This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk --------------------------- March 1992 ---------- This is the March '92 issue of Archimedes World. We select only the best software for publication to make sure you have genuinely useful programs. Read about the programs in the magazine to understand how to use them fully. All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright Argus Specialist Publications, 1992. They may not be copied or resold except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be distributed as Public Domain. Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college is inclusive of a site licence for the software. Keep It Safe Before doing anything else, make a backup of this disk. Only use the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original. Archived The '!AWMar92' application contains all the Archimedes World software, stored in the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible it is archived using David Pilling's !Spark application. The '!AWMar92' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly well from there. Running To enable you to run software from the archive we use !ArcFS. This application allows loading of archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application directory. Copying Software When the '!AWMar92' application icon is dragged from the archive window to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least 1700k. If you have 2 Megabytes or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM disk and copy the 'March92' archive to there. This greatly speeds up the loading of software from the archive. You can copy individual programs from the cover disk by choosing the 'Open viewer' item from the Waiter disk menu. Once the application's directory viewer has opened up you can then drag the contents of the viewer to a blank disk. The files will be de-archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS. If you have any difficulties running software from the archive then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running them from there. Documentation All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World. Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to print. Using the Menu The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while others run applications or display text. To select a menu item click the select button once over its icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop. To get the menu back, click on the waiter on the icon bar. The menu will appear exactly as you left it. To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen. Read the instructions before you run the programs as they tell you what to do when using them. The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option which takes you back to the previous menu. The Demos Virtual Reality has arrived on the Archimedes! This demo allows you to try out the features of the powerful 3D Construction Kit from Domark. With the full package you can design objects, rooms, buildings, cities, in fact entire worlds can be modelled. The purpose of the 3D Construction Kit is to allow you to create and play your own Virtual Reality games. Cataclysm is a uniquely original action game from The Fourth Dimension. Play the three exclusive Archimedes World levels in this demo to get a taste of what the complete game is like. Instructions are neatly presented when the demo is started so you can find out how to play the demo and where to get the full game. Gallop is an shining example of the kind of animations which you can create using the Animal Animator suite of programs. Animal Animator is exclusively available through the Archimedes World software sale. The Programs If you have ever been frustrated by hours of work being lost on your computer because of a 'File Core in use' error then the !FCoreAid utility will be a welcome sight. This simple desktop tool will reset the File Core with a double click on its icon. This enables you to save your desktop application documents even after a 'File Core in use' error has reared its ugly head. Star Gazer is for all you astronomers. It displays a view of the heavens in a desktop window. Menu options allow you to zoom in or out, show constellations, highlight planets and much, much more. You may find this application helpful in exploring astronomy as a new and fascinating hobby. Encode 4 is one of the best desktop file encryption programs around. It offers two levels of security and the important facility of remembering the filetype of encrypted files. Just drag the file to be scrambled to the Encode4 window, enter a password and the file is rendered unreadable. Do exactly the same to a previously scrambled file and it will be fully restored. ClickDir is a simple utility which will set the currently selected directory (CSD) to that of any directory icon which has been double clicked on the desktop. This means that you can perform a * command on a file in a directory you have just opened without having to alter the CSD with the *DIR command. Algebra is a simple-to-use algebraic calculator. It is well suited to handling mathematical problems and processing equations of all types. A comprehensive Help window provides on-line information while you are using the application. Regular Features The missing text files which should have accompanied the Arc Automaton software on the January '92 cover disk are supplied on this disk. We apologise for any confusion caused by the omission of these files. Viruses We take viruses seriously here at Archimedes World so our cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free. We can only check for known viruses and there is the small possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking procedure. This unfortunately happened on the February '92 cover disk. A virus known as the 'module virus' had infected the modules which were part of the Micro Drive Demo. The virus is relatively harmless and becomes active after 1st September 1992. After that date it displays a message every time a module is run. We have supplied two programs on this disk which will enable you to check through all of your disks to kill any occurences of this virus which may have spread to them. Please note that the Micro Drive Demo is stored on the February '92 cover disk in a read-only archive. This means that the virus killers will not be able to remove the virus from that disk. To prevent the virus spreading always reset your Archimedes with a CTRL and RESET after using the Micro Drive Demo. This prevents the infected modules from staying in the computer's memory. Simply pressing RESET alone will not remove the modules from the computer's memory. Earn �800 We pay up to �800 for software published in Archimedes World. It does not have to be very detailed, just clear enough to give us an accurate idea of what the progam will be able to do and what benefits it will bring.
