This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Help file for Encode Version 4 By Timothy Kimber October 1991 To Run, double click on the !Encode4 icon. To use, drag a file into the window or on the icon on the iconbar. The '?' in the main window will change and you can then type in a password of up to 20 characters. By clicking on the window, or on the iconbar icon, or by selecting the 'Options' menu choice, another window opens. This one contains 5 toggle icons, the first two being 'New Format' (this is the default option). This is a safer style of encoding than the 'Old format' which was included for compatability. The next 2 Options are 'Hourglass On' and 'Hourglass Off', for short files (approx 50-60 K), the hourglass does not need to be on. The last option is 'Extra Secure', this option allows multiple encoding of files. This is done by dragging in a file and typing in a password, then dragging it in again and typing in a different password. Instead of reporting 'Wrong Password' it encodes the file with this new password. However, no checksum or file type is saved and so when decoded it will have the filetype 'Data', also if you forget the password(s) then you have lost the file. The 'save' icon allows the current settings of the options to be saved onto disk and reloaded automatically when the program is next run. Directories can be encoded too, this is done by dragging a directory onto the window, the directory picture is shown, and then a password can be typed in. This password is applied recursively to each file inside the directory. (NB weird things happen if you double click an encoded application). Note The application starts off with 32K of memory and expands when a file is encoded (shrinking back to 32K afterwards), however if there is not enough memory then an error will be reported and the file will remain (although the password will not). This means that if there are any errors while encoding then the original file is not corrupted. However, if possible, I recommend encoding from the RAM disc for safety. Note 2 When run, the program automatically checks the files in its directory. This means that most, if not all, viruses will be spotted immediately.
