1  LICENCE AND DISCLAIMER
=========================
!FlexiCD is shareware. This means that you are allowed a 14 day trial period
to test !FlexiCD, and then if you wish to continue using it, you are obliged
to send me a registration fee of �8.50. On receipt of this fee, you will
receive a copy with it's own unique identification number, and which doesn't
display �UNREGISTED� in the title bar of the window. See the section at the
end of this file for details on registering.
The unregistered version of !FlexiCD may be copied and distributed by anyone
(individuals, PD libraries, PDCDs etc.) provided that only a reasonable cost
for distribution is made, and provided that all files are copied unaltered.
Any registered copies of !FlexiCD may only be copied between two private
individuals for trial purposes, subject to the above conditions, and
provided that the recipient is aware that they are still required to
register as stated above.

Note that the FlexiCDControl module is not subject to this licence. See the

2  INTRODUCTION
===============
I know what you're thinking: �Not another desktop CD player�. Well, apart
from the standard playing and track naming facilities, here are six main
reasons to use !FlexiCD as opposed to any other player:

!FlexiCD is the only CD player available for the Acorn (to the best of my
knowledge) which allows you to edit the times at which tracks start and end.
This can be very useful in many different situations:
� It allows you to edit out any long silences between songs.
� On some CDs (particularly live recordings), the start of tracks does not
correspond exactly to the start of the songs. You can therefore adjust the
timings accordingly.
� On some CDs, an extra song is provided at the end of the last track
(sometimes after a long silence). With !FlexiCD, you can split these tracks
up into two different tracks, losing the long silence, and allowing you to
play the extra track immediately.

When I started to write !FlexiCD, it was going to be the only one available
for the Acorn that opened the audio CD controller if you clicked on the
normal CDFS icon when there was an audio CD in the drive, rather than
putting an extra icon on the icon bar. (A couple of other programs are now
available with this feature).

!FlexiCD only requires 38K to run (once all the track names and other
similar details have been set up), making it the least memory hungry CD
player available for the Acorn that I know of.

!FlexiCD will continue to control CDs (even in programmed or shuffle play)
if you leave the desktop for any reason.

!FlexiCD will handle mixed data/audio CDs in a sensible way.

And, perhaps least importantly, !FlexiCD does not suffer from the 77 CD
limit that some other players do.






3  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
======================
!FlexiCD will run on any Archimedes or Risc PC that is fitted with RISC OS 3.
10 or later.
It has only been tested with CDFS 2.21, but should be OK with later
versions. I do not know if it will function correctly with earlier versions
of CDFS.
!FlexiCD does not require a hard disc to run, but as files containing
information about CDs are automatically loaded as CDs are put into the CD-
ROM drive, it will be very difficult to use if you do not have a hard disc.
!FlexiCD only supports CD-ROM drives 0 to 3, and any other drives will
continue to function normally when !FlexiCD is loaded.
Also note that !FlexiCD will not run from a read-only media, such as a CD-
ROM, or a read-only archive.






4  GETTING STARTED
==================
To load !FlexiCD, double click it's icon in a filer window as normal (or
alternatively add a line to load it in your boot sequence). Nothing will
appear to happen in the desktop, but you can check that FlexiCD has loaded
by looking at the list in the Task Manager's display (it will be at the
bottom of the �Module tasks� section).
Now place an audio CD in a CD-ROM drive between 0 and 3, and click on that
drive's icon on the icon bar. After a short delay, a window will appear in
the bottom left of the screen, just above the icon bar.

Ignoring most of the icons in this window for the moment, and just looking
at the bottom left of the window, you will see the standard controls that
you would expect with any CD player. From left to right, these are previous
track, rewind, play, stop, fast forward, next track, open and close.
Clicking on these will cause the appropriate action to occur; you might like
to try these if you want to listen to the CD. Note that clicking on play
will cause it to change to a pause button, allowing you to pause the CD if
you want to.

In the top right of the window, (above the words �Total elapsed�), a time
will be displayed if a CD is playing, and to the right of this is a small
pop-up menu icon. This menu allows you to change whether the time displayed
is the total time elapsed on the CD, the total time remaining on the CD, the
total time elapsed on the current track, or the total time left on the
current track.

In the top left of the window are three icons. One of these displays the
name of the CD (this will currently say �Untitled CD�, one displays the name
of the track currently playing (this will just be �Track 01�, �Track 02�
etc. at the moment), and a normal pop-up menu icon. Clicking on this icon
will bring up a list of all the tracks on the CD; choosing one from the menu
will cause play to jump to that track, providing an easy way to play any
particular track on a CD.

In the bottom right of the window is a group of four icons marked
�Programme�, �Shuffle�, �Rep� and �Edit�. Initially, we will only look at
Programme, Shuffle and Rep (these become shaded if a CD is playing - click
on the Stop icon to if you want to use them).
If the Rep button is selected, then the CD will repeat from the start when
the end of the disc is reached.
If the Programme button is selected, then the CD will play a pre-programmed
sequence of tracks, instead of playing all the tracks from start to finish.
(See section 6 for details of how to change this sequence). Initially, the
programmed sequence will actually just be all the tracks on the CD, and as
such you will not be able to tell the difference between this and playing
the CD normally. Note that programme can be used in conjuction with the
Repeat button. Note also that if you are displaying total time elapsed/
remaining, the time shown will refer to the length of the programmed
sequence, and not the whole CD.
If the Shuffle button is selected, then the CD will play all the tracks in a
random order until the Stop icon is clicked on. Note that the Repeat button
will be shaded if Shuffle is selected - repeating a shuffle play is not
possible. Note also that any times displayed will always refer to the
current track, regardless of whether the time displayed is total or track
time.


Finally, some general points to note:
� !FlexiCD can only be used to control CD-ROM drives 0 to 3.
� !FlexiCD will continue controlling the CD-ROM drive even if the main
window closed, and can therefore be used to control up to four audio CDs
simultaneously (although why you'd want to play four audio CDs together is
another question...)
� !FlexiCD will continue controlling the CD-ROM drive even if you leave the
desktop, although you obbviously have to be in the desktop to start CDs
playing.






5  NAMING CDs AND TRACKS
========================
If you click on the Edit button at the bottom right of the main window, a
further window will open which shows all the CDs that !FlexiCD knows about.
Initally, the CD currently in the drive will be selected, but you can select
(and alter the names of) any other CD simply by clicking over it.
Clicking on the �Track names� near the bottom right of this window allows
you to change the names of whichever CD you have selected.
The contents of the window will change to display the name of the CD and all
the track names in writable icons. Simply change the names accordingly, and
then click on the Save icon when you have finished (or Cancel if you do not
wish to update the changes you have made). This will cause the window to
display all the CD titles again.
When you have finished editing the names, click on the Close icon in the top
right of the window to leave the editor.






6  CHANGING THE PROGRAMMED TRACK SEQUENCE
=========================================
Open the editing window and select the appropriate CD as described in
section 5 above, and the click on the �Prog sequence� icon.
This will bring up a window with two lists - the top one shows the
programmed sequence, and the bottom shows any tracks which are not in the
seqneuce.
To alter a track's position in the sequence, simply click over it in the top
list, and drag it to the position you want in the list (which will
automatically scroll).
To move a track out of the programmed sequence, click over it in the top
list, and drag it to the list at the bottom of the window. Similarly, to
place any tracks back into the programmed sequence, drag the icon from the
bottom list to the required position in top list.
Once you have set up the programmed sequence as you want it, click on the
Save icon. (Note that if the previous programmed sequence was playing when
you do this, it will be stopped automatically to make sure you do not become
confused with the old and new programmed sequences).





7  CHANGING THE DEFAULT PLAY MODE
=================================
It is possible to configure whether each individual CD will initially be in
normal, programmed or shuffle mode when it placed into a CD-ROM drive.
To do this, open the editing window and select the appropriate CD (as
described in section 5), and then click on the �Miscellaneous� icon. This
will change the display to show the number of tracks and total playing time
at the top of the window, and a series of radio icons at the bottom. Simply
select the play mode you require, and then click on the Save icon.





8  CHANGING THE TIMES OF TRACKS
===============================
To do this, open the editing window and select the appropriate CD (as
described in section 5), and then click on the �Track names� icon. This will
open a window which displays a track name and a series of slider bars and
writable icons.

8.1 Changing track times
------------------------
First, select the track you require by clicking on the arrows either side of
the track name icon, or by choosing it from the pop-up menu to the right of
the track name.
The start and end times for that track will be shown in the writable icons
down the right hand side of the window, with times specified in minutes,
seconds and frames (where 75 frames make up 1 second, just like 60 seconds
make up 1 minute) from the start of the CD.
These times will also be represented graphically in the slider bars, with
the sliders corresponding to minutes representing the whole length of the
CD, and the sliders representing seconds and frames correspond to a
magnified version of the slider above.
To change a start or end time, you can either drag the appropriate slider,
or enter a value in the writable icon.
Obviously, adjusting the times like this is a little hit and miss, so by
clicking on the Test buttons at the left of the window, the first few (or
last few) seconds of a track will be played (assuming the appropriate CD is
in a CD-ROM drive), allowing you to check the times you have entered.
Although this process sounds complicated, it is a very powerful feature of
!FlexiCD, and I would suggest you try it out as it is probably to easier to
experiment with this particular window than to try and learn about what it
does by reading instructions. If you do mess up some track times, you can
always click Cancel instead of Save!
Note that clicking Save will cause the CD you have been editing to stop
automatically if it was playing to make sure that you do not become confused
between the old and new track times.

8.2 Adding new tracks
---------------------
This facility can be used if you want to split a track up into two different
tracks (for example, if the last track on the CD contains an extra track).
To do this, simply click on the pop-up menu icon to the right of the track
name icon, and go over the submenu �New track�. Then choose the track on
this menu that you wish to insert the new track before. You can then adjust
the times accordingly.

8.3 Deleting tracks
-------------------
This can obviously be used to get rid of any tracks you have added, or
simply to �get rid� of a track on a CD that you don't like!
Again, click on the pop-up menu icon to right of the track name, and go over
the submenu �Delete�. Then choose the track you wish to delete.

8.4 Checking track times
------------------------
On the album Stoosh by Skunk Anansie, an extra track is provided before the
first track. If you try and include this by adding a new track and defining
the times appropriately, you will find that an error message is given when
you try and play the track in !FlexiCD. This is because !FlexiCD checks all
the times you have entered to make sure they correspond with real audio
tracks on the CD, and in this case, they don't.
If you turn off the option icon marked �Check times before starting play� at
the bottom of the track times window, !FlexiCD will not check the times you
have entered for that particular CD, therrefore allowing this hidden track
to be played.
Although this feature has obvious advantages, it should be used with extreme
care as if you turn it off and then specify non-audio sections to play,
random errors from !FlexiCD and CDFS may well occur during playing of a CD,
possibly leading to loss of data in other applications which are running in
the desktop. As stated in section 1, I will accept no responsibility should
this happen.







9  MIXED DATA/AUDIO CDs
=======================
!FlexiCD is capable of playing the audio sections on mixed data/audio CDs
(referred to from here onwards as mixed CDs), unlike some other desktop CD
players.
When you have a mixed CD, clicking with select on the CDFS icon will bring
up the directory display as normal. However, clicking with adjust will open
the !FlexiCD window as for audio CDs. You can then treat the CD in the same
way as any other audio CD. Note however that only the audio tracks will
originally be listed in any menus or the editing program, and these will be
numbered in order from one upwards, regardless of which track number they
actually are on the CD.
Note that once a mixed CD is playing audio data, a click with select or
adjust on the CDFS icon will open !FlexiCD's window, rather than accessing
the data on the CD.
If the data on a mixed CD is accessed for some reason while the audio
sections are playing, play will resume from the track after the one
currently playing when the data access is finished.

10.2 Known bugs/limitations
---------------------------
!FlexiCD will very probably go horribly wrong if any other program tries to
control audio tracks on a CD at the same time. The solution is simple: quit
the other program :-)
If you find any other bugs, please write and let me know; my address is
given in section 12 at the end of this file. Try and include as many details
about your system as possible (e.g. type of machine, version of RISC OS,
version of CDFS etc).


10.3 Future improvements
------------------------
I'd like to make opening the editing window occur without the present large
delay, but other than that I can't really see any other way to improve
!FlexiCD.
If you have any suggestions, please write and let me know; my address is
given in section 12 at the end of this file. Note that suggestions are more
likely to be implemented if you are a registered user.







11  REGISTRATION DETAILS
========================
As stated in section 1, !FlexiCD is shareware. This means that you are
allowed 14 days to test !FlexiCD, and if you want to continue using it, you
need to send me a registration fee of �8.50.

Registering means that you will receive your own personal copy of !FlexiCD,
and you will be entitled to any future upgrades free of charge providing you
send me the original disc and return postage. Any bug reports or suggestions
for future improvements will be considered with more favour if you are a
registered user.

Payment can be accepted by cheques only, made payable to �Andrew Booker�,
and made out for �8.50 in sterling. Credit cards or foreign currency will
not be accepted. If there is absolutely no way that you can pay by this
method, an alternative is to send me 15 high quality high density blank
floppy discs. Please only send discs if you can not pay by cheque.
