!readme

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Introduction
============
Using StarChart, you can produce star maps showing the position of many stars
and other objects as well as the planets. These starmaps are in the form of
Archimedes Draw files which means you can load them into !Draw for either
final editing or printing. They can also be dropped into most of the popular
DTP packages as illustrations.

Getting Started
===============
StarChart, requires access to certain Archimedes resources before it will work.
To put it simply, before you start StarChart, you must have opened a directory
viewer on both !System and !Fonts. StarChart will work with either the old font
manager or the new one. It does require the presence of the font Trinity.Medium
which you should have received with your RISC OS discs.

StarChart uses both the floating point emulator and the shared C library from
the !System folder.

If you run StarChart without making these resources available, it will complain
and give an error message.

One way of ensuring that things will work, is to make a copy of this disc and
then copy !System and !Fonts off your RISC OS discs onto it.

To run StarChart, open a directory viewer on the disc, and double click on
the !StarChart icon.

Windows
=======
Once you double click on !StarChart, three windows will appear. The first of
these, is a large white window in which star maps are draw ('the map window'),
the second is a smaller window titled 'StarChart' ('the controls window')
with a number of icons that allow you to control the star map that is draw.
The final wndow, appears behind the other two, but can be brought forward with
the mouse ('the planets window') again has a series of dialogue boxes which
allow you to set up the time for which the positions of the planets will be
displayed.

The general way you produce a star map, is to type the values for the section
of the sky you wish to display into the controls window, perhaps changing
the time in the planets window, and then click on the OK icon or type
RETURN. The star map is then draw in the map window. Clicking on the map
window with the middle mouse button, pops up a save box. You then drag the
file icon from this into a directory viewer and the star map is saved.
This file can be loaded at a later time into !Draw for printing or editing
or dropped into any of the usual Archimedes desk top publishing packages.
!Draw, can also be used to magnify maps to examine details.

When you have finished with !StarChart, closing the map window, will remove
the application from memory.

The Controls Window
===================
This has a number of icons that you can position the editing caret in by
clicking on them with the mouse pointer. Their purposes are as follows.

R.A.
====
This allows you to enter the Right Ascension of the centre of the Starchart.
RA can be in the range 0.00 to 24.00. Digits after the decimal point are
taken as minutes. Object positions can therefore be taken directly from a star
catalog.

Decl.
=====
Allows the declination of the centre of the starchart to be given.

N.S.
====
This controls the North/South range of the map in degrees of declination.

Title
=====
You can type in here, the Title you want to be written on your star map.

Mag. Limit
==========
Star limiting magnitude. This sets limits on the faintest stars displayed
on the ``master'' view.

Prt. Limit
==========
Label limiting magnitude. The new Yale database contains both a small set of
familiar names (for stars and special objects), plus an extensive list of
labels (Greek Bayer letter or Flamsteed numbers). Star names (including planet
names) always print for this small set. To avoid clutter, the labels may be
omitted below a cut-off magnitude by specifying this value.

Ann. Limit
==========
Greek/Flamsteed annotation magnitude. Labels printed for stars dimmer than
this value will use a Bayer or numerical label in favor of a proper name.
The default (2.05) includes nearly all well-known proper names including
Polaris, and excludes but a small number (such as Algol). Large values
generate charts full of obscure Arabian names, small (zero or negative) values
produce non-verbose charts, eg. ``a'', in Greek where possible, instead of
``Sirius''.

Search
======
You can type in here, a 3/4 character mnemonic for a constellation that
you want to display. This is a very easy way of using !StarChart.
The available constellations, are contained in the file !StarChart.con.locs.
This is a text file, which you can load into !Edit both to inspect or to
change. If a constellation is found, the values of RA, decl. and title
will be taken from the con.locs file.

Notice that this will overide any RA and decl. values you have set up.
Delete this entry to return to normal operation.

Some entries to try, are uma - Ursa Major, ple - Pleaides, cas - Cassiopea.

Finally, the controls window, has four switches that you can toggle on and
off by clicking on them.
These are.

Full Page
=========
This switch provides a single full-page of output, without a thumbnail-sized
finder chart. The legend placard is replaced with a single line banner giving
title, right ascension, declination and limiting magnitude. This mode is
useful for the construction of atlas pages. Because the page depicts the same
vertical scale in degrees of declination, the output will cover a slightly
reduced extent in right ascention.

Ann. Only
=========
This switch provides annotation-only (text) output: all stars and non-stellar
objects are omitted (including objects normally rendered by using alpha
characters). Borders and legends are left undisturbed. This feature is useful
in separating output detail, as when making (color) overhead transparencies.

Obj. Only
=========
This switch provides object-only output, and is the complement of the
above switch. When both switches appear together, all output is displayed.
This resembles the default case (neither switch), except in that case object
and annotation detail are written together. Here the software makes two
consecutive passes through all datasets and arranges output detail to be
written with all cosmic objects prefacing all related text annotations.

Ephem.
======
The file !StarChart.ephem.star containing ephemerides in the .star format,
will overlay the output. This is useful for generating constellation
boundaries, Milky Way isophots, and planet or satellite tracks. (The .star
format additionally includes records for vector and text annotation).

The Planets Window
==================
This window, allows you to set the time that will be used for calculating
the positions of the planets. It has a series of writeable icons for doing
this, whenver you start the program, they will be set from the real time clock.
The icons are as follows;

Time(hh.mm)
===========
The time in 09.30 format i.e. hours and minutes.

Month(mm)
The month in numeric form i.e. 09==September.

Day(dd)
=======
Day of the month 1-31.

Year
====
Current year in 1989 format.

GMT+(hh)
========
Hours west of GMT of the observer. The number of hours West of GMT that your
time zone is.

When return is pressed after entering any of these values, the bottom half
of the planets window will be updated. This shows the RA, decl and distance
for the major planets and the Sun.
You can type the RA and decl. values from this window, into the controls
window to find the planets on the star maps.

Epoch
=====
The program epoch converts right-ascension and declination data within
yale.star style datasets from epoch 1975.0 into the epoch 2000.0.
Either the first or both epoch dates may be overridden with command line
parameters (floating point values).
use *epoch to run this program.

Notes
=====
Sanson's sinusoidal projection is used to map coordinates.
This projection preserves both area and linearity in Declination (y axis).
It gives good conformality (angle correctness) near the equator, so it is
useful along the Ecliptic.
Lines of RA converge at the poles (unlike cylindrical projections),
though Cassiopeia and the Dipper reproduce well.
All .star file objects are for epoch E2000.

The Messier objects in
 messier.star
were taken from precessed E1975.0 data.
The additional NGC objects were taken from data in the star atlas by
 Norton
and precessed from E1950.0.
Descriptions and accurate magnitude values of all Messier objects were taken
from the 1988 edition of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC)
handbook.
