This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

SpacePaint is a user-friendly painting programme. It is likely to appeal to children and adults who would rather not face the hassle of mastering more sophisticated, complicated and fiddly programmes. You may well find that you can use it successfully using trial and error!
COPYING SPACEPAINT FROM THE ARCHIMEDES WORLD DISK TO A NEW DISK:
(You will probably need to do this if you have a 1meg machine and you will have to do it anyway if you want to save pictures.)
1. If you click on 'Open Viewer', you will be able to see the !Space icon. (This needs to be "dragged" to the directory window of a blank, formatted disk.)
2. Put your blank, formatted disk in the drive and click on the disk-drive icon on the icon bar. An empty directory window will appear.
3. Move the mouse pointer to the !Space icon and, holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to the empty directory window for your blank disk. Release the mouse button and the copying will begin.
(On a machine with one disk drive you will need to swap disks when instructed to do so.)

HELP WITHIN SPACEPAINT: When you reach the main (Menu) screen of SpacePaint, you will see an icon just above the center of the screen with 'Help' on it. Click on this using the left or middle mouse button and a screenful of general instructions will be loaded up. (This file can also be found read from the desktop by clicking on the SpacePaint icon - which will appear when you load the programme - using the middle mouse button. A small menu will pop-up and you simply click on 'Main Help' using the left mouse button.)
More specific help within SpacePaint can be obtained by clicking on any tool icon (at the top of the Menu screen), or on the 'Files' option, using the middle mouse button.
GENERAL ADVICE: Make sure the SpacePaint disk is in when using the programme.
To be sure that there is no danger of losing your current picture, save it before you exit to the desktop.
The middle mouse button always returns you to the Menu
screen.

ENTERING THE PROGRAMME: When you click on the SpacePaint icon using the left mouse button, the programme will load and a similar icon will appear at the bottom of the screen on the icon bar. Click on this icon and you will see theTitle screen appear for about 3 seconds - you can speed this up by pressing any mouse button. Then you will see the main Menu screen.
THE MENU SCREEN: The paint colours are all laid out at the bottom of the screen and you can select a colour by moving the mouse pointer to the one youwant and clicking on it using the left mouse button. Your chosen colour will then be displayed in the box above the colours.
The 28 painting tools (pencil, brush, rubber etc) are all laid out at the top of the screen. In general, the top row has simpler tools, so this is a good place to start. (However, don't select the rubber until you have something to rub out!) Some of the tools on the bottom row are more complicated and need a picture to have been started before they can be used. (As already mentioned, help for each tool can be obtained by clicking on it using the middle mouse button.) A list of all the tools can be found later in this helpfile.
Select a tool by clicking on it using the left mouse button or, if it is already selected, just press the right mouse button. With the right mouse button, the pointer can be anywhere on the screen. Once a tool has been chosen, the Painting screen will replace the Menu screen and you can start your masterpiece. (The Painting screen is completely black to start with.
To return to the Menu screen at any time just press the middle mouse button.)
When you return to the Menu screen, you will see that the current tool standsout from the others because its colours have been inverted.
In the middle part of the Menu screen are options: 'Help','Fonts','Files'
etc.. You choose these by clicking on the one you want using the left mouse button.
'Fonts' allows you to choose a new typeface if you are using the Text tool
� ("A B C" on the bottom row of the tools).
'Files' allows you to save, load or delete a picture or to list pictures stored on disk. (Full instructions for this can be found by clicking on 'Files' with the middle mouse button. See also below.)
'Tool Sizes' works on some tools, allowing you to make it bigger or
smaller. (This can also be done on the Painting screen by using the Up
and Down cursor keys. This can even be done while you are painting and
can produce some interesting effects.)
'Clear' allows you to get rid of the current picture.
'Exit' will take you back to the desktop but you will still be able to
return to SpacePaint and your current picture by clicking on the
SpacePaint icon again - the one on the icon bar. (If you want to be sure
that you will not lose your current picture, save it before you exit.)
'Help' allows you to read the main help file.
'Grid On' will change to 'Grid Off' if you click on it. When the grid
(gridlock) is on, you will see a grid appear briefly every time you go to
the Painting screen. This is to remind you that the gridlock is on.
When the grid is on, a sort of invisible grid is placed over the Painting
screen which acts like a magnet to the tool you are using. This can be
very useful for some things as it enables you to be more precise, but it
can also be a nuisance when you are trying to do other things. You will
soon see what the gridlock does if you try it, but it will make no
difference when you are using the Pencil tool (top left).
MOUSE BUTTONS ON THE MENU SCREEN:
LEFT is for selecting or choosing.
MIDDLE is for calling for help when the pointer is on a tool or the Help icon or the Files icon.
RIGHT is to go straight to the Painting screen using the last tool.
THE PAINTING SCREEN: You reach the Painting screen when you click on any toolor, if the tool you want is already selected, by pressing the right mouse button from any position on the Menu screen.
To use a tool, you may first wish to adjust its size by using the UP and DOWNcursor keys. You can then begin using it by pressing the left mouse button and, in most cases, by moving the mouse. Sometimes you will need to click (press and release) the left mouse button, but in others you will need to hold it down.
In the middle of some actions - when making shapes, for example - you can abandon (stop) the task by pressing the right mouse button. This will not return you to the Menu screen and will not erase anything you have done priorto this particular action. So, for example, if you were drawing a series of triangles and didn't like the position where you were placing the latest one,you could press the right mouse button and move to a different position.
If you do not like something you have just drawn, all you have to do is pressthe DELETE key on the keyboard. This will put the picture back to the way it was when you last arrived. Doing this will rub out everything you have done since you last left the Menu screen. So, if you had just made nine triangles and didn't like the tenth one, pressing the DELETE key would remove it and the other nine as well! (You might be wiser to cover up the one you don't like by putting something on top of it or changing its colour so that it merges into the background.) Pressing DELETE will only work if you press it before you return to the Menu screen.
MOUSE BUTTONS ON THE PAINTING SCREEN:
LEFT is pressed when you are ready to use the tool. You may need to hold it down for some tools.
MIDDLE is to return to the Menu screen.
RIGHT is for abandoning ( stopping) a particular action if you are not happy with the way it is going.
KEYBOARD KEYS ON THE PAINTING SCREEN:
UP cursor key will increase the size of some tools.
DOWN cursor key will reduce the size of some tools.
DELETE will rub out what you have just been doing and will put the screen back as it was.
PAINTING TOOLS (top row, left to right):
PENCIL - draws a thin line.
BRUSH - paints like a brush. The thickness can be changed using the cursor keys.
RUBBER - rubs out. The size can be changed using the cursor keys.
LINE - draws straight, thin lines.
ARC - for drawing a curve like part of the outside of a circle.
RECTANGLE (unfilled) - draws a rectangular outline.
RECTANGLE (filled) - draws a filled-in rectangle.
CIRCLE (unfilled) - draws a circle outline.
CIRCLE (filled) - draws a filled-in circle.
SECTOR (unfilled) - draws an outline of a sector. (A sector is a section from a circle: see the shape on the icon.)
SECTOR (filled) - draws a filled-in sector.
TRIANGLE (unfilled) - draws a triangular ouline.
TRIANGLE (filled) - draws a filled-in triangle.
MULTICOLOUR - draws a series of circular discs as long as you press the left mouse button. The colour of the discs randomly changes so when you move the mouse you get a multicoloured sausage shape! The size can be changed using the cursor keys.
PAINTING TOOLS (bottom row, left to right):
DITHER - mixes the colour you have selected on the Menu screen with a particular colour area of colour on the Painting screen. The size can be changed using the cursor keys.
DASH - draws a diagonal line or, more interestingly, a series of diagonal lines. The size can be changed using the cursor keys.
TEXT - allows you to put writing on the Painting screen. You can choose from a range of fonts (typefaces) if you click on the 'Fonts' option on the Menu screen though you don't have to. When you type in your text, don't use any commas (,).
CAMERA - allows you to copy any rectangular area of screen you choose in another area of the picture.
SCISSORS - allows you to move any rectangular area of screen you choose to another area of the picture.
TILE - covers the whole picture with exact copies of a particular small rectangular area chosen from your picture.
INVERT - changes all the colours within a rectangular area of the picture: each colour is changed into its opposite. Thus, for example, black becomes white and yellow becomes blue.
SELECT - allows you to select a colour from your painting so that you can use exactly the same one again.
PARALLELOGRAM - draws a parallelogram.
PROPELLOR - draws a series of lines all joined together at a particular spot.
CHANGE - changes a particular colour within a rectangular area of the screen so that it becomes the currently selected colour on the Menu screen. Use the Fill tool for large and uncomplicated areas. The size of the spray can be changed using the cursor keys.
SPRAY - sprays dots of paint within a particular rectangular area. The size of the rectangular area can be altered using the cursor keys.
FILL - allows you to change colours. It works much more rapidly than the Change tool but isn't as good if there are lots of fiddly areas to be changed.
SMUDGE - smudges a rectangular area of the picture. The size of the rectangle can be changed using the cursor keys.
SAVING AND LOADING PICTURES: Click on the 'Files' option on the Menu screen and a new screen will appear with a 'SpacePaint File' icon at the top and four icons in the middle: 'Save', 'Load', 'Delete' and 'List'.
If you click on the 'SpacePaint File' icon it will change colour and become a'Sprite File' icon. This is because there are two separate picture directories on the SpacePaint disk. If you choose 'SpacePaint' file, the picture will be saved so that it takes up as little disk space as possible (compressed). It allows you to store more pictures on disk. You should only choose 'Sprite File':
1. if you want to try printing your picture;
2. if you want to load it into Paint;
3. if your picture is EXTREMELY detailed (fine-grained). (For some reason, extremely detailed pictures can take up more disk space in compressed form than when saved as a Sprite File!)
PRINTING A PICTURE: There is no software within SpacePaint which will enable you to print your picture.
