ArtToSpr/WavePlayer/Help/TextHelp/4e-Wrong

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

  Please note that, although this is a slightly technical section, that every
user of Wave Player should read this.

MEDIA TOO SLOW
==============

  Just before Wave Player begins playing a sample, it does a quick test on
the speed of the media (ie. hard/floppy disc, etc.). If the sample rate is
very much over the speed of the media, then a warning is given, giving the
option to close the sample. If the difference is not that much, then a weaker
warning is given.

  Whilst Wave Player has been designed and written to be as robust as
possible, if the media is not fast enough, then the computer may become
unusable, or even lock up. The solution is to do one of two things: The
first is to click on the stop icon, and hold down Control and Escape. The
second is to try to remove the disc. The latter obviously must be a last
resort, and can only apply to media such as floppy discs, Zip discs, or
Syquest discs.

DISC IS REMOVED
===============

  When Wave Player attempts to load the next part of the sample, and the disc
is not present, then the operating system kindly presents a Please insert
disc message. From here, you have two options: Firstly, you can replace the
disc, and click OK; alternatively, you can click on Cancel. In the latter
case, the sample becomes effectively paused. You will need to press stop,
then play to get the sample working again. However, you are better advised to
eject the sample.

  If during the waiting period, Wave Player comes to try to load the next
part of the sample, then an overrun check stops the present buffer from being
refilled. This means that if you are slow about finding the correct disc,
then you will have a small time of silence before the sample is restarted.
This is unavoidable, and very reasonable!

FILE IS CLOSED
==============

  If you attempt to close the file that Wave Player is using, either by
dismounting the disc, or manually (eg. *Shut, *Shutdown, CLOSE#...), then
Wave Player will start playing silence. To remedy the problem, click on the
eject button. You will almost certainly get the message Handle is illegal or
has been close. Click OK, and then you are free to start playing samples
again.
