I see from the last issue of EUG that my number is just about up, so I
enclose 10 to cover the next 12-months subs.
In that same issue I notice quite a few references to up-grading to an IBM
compatible PC and requests for thoughts and opinions on the matter. As
I have up-graded from the ELECTRON during the lifetime of EUG, I enclose
my two-pennyworth for members consideration.
Not being one to rush out and buy the N-Reg, Mark I of anything I believe
I left it too long in making the move from the Elk and thus finding the
transition too much of a gap to bridge in technical terms, although the
operating experience proved quite refreshing and pleasing. The period of
indicision did give me many hours of contemplating the route I should take
and the machine I should upgrade to and it finally came down to the PC or
the Archimedes.
I notice throughout the last issue of EUG that not one of the references
to upgrading mentioned the Arch or Risc PC, which is suprising for an
Acorn orientated club! Like a lot of members - it's PC at work and Acorn
at home and sometimes PCs at home as well for other members of the family.
That is the present situation in the Williams' household with the latest
inventory showing a couple of Elks, two Beebs, one A3010, one 386 and an
Amstrad NC100 laptop.
I think it is pointless trying to convince or sway people in their choice
of computer as everyone has different ideas, values, needs, resources,
prejudices and aspirations in this field, as in life. I have, at different
times, advised people to buy PCs as well as Acorns it all depended on
their personal circumstances. When I upgraded through the Acorn path the
relative costs were about the same, the technical merits open to debate,
but the operating systems had only one winner by a couple of miles. The
prices of PCs have fallen dramatically over the last five years with Mags
now advertising basic Pentiums for less than 1000, you can still argue
over the technicalities, but the operating systems, including Windows 95,
still has only one winner. As the Times article pointed out at the launch
of Windows 95 "What is all the fuss about, there has been better systems
on other platforms for years, one not a million miles from Cambridge."
All I can say is that I am glad I stayed with the Acorn world, although I
know thousands of previous Acorn enthusiasts have migrated to the PC.
Schools and colleges are now totally PC dominated, especially the
secondary sector. Acorn itself has recently gone through a shake-up after
a bad trading year. Intel/Microsoft is inside just about everything.
There are thousands upon thousands of software titles and library shelves
are full of PC type books. Non computer magazines and newspapers, radio
and television all ignore, or are not aware that Acorn exists, in their
various articles and programmes. Hardware peripherals and add-ons for PCs
tend to be very much cheaper with many more outlets available. High-end
PC software is generally more advanced and sophisticated, being produced
by vast software organisations and not the family concerns of the Acorn
world. Some firms that have always supported the Acorn market have
deserted to the PC, or now have a PC section. Computer Concepts now admit
that 90% of their developement work is targeted at the PC market. During
1995 quite a few major players in the Acorn field have disappeared. And
yet......
All is not gloom and doom for Acorn. Their ARM chip marches on from one
success to another, from one license to another, from one partnership to
another, from 600 through 700 to 800. Firms like IBM, Apple, DEC, VLSI,
Samsung, Goldstar and Hyundai are beating a path to Acorn's door. The
last three being the first, second and third biggest corporations in
Korea. On Line Media, Symbios Logic and Oracle are basing their future
designs for Set Top Boxes, PDAs, Communications, High End Consumer
Electronics, Multimedia/Internet Products and Credit Cards on the Arm
cores. Strong-Arm, Thumb,TAOS and CHRP (Common Hardware Reference
Platform) are now part and parcel of the Acorn scene, with the ARM700 data
bus already 10 times faster than the MAC defined CHRP standard.
So what about Acorn computers...the term Archimedes is no longer in
vogue,the 300 and 400 series having been superceded by the 30x0, 4000 and
5000 series a few years ago and laterly by the acclaimed Arm 600 RISC PC,
recently updated with Arm 700 chips and faster PC cards. Pentium cards are
now in the pipeline with the ASIC interfacing chip problems having been
sorted out, so that the "open architecture" policy is beginning to reap
its reward. Running MS windows in a Risc-OS environment has brought home
the difference in the memory requirements between the two, where 4MBs in
the Acorn world is still considered a lot.
The software scene remains the same as ever, with the WINTEL bandwagon
rolling remorselessly on, although there are a few Acorn peaks to be
found. The obvious one that comes to mind is SEBELIUS, which caused the
Royal College of Music to throw out all its PCs and install Acorns. The
education market is strongly supported and, at primary level, still
superior. On the general front you won't find high street stores stocked
to the roof with Acorn titles, but the Acorn mail order market is well
supported with more than adequate choice. Word procesors, spreadsheets,
databases and vector/bit mapped drawing packages have a fair spread, as
have music and games titles, but obviously not to the extent of the PC
world. CD Roms are blossoming with new titles appearing all the time and
access to PC types is opening up.
