!Sibelius7/!Help/Specialsco

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

MUSIC EXAMPLES

If you want to embed short fragments of music
in text, such as in a music textbook, you
should export them from Sibelius into a docu-
ment processor (such as Impression). This is
explained in Save graphic. You will often need to set up various options beforehand:

Page numbers: music examples seldom have
page numbers, so switch them off if they are
    on.
Name format: if the music example is for no
instrument in particular, choose House style
    InstrumentsNo names.
Narrow staves: short music examples can be
much narrower than the page they appear on.
Dont try to do this by decreasing the page
width in the Dimensions window - Sibelius
wont allow this if the page gets very
narrow. Instead, set a large right margin,
so there is lots of white space to the right
    of the staves.
Excerpts: if you are using an excerpt from
the middle of a score which includes bar
numbers and/or rehearsal marks, set up the
first bar number and rehearsal mark of the
excerpt within the relevant House style
    menus.

The StyleSheet directory on disk 2 includes a
MusicExamp style sheet with these options
  preset.

PIANO FOUR HANDS

Scores for four hands at one piano used to be
printed with the music for the left-hand pian-
ist on each left-hand page, and the right-hand
pianists music on the right-hand page. The
left-hand and right-hand pages must end at the
same point so page-turning will work; some-
times the system breaks correspond to make
  rehearsal easier.

You can use the old-fashioned notation in
either of the two following ways:

Create two scores, one for each pianist.
Make the page breaks (and system breaks, if
you like) correspond by inserting breaks at
the appropriate points. Print out both
scores and interleave the pages. If page
numbers are switched on, the pages will be
numbered 1,1,2,2,3,3... (which may be what
you want). Bar numbers and rehearsal marks
will be correct for each pianist.
Alternatively, create a single score in
which you alternate pages of music for each
pianist, with page-breaks in between. The
pages will be numbered 1,2,3,4... as normal.
You mustnt use automatic bar numbers or
rehearsal marks with this method, as they
wont correspond between the two piano
    parts.

Whichever method you use, be careful not to
alter the spacing of the score too much after
transcribing it or the layout will be spoilt.

VERY LONG SCORES

Scores which are too long to fit onto your
computer or onto a single floppy disk can be
transcribed in several sections, each saved as
a separate file. The first bar number, first
page number and first rehearsal mark can be
adjusted so that the bars, pages and rehearsal
marks of each section follow on from the
  previous one.

CHORAL MUSIC

When singers divide, you can number them 1 and
  2 using the Players text style (see Players);
the names to the left of each system will
automatically be numbered the same way.

Alternatively, you can write Dec., Can. and
Full in one of the Technique text styles; this
wont be duplicated to the left of the system.
You should put system breaks wherever a choral
stave splits from one stave to two or joins
back from two to one stave; see System and
  page breaks for an explanation.

In some choral music, the names only appear to
the left of the system at the start, but they
are written above some later staves where
necessary to show who is singing what. See
manual for details on this and scores for
  double choir.
