!Newsbase/Support/newsbase/welcome/new_mail
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

By now you must have at least partially set up your Newsbase configuration. This message will further explain some of the options you can choose, and what they mean. But first, a few words on what Newsbase actually does. The intent is to provide a central service for the handling of internet mail and usenet news, in a way that doesn't depend on either the application you use to actually read and reply to your news and mail, or on the details of the network which bring them to you. Newsbase sits somewhere between the offline newsreaders widely used in the PC world, and traditional unix-style news server software. The network transports currently supported are the freeware dialup TCP/IP package KA9Q (also known as !TCPIP), and Taylor uucp. Work is also under way on an interface to Acorn TCP/IP, but it should be possible to cater for many other types of transport (for example, downloaded PC-style SOUP files, as generated by the unix utility "uqwk"). Newsbase provides the following features: * Multiple users per site. * Fully automatic interaction with transports (ka9q, uucp), including detection of configuration, reception and sending of files, alteration of configuration (where appropriate for the transport). * Automatic database management with indexing for fast article lookup. * Fully configurable message/article expiry, set individually for each group. * Handling of article cancellations and "Supersedes" headers. * Interactive addition of new groups. * Correct, automatic handling of postings to moderated newsgroups. * Optional news posting via mail gateway. * Automatic filing of outgoing messages for later reference. * Local (site-only) newsgroups. * Article/message filters - message junk, kill, redirection, feed to external program. * Mail forwarding. * Mail vacation handling. * Confirmation of mail delivery (Return-Receipt handling). Hopefully, you found installation and first-time setup of Newsbase an easy and painless experience. Some of the many configuration options can be confusing at first, but in most cases Newsbase will attempt to set sensible defaults. If you have any difficulty, please read the !Help file first. Further information on several subjects is present in the "docs" directory within !Newsbase - you can access this by double-clicking on the !Newsbase application while holding down the SHIFT key. Please do not alter or delete any of the files within !Newsbase unless you are sure you know what you're doing! A few configuration options are worth spending a couple more words on. * Automatic expiry (Newsgroups control panel) This has an option to expire mail as well as news. It is highly recommended that you leave this set to expire news only, and delete your unwanted mail messages manually. People rarely want to have their email deleted automatically as it ages! * Retain batches (General control panel) This option keeps batch files for several days before deleting them. It is meant to provide insurance in case of errors; however these seem to be rare events, so if you can't afford the disk space to keep these used batches around, feel free to disable this option. * Default reader (General control panel) You can drag your favourite newsreader here (from a filer window) to make it the default - if Newsbase is set to announce new arrivals, this reader will be started automatically when you click on the "Read" button. To: postmaster From: newsbase@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu (Graham Allan) Subject: Using Newsbase with !TCPIP Reply-To: gta@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu Date: Thu, 04 Nov 1994 17:12:53 -0600 Message-ID: <19941104.171253.37@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu> Organization: Utility Spam Research Kitchen This message describes some of the key features of Newsbase when used with ka9q/!TCPIP. Newsbase handles reception of newly-arrived news and mail files automatically, debatching them as soon as they become available. If you want to prevent this, you can disable "Automatic debatch" in the General control panel, but in most cases, debatching seems to have little impact on the speed of ftp transfers, etc, occurring at the same time. If you have more than one news server defined, Newsbase will treat one as the "primary" server for the addition of new groups. It should not, in general, be necessary to manually edit the xxxGroup files (eg, DemGroup), as Newsbase can add and remove groups automatically. However, if you *do* edit these files yourself, please do it while newsbase is not running, otherwise an inconsistent state can result. This will not have any particularly disastrous results, but it is better avoided. Newsbase will notice the updated files when it next starts up and reread their contents. Newsbase makes manual "trimming" of the !TCPIP news history files (usually found in <NNTP$Dir>.xxxHist) unnecessary. These files normally have to be kept to a reasonable length to prevent excessive memory use by !TCPIP (and crashes, in earlier versions). Newsbase trims these files automatically after each debatch, keeping by default the last 3 days worth of history information. This can be altered by editing the "postfetch" transport file. If you are using !TCPIP 2.02 or later, this function is no longer required (the history files are managed directly by !TCPIP), but no changes are required for Newsbase to cater for this. Outgoing mail to multiple recipients is queued so as to avoid sending it to each person individually, where possible. Newsbase does this by using the "Remote host" entry in the Site Control Panel. This should normally contain your "smtp gateway" host name - newsbase will forward the message to this host for distribution to all the recipients. Newsbase will normally post news articles using the direct NNTP posting feature of !TCPIP. If you would rather send them by email, using a mail-to-news gateway, set this option in the General Control panel, along with your preferred gateway. Newsbase will then automatically convert news postings into mail messages to this address. Newly created newsgroups (those normally listed in the !TCPIP "xxxNG" files) are handled in two ways. Firstly, newsbase will create "fake" news articles in the group "newsbase.control", for easy viewing in your newsreader. Secondly, the groupnames are stored by Newsbase for a configurable length of time. You can step through this list using the "New Groups" option from the Groups Control Panel, adding them to your newsfeed individually. To: postmaster From: newsbase@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu (Graham Allan) Subject: Updates to Newsbase 0.53 Reply-To: gta@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu Date: Fri, 17 Feb 1995 17:12:53 -0600 Message-ID: <19950217.171253.38@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu> Organization: Utility Spam Research Kitchen Welcome to Newsbase 0.53. This message briefly describes some of the changes since 0.51 and 0.52, the last generally-available versions. * Filters These are now much improved over the ones in 0.51. Up to 3 conditions may be combined to trigger any one filter, based on the contents of the To, From, Subject or Newsgroups headers. The "To" condition now also checks the contents of "Cc:" and "X-Originally-To:" headers, if present. Multiple conditions may be linked by AND or OR. Condition strings may now contain "*" wildcards. The "Redirect" filter can now redirect articles to groups in addition to the original destinations, as well as replacing the originals. * Cosmetics Templates and other parts of the user interface have been changed to be more closely compliant with the Style Guide. * Outgoing news and mail Newsbase will now internally queue news and mail if insufficient memory is available to run the appropriate transport program. They will be sent to the transport later when resources permit. * News posting The option of sending news by email via a mail2news gateway has been added. Newsbase now supports "local" newsgroups on the individual machine, under the "newsbase.*" hierarchy. Articles posted to these groups are not sent out via the network transport, but simply filed locally. Crossposting between "newsbase.*" and real usenet groups is prevented. * New groups Newsbase can now process the "new groups" information returned by some transports (eg ka9q). It is now possible to step through the list of new groups and add them to your newsfeed individually. * New options Return-Receipt mail processing can now be disabled. Creation of spurious newsgroups of the type "alt.swedish.chef.bork.bork.bork" can be selectively disabled. Expiry time menus now have a writable entry to accept any value. The minimum disk space threshold before Newsbase suspends operstions is now configurable. * News directory update The !NewsDir application is now automatically updated with new !Boot, !Run files, etc, if required. * RISC OS 3.5 Newsbase now supports RISC OS 3.5 explicitly, using dynamic areas for various memory buffers. Several bugs in dynamic area handling from Newsbase 0.52 are now fixed. * Article compression Articles can now be compressed to save disc space. Articles are compressed during group expiry, and decompressed when requested by a client (eg, TTFN). For additional compression support, copy Acorn's "squash" program (from !Squash, supplied with RISC OS) into !Newsbase.support.newsbase, where Newsbase will use it as a fallback should its own routines fail. * Expiry scheduling You can now specify a time of day for expiry to take place, rather than it occurring automatically after a debatch. * Log file Newsbase now keeps fairly detailed information in its log file, including details of new mail received, mail or news sent, batch files processed, groups created or deleted, and any errors which occur. * Errors If Newsbase crashes or displays other errors, please report them to me at allan@mnhep1.hep.umn.edu, including as much detail as possible. Useful information includes: - the version number of Newsbase - type of computer (Risc PC or Archimedes) & memory size - what Newsbase was doing at the time of the error, with related information: - batch type and size, if the error was during debatch - transport type if the error was in sending mail or news - any special circumstances (low disc space, low memory, etc). Newsbase does now keep a fairly detailed logfile: please examine this before reporting errors as it may contain useful information.
