Many thanks for iss 15.Quite superb if I may say so,what a letters
page!!!The reason I'm writing is that I am hoping somebody might me be
able to help me out via the problem page.The question.Is it possible by
use of a suitable program in DFS to make my Elk think that Drive 1 is
Drive 0 ?
Firstly a bit of background info.I have a 64k Elk with an original
Acorn+3 (L shaped with BUILT IN 3.5in 2 sided drive).This has ADFS v1.0
with Zysyshelp built in.On the back of +3 is my original Acorn +1 with
AP2 upgrade installed (PRES).I have DFS on Rom chip which plugs into my
+1 via a rom cartridge (ACP advanced electron DFS).I also have an
external 5.25in drive with own psu which interfaces via a c/b edge conn
on rear of +3.
Right now as you know one of the best way of getting stuff for the Elk
is by scouring Micro-Mart,car boot sales etc for old Elk and compatible
Beeb stuff.The problem is most Beeb software is on 5.25 disc and some
needs to be Auto Booted.With ADFS this isn't a problem as you just
*mount1 and shift-break and it will auto boot drive 1.However DFS won't
let youdo this,it will only auto boot on Drive 0.
In some cases I can get round this by backing up onto a 3.5in disc.The
problem seems to lie with these dual format 40/80 jobs and certain discs
are backup protected.With some of the 40/80 discs when you try to back
up I get a "WRONG SIZE" error whether I try to back up onto a 40T disc
oran 80T disc (my DFS allows you to format either).Perhaps one of our
aceprogrammers knows a way round this.
Obviously I could take my +3 and external drives to bits and swapthe
Drive select options or get another Elk set up which would allow me to
have a 5.25 in drive as Drive 0 but I don't really want to go to these
lengths. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS WITH BEEB DISKS. I
USUALLT *EXEC !BOOT THE BOOT FILE AND CAN BACKUP MOST DISKS USING ADT
*XFER. HOWEVER I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS ESPECIALLY WHEN ONE FILE CALLS UP
ANOTHER AND SPECIFYS DRIVE 0. I CAN THINK OF A HARDWARE SOLUTION BUT A
SOFTWARE SOLUTION MUST EXIST. AT LEAST TWO OF US WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT
SO IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS,
SEND IT IN.
