BBCFontEd is a utility to create and edit BBC fonts within the desktop environment. A number of useful tools are available for character editing.
How to use BBCFontEd
On loading, BBCFontEd will install on the iconbar. Clicking MENU on its icon opens the main BBCFontEd menu. Clicking SELECT on the icon opens the character selection window.
The Menu Options
'Info' displays the BBCFontEd information window giving the current version number.
'Default Set' reverts all characters to their original system font state.
'Original Set' reverts all characters to their state when BBCFontEd was loaded.
'Show Tools' opens the BBCFontEd Tools window, explained below.
'Save' will save the font currently being edited if a pathname is present. A pathname can be entered from the save dialogue window. Alternatively, the BBC Font icon can be dragged to a directory viewer, or 'OK' can be clicked on if a full pathname if present.
'Quit' closes the application, opening a verification window if the font currently being edited is unsaved.
Note : If a BBC Font file is dragged onto the BBCFontEd icon, it will be automatically loaded and its pathname will appear in the save dialogue window.
Also, if BBCFontEd finds a BBC Font in its application directory called 'NewFont' it will be automatically loaded when BBCFontEd is run.
The Character Selection and Editing Windows
The numbers around the characters window show the ASCII codes for the current page of characters. Clicking SELECT on one of the characters in this window opens an editing window containing the chosen character in enlarged form. Clicking on the grid in the edit window with SELECT, MENU or ADJUST will reverse, set or clear the selected bit, respectively. The scroll pane attached to the edit window allows the character to be scrolled by clicking on one of the arrow icons.
Clicking MENU on the character selection window opens the second BBCFontEd menu. Some menu options are the same as those on the icon menu. 'Edit' is added to allow you to enter the ASCII code of the character you wish to edit instead of clicking on the character in the selection window. There is also an 'Options' submenu to allow the scroll pane to be turned on or off, its position changed and to set to screen to automatically update after a character has been edited.
BBCFontEd Tools
This window is at the heart of BBCFontEd, allowing many operations to be carried out. Select the required tool by clicking on the radio icon next to it. Enter the range of characters you wish the tool to be applied to (a single character if the second input box is left blank or has the same value as the first) and then click on the OK icon or press RETURN. It is possible to enter the required character range by clicking ADJUST on the characters in the character selection window. Clicking on the 'Apply to Current' icon just applies the tool to the currently selected character.
Clear : This clears the specified lines of the character(s).
Set : This sets the specified lines in the character(s).
Inverse : This reverses the specified lines in the character(s).
Copy : This copies the specified lines of the first character to the second.
Swap : This swaps the specified lines of 2 characters.
Oblique : This tilts the character(s), making it oblique rather than italic. Type 2 gives a greater tilt than type 1.
Flip : Characters can be flipped on the X axis or the Y axis.
Rotate : This rotates the character(s) 90� clockwise.
Thin : This makes the specified lines of the character(s) thinner.
Bold : This thickens the specified lines of the character(s).
Lines : These 8 icons allow the tools to be applied only to specified lines of the characters. By default they are all on. Lines are applied to all options apart from oblique, flip and rotate.
Page : These icons allow you to edit characters not initially visible in the character selection window. The page you wish to turn to can be entered using the arrow icons. Click on 'Show page' to open the new page.
All Alphanumeric : This will apply the selected tool to all uppercase, lowercase and numeric characters.
Default Character : This reverts the currently selected character to either its default or original state. Its default state is its internal system font state. Its original state is its state when BBCFontEd was loaded. Clicking ADJUST toggles the icon between its two states.
Save Characters : This allows you to enter the range of characters to be saved. Press RETURN to open the save dialogue window.
Grid : This sets the wimp palette colour for the grid in the edit window. A negative value turns the grid off.
