saver into the 'Horses' directory. Now next time you
load !DarkHorse, this saver will appear in the list also. Obviously if
you already had DarkHorse loaded when you copied the saver, you will
have to 'quit' and reload for the new saver to appear in the savers
list. Note, an unregistered version of DarkHorse only allows a limited
use of new savers. For full usage, read the text 'Register' for how to
obtain your registered version of DarkHorse.
For a little more explanation of the savers themselves, read the
'savers' file for the complete list.

That's about all you need to know to use the program. If you would like
to write your own savers, read the 'FileFormat' document.

enhance the program as described in the 'Future' document.
