StarInfo/Smale/!WimpBar/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

You don't have to read all this file, but you just don't know what little gems
of wisdom aren't here, and unless you read it, you still won't, although they
still won't be, you might be, I am, but soon won't be and neither would you be
if you don't.

Just think what you'd be missing out on!

Boring Bit
----------

This application is freeware. You may pass on unaltered copies to whoever you
wish as long as no charge is made other than for media/postage, ie no profit.

If you have any bright ideas for an improvement, tell me and I can modify the
original and pass copies out to where they were so everyone can benefit from
the improvement.

What does it do?
----------------

Wimpbar provides a toolbar which sits at the top of your desktop, providing a
display of the memory (RAM) free in your machine, the current time, and a
selection of icons which you can set up to do whatever you want.

It is completely user configurable, and can have pull-down menus or just
options which run commands when clicked on.

Why does it do it?
------------------

Because I'm fed up with TidyClock crashing all the time, and Mike's fed up with
!Utilbar merely existing. Hopefully this will do the trick...

Customising
-----------

Inside the !WimpBar application (hold down Shift+Double click to open it),
there is a file called 'Config'. This holds the configuration and settings for
WimpBar.

The file DemoConfig is a demonstration file to show a)how a config file is
written and b) what the toolbar is like. Delete Config and copy DemoConfig as
Config. Please leave the DemoConfig file so this paragraph still makes sense if
you pass on a copy to anyone.

Toolbar Onscreen?
-----------------

The first line of the config file should be YES or NO, and refers to whether
the toolbar should be displayed onscreen all the time.

If you choose YES, the toolbar will appear at the top of the screen, behind all
other windows. Holding the ALT key will bring the bar temporarily to the front
of the other windows, and it will return to its old position when you let go.

If you choose NO, the toolbar will not be displayed at all unless you hold the
ALT key, when it will be displayed in front of all other windows. Letting go
will remove the bar from the screen again.

Icon Types
----------

After the initial YES/NO line, the definitions for the icons you want on the
bar begin.

Each icon can have a name up to ten characters long, and can either be a MENU
icon or an ACTION icon.

A menu icon will, when clicked, open a menu. This menu can have upto 30
options, each having a related * command which will be run if the option is
chosen from the menu.

An action icon, when clicked, will immediately run a series of * commands.
There can be upto 30 commands run from each action icon.

Icon Definition
---------------

Each icon is defined in order from left to right along the bar, and there can
be upto 15 icons in total. If more icons are used than can fit on-screen, the
bar will automatically scroll when the pointer comes near to the edge.

For a menu icon, you should have a line

#MENU

followed by another line giving the title of the icon (ie what is displayed on
the tool bar). Following this, are the menu entry text and star command for
each item to appear on the menu, each on separate lines.

If you wish to include a dotted separating line under an option, append an
underline character (_) to the end of the menu entry.

For an action icon, you should have a line

#ACTION

followed by another line giving the title of the icon (ie what is displayed on
the tool bar). Following this, is a list of the star commands to be run when
the icon is clicked on.

Ending the file
---------------

There is no specific way to round off the file; the end will be automatically
detected.

The Application Menu
--------------------

Clicking the middle button in the toolbar will open the WimpBar system menu.
The options are as follows:

Info : Leads to the standard info window
Help : Loads this file into an editor
Configure : Loads the config file into an editor for editing
Reset : Reloads the config file, taking any changes into account
Quit : Quits WimpBar

If you send a blank E/F format disc and SAE, I will return your disc with the
latest versions of this and my other freeware programs.

Disclaimer
----------

You balls it up = your problem.
My program ballses it up for you = your problem
Anything else goes wrong, - Blame it on next door's cat.

Having said that, write to me if you think the program is at fault, or could be
better, etc.

This has been tested and appears fine under Risc OS 3.5, and 3.11. I have not
tested it on Risc OS 2, and have no intention whatsoever of doing so.

Greetings
---------

Greetings do, of course go to the following:

Mike Whalley, Neil Dean, Sarah Webber, Zippy Gravenor, Mark & Darren Burt,
Anthony Tidd, Scott Latham, and anyone else who sees this and thinks they
should have been greeted too.

Thanks to Ben Summers for the !HelpGen application which I didn't actually use
at all on this application. Hmm.

Thanks to Guttorm Vik for putting an autosave in StongED. You wouldn't believe
how handy it is when the electricity company start playing silly bu*g*rs like
they did tonight!

Thanks to Mr Cornick, my computing teacher, for all those many many words of
wisdom... None spring to mind, but I'm sure there have been many.

Resources
---------

This program has taken the following to write:

2 phone calls
4 hours of actual programming
1 hour of sitting around in the dark during no less that THREE power cuts
tonight, thinking about actual programming and waiting for the electricity
company to find the fault and actually leave the power on instead of putting
it on for ten minutes and then turning it off again after just allowing time
for people to blow out their candles and start on their computer again.
5 minutes of sticking my head out of the bathroom window and wondering what on
earth the bizarre noise was (I still don't know)
2 Sausage rolls
2 Shandy cans
1 Glass of that funny fruit juice stuff that you have to dilute, that comes in
two varieties: Too strong, and too weak.
3 Sandwiches. It would have been four, but the fourth disappeared when the power
went off last and I blundered off into the bathroom and brushed by teeth.

So finally, I shall quote someone famous who probably once said this (don't know who, though):

BYE BYE.
