VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/PHOTOS

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

CE PHOTOGRAPH COMPARISONS

As an additional section of this project I now intend to
see how various areas of land use around Chipstead differ from the
begining of the century to the end of it. The following pages show
four picture postcards from around 1900 against four photographs
whichI took of the same sites in Chipstead.

Turning to the photographs of Station Parade first, it can
be clearly seen that while the road just lay empty next to a field
in 1900 today it possesses a large number of shops (for Chipstead
anyway). Although blocked out by the shops, it is also true that
behind the road lie a number of houses leading into Coulsdon and
not just an empty field.

I think that the main reason for this change is Chipstead
station, which has become more used in the last 100 years. People
would want to live nearer to it and so houses would grow up,
followed by shops to support people's local requirements. However I
also believe that this change has come about because of the
development of Chipstead and its increased popularity with people
looking for a quiet rural village which is still not too isolated.

The two photographs of the pub, 'The White Hart', are
obviously very similar. I only chose this site to show that certain
places are more likely to stay the same over a long period of time
than others. A public house is probably one of the best examples of
this and I think that because demand for it would still be as great
as ever, if not more, it has remained there to this day.

Taking the two photographs of the golf course next, this is
another example of a place remaining because of its continued use.
However, in the modern photograph houses can also be seen in the
distance. This highlights the fact that the growth of housing
requirements has made itself noticed in Chipstead. These 'new'
houses are actually on the old site of the golf course, thus
reducing its area. I also noticed the growth of trees seperating
these houses from the club and to me this looks like a sort of wall
which has sprung up in an attempt to prevent further development on
the golf course.

The finalcomparison involves 'Chipstead Bottom' or Outwood
Lane. The white building with the red roof in both the pictures is
Dean Farm and this is now quite old,and has been preserved by
turning it into a restaurant. The field on the left of the road is
still used today, allthough when I was doing my project it was left
fallow (like many of the others).

Hopefully these photographs help highlight some of the
points made in my project and show just what sort of a place
Chipsteadreally is - a rural village which has only really
developed gradually in the last 100 years.
