bio4

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

BIOLOGY 4
1 TYPES OF FOOD
Main types of nutrient:

CARBOHYDRATE

PROTEIN

FAT

VITAMINS

Animals require a balance of these in

their diets plus water, mineral salts

and, in some cases, fibre.
#
2 CARBOHYDRATES
POLYSACCHARIDES are large chain

molecules. They may be structural

(e.g. cellulose) or act as storage

(e.g. starch, glycogen). INSOLUBLE.

DISACCHARIDES (e.g. maltose, sucrose)

and MONOSACCHARIDES (e.g. glucose,

fructose) are the SOLUBLE sugars.

All carbohydrates contain carbon,

oxygen, hydrogen only: atoms in ratio

CHO. Cereals and vegetables are good

sources.
#
3 PROTEINS
PROTEINS are large chain molecules

made up of a number of amino-acids

joined by peptide bonds. Proteins are

major components of cell structure and

the basis of all enzymes. All contain

C, H, O and N. There are about 20

amino-acids, some essential in diet.

Their sequence is critical for the

function of any protein. Important

proteins include insulin and

haemoglobin. Meat, eggs and fish are

good dietary sources of protein.
#
4 FATS
FATS are large molecules each made of

glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains. They

are mostly carbon and hydrogen with

some oxygen.

Fats release more energy than any

other food.

Good sources are
dairy products.

Glycerol
molecules are
water-seeking
while fatty acid
chains repel
water.

6 VITAMINS
Required in small amounts, often for

the efficient working of enzymes. They

are not alike chemically, so there is

no one test for them. Absence from the

diet impairs health & may result in

disease.

SOURCES AND DEFICIENCY DISEASES

VITAMIN A: butter, eggs, vegetables.
           Infection, night blindness.

VITAMIN B: bread, yeast, liver.
           Beri-beri, pellagra.

VITAMIN C: fruit, fresh vegetables.
           Tissue damage scurvy.

VITAMIN D: butter, eggs.
           Bone weakness rickets.

8 FEEDING METHODS
Finding enough of the right kind of

food is vital to all animals.

Different types of food need different

methods:

HERBIVORES - cellulose, large amounts.

CARNIVORES - locate and capture prey.

OMNIVORES - incompletely specialised.

FILTER-FEEDERS - sieves.

SAPROZOITES - digest externally.

PARASITES - (see Biology 2,

             section 7,8,9.)
#
9 HERBIVORES
EXAMPLES: Locust, Sheep.

Plant material needs much chewing and

grinding.

Mammals, often without canines, have

ridged molars and circular jaw motion.

Intestinal bacteria

digest cellulose.
p
1
#
10 CARNIVORES
EXAMPLES: Spider, Dog.

Need mechanism to catch or trap prey

and to kill.

Mammals: large, sharp canines, scissor

-like first molars (carnassial). Jaw

motion up and down only, with strong

muscles.

CANINES 1 1

PRE-MOLARS 4 4

MOLARS 2 3
#
11 OMNIVORES
EXAMPLES: Human, Pig, Cockroach.

Some features of both carnivore and

herbivore. Advantage in ability to eat

variety of food compensates for lack

of specialisation.

#
12 FILTER-FEEDERS
EXAMPLES:

Baleen Whale.

Traps krill on sieve of whale-bone.

Oysters, etc. and many Fish, use their

gills as a filter.

Another example is the Barnacle.
#
13 SAPROZOITES
Saprozoites are animals which feed on

dead and decaying material (like

saprophytic plants).

They pour digestive enzymes on to the

food, and then reabsorb the products.

Examples include many soil animals and

the housefly.
