This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

1. Introduction
===============
History
-------
The original reason for developing this program was to allow a much easier
way of customising the !Boot sequence of events. Why Acorn omitted to include
this as an option of the configuration I don't know. Editing files embedded
in the !Boot application  is nearly as bad as editing CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT files on the PC. At the same time as developing this program
some of the files in some directories become corrupt due to the lack of
knowledge on the part of my son and friends. Investigation of the existing
Acorn provided password protection showed it to be too restrictive for
normal use. Therefore, I decided to expand the program to include password
protection via user accounts.

The first version was driven almost entirely via menus and the removal of
files from !Boot via these menus was less than adequate. However, it was
fully functional.

This release has better organised menu structure and all editing is done
within windows. The editing of !Boot has also increased to include the
PreDesk directory and now handles all filetypes. The password mechanism
remains unchanged although user access can now be defined with respect to
day and time slots.

Components
----------
This application actually consists of four separate programs

    !Bootplus
    !zzzzpass
    !zzzzchk
    !Trap

!Bootplus is the main application which is used to set-up and manage the system.

!zzzzpass is a hidden background task that checks for user login and
monitors certain aspects of the system as defined by !Bootplus. If !zzzzchk
is not running then !zzzzpass starts it. !zzzzpass will also re-start
!zzzzchk if attempts are made to quit it. !zzzzchk monitors that !zzzzpass
is running and starts it if that is not the case.

!Trap(s) are very small applications that can be liberally spread around the
hard disk. They ensure that all aspects of the password protection
procedures are correctly defined and if not then they will force !zzzzpass
to "think" someone is hacking the system.

The system has been designed to behave as an on request password protection 
scheme rather than an on demand scheme. In this way an unwary user (hacker,
thief etc) will be unaware that a password is required to access the system.
However, the system will allow a limited time to enter the password during
which time the system is potentially open. As long as this time is kept
short it is unlikely that much harm will be done especially since any access
allowed by zzzzpass to an unknown user is extremely limited (none!).

Anyway, any determined hacker can still get round any system if they try
long  enough. The password system once activated ensures that it is always
activated !!  In other words any attempt to remove the password protection
will result in the protection system crashing the machine. The only way to
remove the protection system safely  is from within !Bootplus as the user
OWNER. Well almost. There is a back door available just in case the system
has been irretrievably hacked, this is listed in appendix A. This page
should be removed and kept secure.

2. Installation
===============
!Bootplus is installed by copying it from the distribution media to your 
required location. This is done by clicking on the !Bootplus icon and
dragging it from the distribution media to the required directory. The
application is then run as normal by double clicking it.

!Bootplus  can be stored in the Apps folder where it will automatically 
appear in the resources directory as part of the normal Riscos 3.5 !Boot
functionality. However, !Bootplus is not strictly an "application" that you
would use regularly more of a utility that you occasionally use. Therefore,
it is recommended that !Bootplus is stored in the Utilities directory and
you use !Bootplus to install itself in the Resources.$.Apps folder.

Installation of !zzzzpass , the background password and monitor program, is 
done via !Bootplus. Installation of !zzzzchk is done automatically when
required.

Installation of !Thieftrap(s) is also done via !Bootplus.

*** Please be aware that in the Resources directory is the master !Thieftrap 
application. If this directory is opened then this thieftrap will behave
normally by ensuring that !zzzzpass is running and installed. This could be
a problem if you have not read the manual on how to use !Bootplus yet since
your machine will crash if a user is not logged on in time...So curb your
curiosity for now.

3. Main Menu
============
This is the main menu displayed from the icon bar !Bootplus icon. The menu 
shown above has all the items available since the logged user is the system
owner. The Boot and Options items are not available for any other users. The
name of the current user is displayed in the menu title.

Info            Moving the pointer over the submenu arrow will pop-up the
                usual information box

Users Access    Moving the pointer over this submenu arrow will pop-up the
                Login options menu. This is fully described in chapter 4
                "Passwords".

Boot Actions    Moving the pointer over this submenu arrow will pop up the
                boot removal options menu. This is fully described in chapter
                6 "Boot Editing".

Maintenance     Moving the pointer over the submenu arrow on this item will
                display the maintenance menu as described in chapter 7
                "Maintenance".

Create an Alias Selecting this item will pop up a create alias window. This
                is fully described in chapter 9 "User Aliases"
4. Passwords
The password system employed by this application is intended to be as
obscure  as possible so that the unwanted user is unaware of the
requirement. There are two ways of logging on. The first is to click on the
!Bootplus icon with the select button. In this case !Bootplus will
immediately quit upon entry of a valid password. The second method, which
does not quit after a valid entry is via the pop-up menu from the !Bootplus
icon on the icon bar.

If no-one has logged on then only the Login option is available. Only the 
user "OWNER" will be allowed to access all items as shown above.  All other
users can only access the Login and Change Password items. All passwords are
double encoded into an ascii readable value, not that reading it is of any
help. The encoding is a many to one form so knowing the encoded form will
not help anyone identify the original password. It is double encoded so that
the single encoded version can be securely passed via system messages if
necessary, Although this is not done anywhere at present.

A common password entry window is used for all password related actions as 
shown below NB This is the appearance for a normal login.

Login
-----
When the user enters a password it is displayed in "*" characters. Pressing 
the OK button will register the entered username and password. Pressing the
Clear button will clear the username and password fields for re-entry. If an
invalid password is entered then an error message is displayed and the
current logged user remains unchanged (if there is one)

In this case the password entry window is labelled "Change of Password" and
the following field values are required:

Password       The current users current password.

New Password   The current users new password.

Verify         Verification of the new password.

Add New User
------------
Prior to adding a new user the system owner is asked to verify themselves. 
The password entry window with the label "System Owner verification" is
displayed and the user "OWNER" password is required. Once this has been
correctly entered then the password entry window with the label "New User
Details" is displayed. This requires the following values to be entered:


Username     The new user name.

New Password The password for the user.

Verify       Verification of the new users password.

Reset Users Password
--------------------
This action is identical to adding a new user except that the entered 
password is applied to an existing user. Thus the system manager does not
need to know a users password to modify it.

Edit User Access
----------------
Selecting this item will pop-up the user access window as described in 
chapter 5 "Edit User Access".

5. Edit User Access
===================
The top section of the window contains a pop-up menu of all the known users. 
Once a user has been selected their access details are shown in the rest of
the window.

The centre section shows the top level directories on the hard disc that the 
user has access to (or not as the case may be). A directory can be swapped
between the two lists by double clicking on it. Applications are also
listed, however, the !Boot application can only be moved for the user OWNER.
Once directory access has been granted then the user will be able to access
all subdirectories within it. This may not be very sophisticated but it does
force the Owner to keep things simple and therefore easier to manage.

The bottom section shows the time slots that the user is allowed access to 
the machine. If a day option is ticked then the user will have access
between the hours shown otherwise they will have no access on that
particular day. All hour slots are inclusive. Please note that there is
currently no roll over detection past midnight so all users irrespective of
access (except the OWNER) are logged off at midnight at the latest. At worst
it will be a slight inconvenience which will require a user to re-logon
again.

Please note if a user is logged off they can still save any work or use any 
loaded application. They will be prevented from accessing anything new.

Changes will only be applied when the Apply button is pressed.

6. Boot Editing
===============
The sections of !Boot that can be edited by !Bootplus are :

 1. Auto run files i.e. located in the Tasks directory.

 2. Auto Booted applications, listed in the PreDesktop file.

 3. Additional Resource applications listed in the Desktop file.

 4. Files located in the PreDesk directory.

The editing of all these options is done via a common window show below 
(for the Predesk directory).

7. Maintenance
==============
The maintenance options are accessed from the icon bar menu:

Clear Logfile
-------------
This will make a copy of the existing logfile "<bootplus$dir>.
Resources/Logfile" into "<bootplus$dir>.resources.oldlogfile". Then the
current logfile is cleared.

Display Log File
----------------
This will display the current log file in the default text editor.

Edit Owner Details
------------------
This will pop up a window showing the details of the owner of the machine. 
All details can be edited. These details are displayed in a window by the
background monitor task (zzzzpass) prior to a forced crash if it suspects
hacking.

Add a Thieftrap
---------------
Once this option is selected a window will pop up with a an icon that looks 
like a pair of handcuffs. The icon should be dragged to a directory where a
thieftrap is required. Thieftraps work by having an active !Boot file that
essentially behaves like a !Run file. The thieftrap procedure ensures that
zzzzpass is running. Thereafter zzzzpass will take care of hacking etc. A
thieftrap will also ensure that all other thieftraps known to Bootplus are
restored should some have been accidentally or purposely deleted.

Remove Thieftraps
-----------------
This will remove all known thieftraps from the hard disc. Take note that
this  is the only method of removing all thieftraps since the existence of
one thieftrap will restore all the others! Install Logins Selecting this
item will perform the following:

 1. Install !zzzzpass, the background monitor task, into the !Boot sequence
    for auto running.

 2. Install !BootPlus into the !Boot sequence for auto running.

The actual applications for running are not installed in !Boot but an alias 
is created instead. If the location of !BootPlus has changed then the logins
will have to be re-installed so that new aliases can be created to point to
the new location. Login's can be re-installed without removal of the
previous install since the previous install is over written with the new
one.

Remove Logins
-------------
This reverses the above Install Logins action.

Pause Logins
------------
This option quits both the !zzzzpass and !zzzzchk tasks without removing 
them from the !Boot sequence. This is the only safe way to quit both these
task once they are running. They will continually attempt to re-start each
other if either have been quit. Bootplus Options This option pops up a
window that allows the !Bootplus application to be tuned to you
requirements. This is fully described in chapter8 "Options".

Boot Configuration
------------------
This will pop-up the normal !Boot configuration window as if the !Boot 
application had been double clicked.

The scrolling list displays all the current files, the type of file and some 
additional details, described below. A new file/application is simply added
to the list by dragging and dropping the relevant icon. A entry is removed
by double clicking on it. All new entries are highlighted in green text and
changes will only be applied when the the Apply button is pressed. The
original list can be restored by pressing the re-scan button. In some
instances an original file may be missing or have moved and in this case the
entry will be highlighted in red.

There are some files that are recognised as being "standard" and are shown
in  grey. These cannot be removed by Bootplus.

Auto Run
--------
A file in the tasks directory is auto run as part of the machine !Boot 
sequence. All applications added to this list are done via an alias and are
labelled as such in the above list. It is possible to put an original
application in the Tasks directory (not by Bootplus) in which case this will
be labelled as an original application. This is not a recommended practice.
The additional information for all files is *Filer_Run since this is how
boot handles them.

Auto Booted
-----------
This only applies to applications and any attempt to drop other file types 
into the list will result in an error message being displayed. The list of
applications is stored in the PreDeskTop file.

NB Bootplus can only handle the editing of autobooted applications that have 
been set via Bootplus.

Resource Applications
---------------------
This only applies to applications and the same restrictions apply as for the 
Auto Booted applications described above.

NB Bootplus can only handle the editing of resource applications that have 
been set via Bootplus.

PreDesk Files
-------------
Files added to this directory are interpreted in different ways during boot 
up. The main use for files here is for set-up procedures, for example
defining your set of Wimp icons. The additional information shown for these
files describes how they are interpreted by the boot sequence.

8. Options
==========
This chapter describes the customising of !Bootplus to suit specific 
requirements. The Options window is shown below : Only the system owner can
modify options.

Timings
-------
There are three timing values that can be specified. The Pre Warning Time is 
the number of seconds allowed by the background monitor task before it pops
up a reminder that a password is required. NB it does not actually mention a
password but displays the obscure message "Who are you?". The Warning
Duration is the number of seconds that the "Who are you?" message is
displayed for.

The Post Warning Die Time is the number of seconds allowed after the warning
for a password to be entered. DO NOT make this too short since whenever the
background task starts and thinks it has detected hacking it immediately
displays the warning message. Therefore, the Post Warning Die Time is all
that is allowed for a post hack genuine login.

Monitor
-------
These options determine which activities the background password task 
monitors and stores in a log file. Only activities that are ticked are
logged. Attempted access by a user to a directory that they are not allowed
to use, is always logged.

Access
------
These options specify who and or how the system is used. If the Allow Guest 
Logins option is selected then users can logon on to the machine with the
username/ password of GUEST/GUEST. If the option Test Mode Logins is
selected then the background monitor program will not crash if a password
has not been provided. Instead, it will a display an error message box. This
option should be switched on during the setup phase.

The Full Owner Access option, when selected, allows the user OWNER full
access to all resources. With the option switched off the OWNER is treated,
by the background task, as any other user. This is really only of use to a
system owner who is accident prone ! Recommendations The logging of
directories accessed can become excessive so it is best to keep this option
switched off. It should only be switched on if an access problem is
suspected.

9. User Aliases
===============
When the User Alias item is selected from the icon bar menu the following 
window will be displayed.

When an application is dragged and dropped onto this window the icon will 
change to reflect the chosen application. The alias is created by dragging
and dropping the icon from the alias window to the required directory.

An alias consists of a !Run and a !Help file. The !Run file simply 
*Filer_Runs the original application. The !Help file contains the full file
specification of the original. The Alias will only display the correct icon
if the application has already been booted. It is unwise (!) to save an
alias in the same directory as the original application since this may
result in the alias overwriting the application. This will be fixed in a
future release.

Appendix A
==========
*** PLEASE REMOVE THIS APPENDIX AND STORE IN A SECURE LOCATION ***
There may be an occasion when it is necessary to remove the !zzzzpass and 
!zzzzchk background tasks plus all associated "traps", for instance when the
password file is corrupted. This is probably due to some hacker. The
instructions listed below will remove all traces of !Bootplus and
sub-programs. !Bootplus will then need re- installing as normal.

 1. Start the machine.

 2. As soon as the !Boot sequence as finished press F12 which takes you to
    the command line prompt.

 3. Enter the following command to remove the background tasks:
         Wipe <boot$tobetasks>.!zzzzpass R ~C

 4. Enter the following command to remove all "traps".
         Run <bootplus$dir>.resources.killriscpc

Don't worry, the file has this misleading name on purpose to make a hacker 
think twice. Hopefully they will delete it which will make their attempt to
remove all traps very difficult.

 5. Re-boot the machine.

 6. Restore the password file, in one of two ways. The easiest way, which
    removes all existing passwords, is to copy the password file from the
    original distribution which has a single user/password of OWNER/
    manager.

If, however, you wish to preserve the existing user base then the OWNER
password must be changed back to the default of "manager" using a text
editor. The encoded form of the password "manager" is ";���� ". The hex
character codes are : 3B E2 E0 A6 D9 E6 20. Take care to ensure that there
is a tab between the OWNER name and the password and a tab after the
password. The extra x's are simply visible padding which is ignored but
needed!  The password filename is : <Bootplus$dir>.Resources.password

The Only Known "Hole"
=====================
It is possible to use Alt-Break to terminate any task and for this system 
both zzzzpass and zzzzchk would have to be terminated. There is a time limit
between the terminating of either program before they restart each other and
it is possible to alt-break quickly enough to terminate them both. This will
be fixed, if possible, in a future release. The system is intended to be as
benign as possible therefore any sneaky trapping etc will be avoided at all
costs which may preclude a fix. Unknown to the hacker is that three tasks
have to be quit, zzzzpass, zzzzchk and unknown. Where unknown is either
zzzzpass or zzzzchk re-starting.

Appendix B - Future Developments
================================
Future planned developments are listed here. If anyone has suggestions for 
additional features or modifications feel free to let the author know.
