Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plan F is a versatile and sophisticated flow diagram editor. The creation of
flow diagrams has always been difficult, mainly due to the need for often
specialised flow diagram boxes in which text can be easily arranged. The
easiest method being to create the boxes in !Draw and copy as required.
Unfortunately the use of !Draw makes drawing arrowed lines complex and
messy, and all text would have to be manually positioned.
Plan F overcomes all these obstacles by allowing the user to use pre-defined
flow box shapes, link together with arrows, and format all text in the boxes
automatically. The program is designed primarily for use with computer
science flowcharts (both program and system) hence the pre-defined shapes
are specific to these types of flowchart; but nevertheless the program can
equally be applied to chemical process diagrams, management diagrams, etc.
(see example files for such applications).
The program is fully RISCOS (2/3) compliant, using both the Acorn Outline
Font Manager and RISCOS Printer Drivers.
Installing and Executing the Program
~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~
The program will operate from both floppy and hard disc, although the latter
is considerably more flexible. The program disc contains both the program
(and some sample files) and a !Fonts folder. The Plan F program requires
access to the "FLOWBOXES" font in order to operate fully. The other fonts in
the folder are optional. Floppy disc owners can simply double click on the
!Fonts directory to use the fonts there. Hard Disc Owners should copy the
contents of the PlanF !Fonts directory into their main !Fonts directory
folder on their hard disc and reboot the main !Fonts folder.
The program is loaded by double clicking on the !PlanF icon in the filer
window. After a brief pause the introduction page will appear. Clicking the
mouse on the screen will cause the page to disappear, leaving the PlanF
program icon on the icon bar, ready for use.
The Structure of this "Manual"
~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
The rest of this "manual" consists of two main parts. Firstly each of the
main types of operation is described below together with all the other
facilities available. Then in the second part, a tutorial will guide less
experienced users through the same kind of operations using a simple example
as a guide. It is recommended that this help file is printed out so that
users can actually learn to use PlanF by following the tutorial and creating
the same example file, returning to the first part of the manual for
reference when necessary.
PART ONE - THE REFERENCE SECTION

Creating a new Document
~~~~~~~~ ~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~
PlanF document files contain many individual pages (like real documents),
which are accessed in a manner similar to accessing files in a filer window.
To create a new document, simply position the pointer over the PlanF icon on
the icon bar and click once with SELECT. This will open a new, blank
document window. Pages are represented by small icons in this window.
Clicking MENU over the document window causes the main document menu to be
displayed. The options are similar to those used by the RISCOS filers,
except for the create page, and PRINT options. To initially create a new
page, click on the "New Page" option with SELECT. A page icon will appear in
the document window.
Such document pages can then be copied, renumbered, or deleted in the usual
way, by highlighting the pages by clicking on them with SELECT or ADJUST, or
by using the Select / Clear All menu options.
The choice of paper size (Portrait Only) is available via another menu
options, and this controls the paper size of all the pages in the document.
To open a page, simply double click on it with SELECT or ADJUST. This will
cause a page window to open, in which the flow diagram can be created.
Creating and Editing a Flow diagram
~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~ ~~~~ ~~~~~~~
Having opened a blank page (as directed above). The page window consists of
the diagram area and the toolbox. The toolbox is a strip of icons attached
to the left hand side of the diagram area. Clicking on MENU when the pointer
is over the diagram area brings up the Page Menu. This menu contains all the
facilities for creating and editing flow diagrams (some of which are
duplicated by the toolbox) - the options are similar to those available in
!Draw and hence should be familiar to use.
Bring up the Page Menu (as described above) and move the pointer along the
"Enter" option, and then along the "Operation" entry, and click on the
"Preparation" entry. We have now selected the Preparation style flow box for
use. In a similar way, all the other types of flow box can be selected.
Now, move the pointer over a blank section of the diagram area and click on
SELECT; then drag the pointer with SELECT held down. As you do this, the
preparation box will be drawn between the starting position and the current
pointer position. When you're satisfied with the shape, simply release
SELECT and the flow box will be drawn. If you had wished to abort the
operation, simply drag the pointer outside the diagram area and then release
SELECT.
Having drawn a flow box, we can now manipulate it in several ways. Before we
can alter it in any way, we must change from Enter mode to Select mode. This
is performed by clicking on the "Select" page menu entry itself.
Firstly, we can copy the box; this is performed by clicking on the box so
that it's highlighted by a red cross. Then choose the "Select" option on the
Page Menu, followed by the "Copy" option. The flow box will now be copied to
an adjacent position.
To move the original away from the new copy, first deselect the new copy,
either by double clicking on the new copy or using the "Clear Section"
option on the Page Menu (it comes under "Select"). NB. Clicking on an empty
section of the page has a similar effect. Now select the original box by
clicking with SELECT, but hold down the SELECT button and drag the box
outline to the new position, releasing SELECT when in the desired position.
Performing the above with the ADJUST button (instead of SELECT) will stretch
the flow box rather than moving it.
NB. Groups of objects can be highlighted by clicking SELECT over a blank
section of the page and dragging the dot-dash box over the groups of objects
to be highlighted.
Other operations that can be performed on selected boxes are Delete, and
force object to front or back of the page.
Entering Flow lines
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~
So far we've only dealt with flow boxes, but flow lines can be entered in a
similar way. Choose the "Flowline" option (comes under "Enter") from the
page menu. Now in the same way as above, click SELECT on the page, and drag
the line from the starting point to the desired end point and release
SELECT. One extra feature is the ability to break a line without having to
reposition the line (ie. it provides a CONTINUOUS LINE option) - to break a
line at a given point whilst dragging the line, simply press the <RETURN>
key once at the required point. One drawn, the line can be manipulated in a
similar way to the box (above).
Entering text into a Flow Box
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~ ~~~~ ~~~
Having drawn some flow boxes and lines, we can enter some text into one of
the flow boxes. This is performed by highlighting the box required and then
choosing the "Alter Text" menu option (it comes under "Select"). A dialogue
box appears, into which you type the text to be positioned in the box. The
'|' (bar) symbol has a special meaning - it causes a Carriage Return and
Linefeed to be inserted - useful for breaking up the text in paragraphs.
Press RETURN or click on OK to finish entering/editing text.
NB. The text box consists of a dotted line which is used as a screen guide
only; any text entered in a text box will appear on a printout (or when
saved as a "Drawfile") as simply text, with no text box surrounding it.
Altering the style of Objects
~~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~ ~~ ~~~~~~~
It is possible to alter the appearance of the objects comprising the
flow diagram. Firstly highlight the object(s) to be altered (see above for
details). Now move the pointer across "Style" entry in the page menu, and
the various style options will be displayed.
Flowlines can have their colour, arrow direction & position, and line style
altered. The options are fairly self-explanatory and are similar to that
used in !Draw.
Flow boxes can have their outline colour, fill colour, box type, text size,
text font (outline), text colour, text layout, and text background hue
altered. The options are self-explanatory and are similar to that
used in !Draw.
Zoom Facilities
~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
In common with other RISCOS programs, PlanF provides a Zoom facility.
Choosing the "Zoom" menu option brings up a ratio box, which allows the user
to zoom in closer or further away from a flow diagram. The left digit is the
amount zoomed in, and the second digit is the amount zoomed out.
Gridlock
~~~~~~~~
To enable straight lines to be drawn, and to enable boxes be drawn parallel,
a gridlock facility is provided. The various options are accessed via. the
"Grid" menu entry. The options are to display the grid, lock points drawn to
the grid, and to change the colour and spacing of the grid. The options are
self-explanatory and are similar to that used in !Draw. NB. objects already
drawn can be locked to a grid by highlighting them and selecting the "Snap
to Grid" option (it comes under "Select").
Undo
~~~~
The "Undo" menu option (comes under "Misc") will undo the last delete object
performed if activated.
Toolbox and "Hot Keys"
~~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
The use of the RISCOS menu system is user-friendly but slow to use once a
user has gained familiarity with the program. Hence two alternatives are
available :-
Firstly the toolbox attached to the left hand side of the screen allows the
user to enter a box / line, change to select mode and alter the text in a
box. The first five icons allow the choice of flow box to be altered. By
clicking with SELECT on them a sub-menu of the flow box types is displayed
(eg. Operation, Storage, etc.) from which one can be chosen. NB. Each of the
flow box icons depicts the shape of flowbox drawn. The sixth icon selects
Flowline Entry. The seventh icon changes operation to Select (as opposed to
Entry) mode and is equivalent to clicking on the "Select" menu entry. The
final icon simply displays the text entry dialogue box when selected.
Many of the menu entries have a set of symbols following the option name,
these are called the "Hot Keys" entries. The symbols following the name
refer to the combination of keys needed to execute that function without
needing to wade through the main menu. The conventions used are :-
~ means hold down CTRL
� means hold down SHIFT
eg. ~�F1 means hold down CTRL and SHIFT and press the function key F1.
A complete list of "hot keys" is shown below :-

Saving and Loading
~~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~~~
Three saving formats exist in PlanF, namely Document, Flowpage, and
Drawfile. Choosing the "Save" or "Select -> Save" options from the document
window will save as a Document file, either the whole document or selected
pages respectively.
Choosing the "Save -> Flowpage" or "Select -> Save -> Flowpage" options from
the page window will save as a Flowpage file, either the whole page or
selected objects respectively.
Choosing the "Save -> Draw" or "Select -> Save -> Draw" options from the
page window will save as a Draw file, either the whole page or selected
objects respectively.
The normal filetype to use is the Document type. This saves the entire
document, and can be reloaded either by double clicking on the file or
dragging to the PlanF icon on the icon bar. Two documents can be merged by
loading one in, and then dragging the other onto the document window of the
first.
The Flowpage filetype is used to copy single pages between documents or to
copy groups objects between pages. The file icon can either be dragged onto
an open document window or an open page window, but it can NOT be dragged
onto the icon bar, or double clicked upon.
The Draw filetype does NOT belong to PlanF, and files saved in this format
can NOT be reloaded into PlanF. Its sole purpose is to export PlanF pages
into other programs, eg. !Draw, Impression, Ovation, Genesis II, etc. which
accept Drawfile format files.
Printing
~~~~~~~~
PlanF uses the standard RISCOS printer drivers for printing. To print a
document, simply load in the RISCOS driver and select the "Misc -> Print"
option in the main document menu, and follow the instructions.
Customisation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This final section deals with the preferences that the user can choose when
using PlanF. To alter the preferences, click the MENU mouse button over the
PlanF icon on the icon bar, and choose the "Preferences" option. A dialogue
box of the available options will be displayed. The first option
forces the program to enable the gridlock on all pages created subsequently.
PlanF comes with several outline fonts (see installation details) and hence
the default font used for text is one of the ones supplied. But most
programs default to Trinity.Medium which is one of the standard fonts
supplied with the computer. If this option is selected it simply forces
PlanF to use Trinity.Medium as the default font instead.
The remainder of the available options allows the user to change the default
fill colour to be used for different categories of flow box. Having altered
the settings, click on either "Cancel", "Save", or "OK". Cancel abandons the
changes, OK accepts the changes and stores them in memory only, and Save
commits the changes to disc.
PART TWO - THE BEGINNERS TUTORIAL

Having loaded the PlanF program (as described above), the PlanF application
should be displayed on the RISCOS icon bar on the bottom of the screen.
1) Click on the PlanF icon on the icon bar with SELECT (Left mouse button);
this causes a blank document window to be created and displayed on the
screen.
2) Position the pointer over the middle of the document window and press
MENU (Middle mouse button). This causes the main DOCUMENT menu to be
displayed on the screen.
3) Carefully move the pointer down the entries in the menu list until the
pointer is over the entry marked "New Page" and then click SELECT. This
causes a new page to be created in the document window (an icon marked
"Page"). Further pages can be created in a similar way.
4) Having created a page, position the pointer over the "Page" icon in the
DOCUMENT window. Quickly Double Click the Left mouse button whilst the
pointer is over the "Page" icon. This causes the main PAGE window to be
opened to the top of the screen. It is in this page that all the flowboxes
are drawn.
5) The main PAGE window consists of the "drawing area" where the flowcharts
are drawn and the toolbox on the left hand side allows rapid access (instead
of via. standard RISCOS menus) to the various "drawing tools" and other
options. To start with, click (with SELECT) on the toolbox icon third from
the top (the one with the 'C' in the icon) - this contains all the flow box
shapes related to connections, terminations, etc. This causes a dialogue box
to be opened containing all the relevant flow box types.
6) Click (with SELECT) on the top left icon (the one that looks like
a rectangle with rounded ends) - this is a terminator flow box. This selects
this flowbox as the current one for drawing with.
7) Move the pointer over the main drawing area and choose a point on the
window where you want the bottom left hand corner of the box to begin and
click and hold down the left mouse button at the appropriate point.
8) Whilst keeping SELECT held down, drag the pointer to the position where
you would like the top right hand corner to be, and release the left mouse
button. The chosen flow box (the terminator in this case) will be drawn in
the space marked out by the mouse.
9) Having drawn the flow box outline, the next step will be to enter some
text in the flow box. First, click on the arrow icon on the toolbox to
switch to Select mode (as opposed to Drawing mode).
10) Then position the pointer over the flowbox just drawn and click SELECT.
The flow box will be highlighted. NB. Groups of flow boxes can be
highlighted by clicking on them with ADJUST. Now click on the text icon on
the toolbox (the bottom one marked "Aa"). A dialogue box will appear,
prompting you to enter some text. Type in "Start" followed by <RETURN>. The
text will then appear in the Default font (see the section on Customisation
- above) in the flow box. Clicking on the background of the drawing area
with SELECT will then de-highlight the flow box.
11) To change the style of box or text within the box, firstly highlight the
desired flow box (as described in 9 & 10). Then bring up the PAGE menu by
positioning the pointer over the main drawing area and clicking MENU (Middle
mouse button). Carefully move the pointer onto the "Style" menu entry and
move the pointer right along the arrow so that the sub-menu opens. The menu
items in black are those which relate to the flow box and/or text within it.
By bring up the relevant sub-menus, you can alter the font name, font size,
text colour, background colour, box outline colour, text layout, etc. For
example, move the pointer across the "Text Layout" menu entry, bringing up
the relevant sub-menu, followed by clicking with SELECT upon the "Centred"
menu option. This will cause the text in the flow box to be
horizontally centred rather than left aligned.
12) Highlight the terminator flow box drawn previously (as in 9 & 10), then
bring up the main PAGE menu (as in 11) and move the pointer along the
"Select" menu entry and then click on the "Copy" option on the sub-menu. A
second copy of the terminator box will be copied BEHIND the one previously
drawn.
13) Highlight the new copy of the flow box, but hold down SELECT instead of
releasing the SELECT mouse button. The highlight box will be replaced by a
coloured box in the shape of the flowbox highlighted. Now drag the pointer
to another part of the screen whilst holding down the SELECT mouse button;
this causes the outline of the flow box to be "dragged" around the screen
with the pointer. When the new copy of the box is in another part of the
screen (preferably below the original), release SELECT and the flow box will
be redrawn at the new position. NB. If this procedure is performed with
ADJUST rather than SELECT, the flow box will alter in size as the pointer
moves rather than moving the whole box around.
14) We now want to change this "terminator" box into a different one, for
example a "Process" (rectangular) box. This is achieved by firstly
highlighting the newer flow box. Then bring up the main PAGE menu (as in 11)
and move the pointer along the "Style" menu entry bringing up the sub-menu;
then move the pointer along the "Alter Box Type" menu entry, then along the
"Operation" menu entry (the process box that we want is classed as an
Operation type of flow chart box - see the various toolbox icons for details
of how the various flow boxes are classed in categories), before clicking
with SELECT upon the "Process" entry. The "terminator" style flow box will
now have become a rectangular "Process box".
15) The final component of any flow diagram is the entry or flow lines to
link the boxes. This is achieved by simply clicking on the Flowline icon in
the toolbox (the one above the Text Entry icon). Then position the pointer
over the main drawing area where you would like the bottom-left end of the
line to appear. Then depress and hold down SELECT, and in a similar way to
that used in 7 & 8 (above), drag the line with the pointer to the position
for the top-right end of the line. Upon releasing SELECT, a line will be
drawn between the two positions. NB. The direction of the arrow on the line
will always be draw pointing from start to finish. To break the line without
ending the drag operation, simply press the <RETURN> key once. This is
useful when drawing a series of flowlines that follow on from each other.
16) To change the line attributes, firstly highlight the flow line just
drawn (in a similar way to highlighting a flow box). Then bring up the main
PAGE menu (as in 11) and drag the pointer right over the "Style" menu entry.
The entries in black refer to those applicable to the flow line. You can
change the colour of the flow line, the style of the line (dot - dash,
solid, etc.) or the position and direction of the arrow on the line. For
example, drag the pointer right across the "Flow Line Arrow" entry, and
click with SELECT upon "End". This causes the arrow on the line to be
positioned at the end of the line as opposed to the middle of the line.
17) Another way of highlighting contents of the screen is to switch to
Select mode (as in 9) and click on the page somewhere with SELECT. Then hold
down SELECT and drag the pointer across the screen. A dot-dash box is then
dragged along with the pointer. Upon releasing the mouse button, any objects
enclosed within the box will be highlighted - this is useful for
highlighting groups of objects.
18) Finally, we need to Save and Print the created flow diagram. This is
achieved by firstly bringing up a 'Filer' window (if you are unsure about
this, please consult the RISCOS user guide). Then position the pointer over
the DOCUMENT (not the PAGE) window (the one with the 'Page' icon(s) in it)
and click MENU (middle mouse button). This will bring up the DOCUMENT menu.
Now, drag the pointer right across the "Save" menu entry. Then the Save
dialogue box will appear.
19) Firstly, delete the filename given ("FlowChart") and enter "MyFile1";
then position the pointer over the "F" file icon in the dialogue box and
press and hold down the SELECT mouse button. Then drag the pointer over the
Filer window and release the mouse button. The flowchart will now be saved
for future use (the files are loaded in the normal way by double clicking on
the 'F' file icons in the filer window).
20) To print a PlanF document, first load in the appropriate RISCOS2/3
printer driver application (see the RISCOS user guide if you are unsure how
to so this). Then position the pointer over the DOCUMENT (not the PAGE)
window (the one with the 'Page' icon(s) in it) and click MENU (middle mouse
button). This will bring up the DOCUMENT menu. Now, drag the pointer right
across the "Misc." menu entry. Then click with SELECT upon the "Print" entry
in sub-menu. This will bring up the Print dialogue box. Simply click with
SELECT upon the "Print" icon and the flow diagram will be dumped to printer.
21) Having now created a sample file, practise creating practical flow
diagrams, using Section One for reference whenever necessary!
