Have you ever tried to find that elusive file that is somewhere in your
collection of discs? If you have, you will know how time consuming and
frustrating this can be!
This application allows you to create a simple index of all your floppy
discs. You can then search the index for a given keyword, a useful facility
if you have a large collection of floppies.
Each disc described in the index has a single record associated with it,
structured as follows:
Disc Title / Identifier + Up to 5 lines of disc 'Information'
The title can be either the actual name of the disc, or a single string
typed in by the user.
The disc 'Information' consists of 5 strings which can either be the
catalogue of the root directory of the disc, or up to 5 lines of text
entered by the user.
The disc catalogue and title can be loaded automatically by the program (see
below).
Loading and Running the Application
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The application is loaded in the normal way, by clicking on its icon in a
directory viewer. It will install itself on the icon bar when loaded.
To run the application, click select on its icon. This will open two
windows. The first is titled 'Disc Index' and this is where the disc titles
are displayed. The second is 'Control', with tape recorder-like features.
The Disc Index Window
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This window contains the disc titles described above. The titles are entered
into the large white icons, with the numbers in the left hand boxes
representing the disc numbers. (You should number each disc to be
used on the system by writing a number on its disc label.)
The disc Index window also allows you to enter the disc 'Information'. This
is entered into a separate window obtained by clicking on the disc NUMBER in
the Disc Index window. Clicking on one of the numbers opens a window titled
'Extra Information'. Clicking in the white area brings up a 'Caret' allowing
you to type in text. To store the text in the index you MUST click on OK.
If you close the 'Extra Information' window without clicking on OK then
any changes will not be saved into the index.
Automatic Disc Catalogue
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Disc Manager can be made to read the title and catalogue of a disc and store
it in the relevent places of a disc record. The catalogue read is the ROOT
directory (as most applications etc are in this directory, and so the extra
directories are not needed for a simple index) and the title is the disc
title set with the *TITLE command.
To load the catalogue and title automatically, put the relevent disc in the
drive and open the 'Disc Index' window. Next click on the disc number of the
disc to be catalogued. This displays the 'Extra Information' window for this
disc. You can then either press the middle mouse button and select
'Examine', or you can click on the 'Examine' icon. In either case, the disc
catalogue will be loaded. To register the change you must click on 'OK' as
mentioned above.
Moving Around The Index
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 'Disc Index' window can't display the whole index at a time and so
displays it in 10 disc sections. To move the display on one section, click
on the single arrow pointing to the right in the 'Control' window. To move
back one section click on the single arrow pointing to the left. The other
two arrows move to the extreme positions in the directions indicated.
It is also possible to 'Goto' a Disc number using a goto function. To 'Goto'
a disc, press the middle button on the mouse and open the 'Goto' submenu.
Then enter the disc number in the white icon and press return. The 'Disc
Index' will be updated.
Searching For A KeyWord
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To search the index, open the menu by pressing the middle mouse button and
then select the 'Search' submenu. Enter the Keyword to be searched for in
the white icon, select the part of the record to be searched ('Extra' is the
Disc Information and 'Title' is the Disc Title) and press return. A window
will open displaying the search critera at the top and the numbers of any
discs that fit the criterea underneath.
Clearing A Disc Entry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To clear a disc entry, move the pointer over either the title of the disc in
the 'Disc Index' window or the disc's 'Extra Information' window, and open
the menu. Next select Clear Rec (Clear Record).
Saving And Loading an Index
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To save the index use the standard RISC OS save box method. To load an
index, drag the saved index file onto the Disc Manager icon.
Printing the Index
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To print the index, open the menu by pressing the middle mouse button and
open the 'Print' window. Enter the Start and Finish Disc Numbers and then
click on Print.
Customisation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The main point to note is that at present the system will not allow more
than 300 discs to be in the index. To change this, change the variable
'DiscLimit' in the procedure 'Init_New_Vars'. More space may have to be
allocated to the task by changing the !Run File (see !Run For Information)
