VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/COMMUN

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

CE DISTANCE FROM COMMUNICATIONS

In this section I aim to find out what difference to land
use the distance from communications is. Communications are the
major methods of travelling around. In Chipstead they are the main
roads and the railway. I would think that the number of houses
would increase the nearer you get to these comunications.

By looking at the map of land use it can easily be seen
that the majority of housing occurs in the north of the parish.
This is also where the railway station is, and the start of the
main roads which lead into Coulsdon, Purley and Banstead. It seems
to me that housing and shops are concentrated around the
communications and thin out as they get further away. After the
housing, fields and woodland occur in the rest of the parish. There
are some other houses but these are either old ones left standing
or farm buildings which are necessary on the farms.

It should also be noted that the houses can't really spread
any further away from the communications because the Green Belt
starts there. I think what we see in Chipstaad is the edge of the
housing growth from the major settlements and lines of
communication. Chipstead really contains both types of land use -
housing and farmland/woodland - because of the Green Belt. Without
it I believe the parish could easily have been almost completely
consumed with houses spreading out from Coulsdon and Purley,
along the main roads and railways. As it is the Green Belt stops
this development, but I still feel that Chipstead shows how
communications can affect land use.
