This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Limitations
-----------
This demo version of MathsBook illustrates most of the features of the full version: naturally some have been disabled:
Printing
The full version can print out performance records and worksheets containing 'sums' of the kind the child got wrong for further practice away from the computer.
Saving
Although you can explore the options and change them for the example children provided, you can't save them. Neither can you add new children.
Promotion/Demotion
The full version of MathsBook can automatically move children up and down levels across sessions via its save feature. This is normally a slow and gentle process but you can get an idea of how it works within the limitations of the demo. Go to the options screen for any child (menu button over the MathsBook icon - choose options), set the number of questions to 20 or 30 and reduce the number of right and wrong answers required to change levels. If you reduce these both to 1 you will get a very quick demonstration of the way MathsBook reacts.

Using the Demo Version
----------------------
If you have a hard disc, the demo can be copied onto it, but you will have to copy the fonts into your fonts directory in the usual way, and reset your computer, before you run MathsBook.
MathsBook is only compatible with RISC OS 3. Put the floppy disc in the drive and double click on !Fonts, then double-click on !MBookDemX or !MBookDem�. The program will load. The floppy disc must be left in the drive all the time.
After the title screen has gone away, double click on Mfiles_X or Mfiles_�. When the Load/new group window appears you will see 'demogroup' at the top of a partially empty list (this is where the names of various classes or groups within a class appear). Click on 'demogroup', then on OK.
A window will open showing the names of the children we've invented for this group. Click on the box to the left of one of them, then click on OK. The main MathsBook window will open showing the sort of 'sums' that the child you selected is being asked to do.
The level at which children work can be configured via the Options window which you can access by clicking menu (middle mouse button) over the MathsBook icon. For more information about changing options for individual children and whole groups, see the MathsBook manual, extracts from which are supplied as an (incomplete) text file on this disc.
If the fonts draw slowly on the screen, use the Task Manager to increase your font size in steps of 32k until you find a value that suits your setup.

The full RISC OS version of MathsBook X � costs �35 + VAT single user and �70 + VAT site licence.
If you already have the + - version, you can get the X � version at half price. Please provide proof of ownership at time of ordering.
Both versions include a comprehensive manual by award-winning author Marshal Anderson. Extracts are on this disc.
A PC Windows version is under development - ring for details.
