UG2

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

  110PRINT
120PRINT"Q - WHAT WAS THE FIRST COMPUTER YOU EVER OWNED?"
130PRINT"A - That was a Sinclair ZX81. I've still got it.... I've got two actually!"
  140PRINT
150PRINT"Q - THEN YOU WENT ON TO THE ELECTRON?"
  160PRINT"A - Yes."
  170PRINT
180PRINT"Q - HOW LONG DID YOU HAVE THAT FOR?"
190PRINT"A - I've still got it. We used it when the children were young, they"
200PRINT"messed about on it, then it was put away and I'd only get it out now and"
210PRINT"then. It's only in the last three years that I really started to use it. "
  220PRINT
230PRINT"Q - WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO UPGRADE TO THE MASTER COMPACT?"
  240PRINT"A - Well, first of all I had a standard Electron, then I added a PLUS-1 so"
250PRINT"I could use VIEW and VIEWSHEET, but it was tedious loading and saving"
260PRINT"files to tape, so I bought a PLUS-3. But there were still a lot of"
270PRINT"restrictions, there were things you couldn't do that were possible on"
280PRINT"other machines. I wanted to use software like AMX Pagemaker, but when I"
290PRINT"weighed up the cost of the upgrades needed it seemed too expensive, it"
300PRINT"just wasn't worth paying out that sort of money. I had been looking around"
310PRINT"for a second hand colour monitor and I saw an advert in the newspaper for"
320PRINT"a BBC Master Compact, a really good printer, AND a colour monitor as one"
330PRINT"package, all for #125. It seemed the best option."
  340PRINT
350PRINT"Q - WHAT KIND OF SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE?"
360PRINT"A - That is one of the drawbacks. The Software is there, but it's mostly"
370PRINT"on 5.25"" DFS disks. The Master Compact comes with an internal 3.5"" ADFS"
380PRINT"system as standard. The DFS is no problem as you can load it into sideways"
390PRINT"RAM from disc, but you really need a 5.25"" drive."
  400PRINT
410PRINT"Q - ARE YOU PLANNING TO FIT ONE?"
420PRINT"A - I would do if I saw one at a reasonable price."
  430PRINT
  440PRINT"Q - IS IT A SIMPLE JOB?"
450PRINT"A - Oh yes! All you do is buy a lead from Watford Electronics and clip it"
460PRINT"on to the existing internal drive cable. It's just a loop that runs"
470PRINT"outside the casing to the second external drive."
  480PRINT
490PRINT"Q - DO YOU STILL USE YOUR ELECTRON SOFTWARE?"
500PRINT"A - Not a lot. I've loaded in bits and pieces, but sometimes I just got"
510PRINT"rubbish up on the screen. A lot will run, anything in BASIC of course, but"
520PRINT"most commercial stuff - like games - runs too fast on the Compact."
  530PRINT
540PRINT"Q - ARE YOU STILL USING VIEW AND VIEWSHEET?"
550PRINT"A - No, no, I've upgraded! I've got rid of that rubbish! (LAUGHS)."
  560PRINT
570PRINT"Q - WHAT ARE YOU USING NOW?"
580PRINT"A - Computer Concepts' Interword and Intersheet, it's all ROM-based, and"
590PRINT"the Compact comes with an internal ROM board as standard. Being menu"
600PRINT"driven, the software is very easy to use. I've also got the Computer"
610PRINT"Concepts Spell Check ROM and it's lovely! You just have to press a few"
620PRINT"keys and it does everything automatically. It will work while you're"
630PRINT"actually typing. If you mis-spell a word it beeps at you - but I don't use"
640PRINT"it like that, I make too many spelling mistakes and it interrupts me too"
650PRINT"often! You've really got to use it to see how good it is."
  660PRINT
670PRINT"Q - WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT HAVE YOU FOUND FOR THE MASTER COMPACT?"
680PRINT"A - Well, there's SOLINET, but for obvious reasons they only like to"
690PRINT"supply 5.25"" DFS discs. ""8-BIT SOFTWARE"" seem to be very good, although"
700PRINT"most of their stuff is for the BBC-B and not specifically for the Master"
  710PRINT"Compact, but that doesn't matter."
  720PRINT
730PRINT"Q - HAVE YOU MADE CONTACT WITH OTHER MASTER COMPACT OWNERS?"
740PRINT"A - Yes! They keep ringing me up! (LAUGHS)."
  750PRINT
  760PRINT"Q - SO YOU'VE GOT A BIT OF A NETWORK GOING?"
770PRINT"A - Yes, but I don't know how it started. You know what it's like, if some"
780PRINT"one has got the same machine as you, it's a lot easier to get information"
790PRINT"and sort out problems with people who know what you're talking about. Now"
800PRINT"I get people phoning me saying, ""You don't know me but...""."
  810PRINT
820PRINT"Q - SO YOUR PHONE NUMBER IS JUST BEING PASSED AROUND ALL OVER THE PLACE?"
  830PRINT"A - Not really! It's a two-way thing. I help people out when I can and"
840PRINT"they do the same for me."
  850PRINT
860PRINT"Q - DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE ANOTHER UPGRADE IN THE FUTURE, AND IF SO, WHAT TO?"
870PRINT"A - Well, I've had a look at the newer Acorn Archimedes machines and to be"
880PRINT"honest, they seem so complicated and serious. It's not ""Leisure and"
890PRINT"Pleasure"" if you see what I mean - and they're so expensive! But I know it"
900PRINT"all depends on how far you want to go into things. I've got a contact with"
910PRINT"an Archimedes and he sends me print-outs, beautiful stuff, fine colour"
920PRINT"graphics. Obviously, the more money you pay for your equipment the better"
930PRINT"the quality, but things also become more complicated. I suppose if I were"
940PRINT"twenty five again my brain might be able to take in a bit more, but as I"
