Word-Ex, the Wordwise users expansiom ROM, is a 16K machine code ROM which
expands the power and flexibility of Wordwise and Wordwise Plus.
The new facilities that Word-Ex provides are accessed through a linked
menu system which is simple and easy to use in practice. These menus can
be called up either from the edit mode or, as with the help menu, from the
Wordwise menu mode, although the manual is not too clear on this point.
Facilities available are:
FILE ACCESS. Word-Ex makes the process of loading and saving files much
easier, using an on-screen catalogue through which you can move using the
cursor keys, selecting your choice by pressing return. It remembers the
previous file name and allows simple key pressing to both display the
catalogue of the current drive and to delete files.
FUNCTION KEYS: The function keys can be programmed via the menu system
and stored on disc for reloading when required. The definitions can be
called up by pressing <ctrl/shift/function key>. This can be a very
powerful means of editing and manipulating text especially with Wordwise
where you don't have the advantage of segment programming.
SORTING: Sorting is extremely fast since it is done in machine code. A
sort that would take "Wordwise Plus" 9 minutes can be sorted in as many
seconds. Sorting can be alphabetic, numeric. in ascending or descending
order, on the whole text or any marked section.

LABEL PRINTING: Word-Ex has a very flexible label printing facility
which can:
adjust the label format to suit your printer; check the layout of the
addresses;
count the labels; and
allow comment lines to be appended to each address (such lines will not
be printed out).
CASE CHANGING: A set of case changing facilities is provided which works
on either the whole text or a marked section. Words can be changed such
that they are either:
a) all in upper case
b) all in lower case
c) all set as titles, or
d) "intelligently" case changed.
EDITING FACILITIES: Extra keyboard commands are provided for a fast word
search, character and word inversion, delete line and delete at cursor
position. These facilities can be accessed using simple single key
strokes.
MISCELLANEOUS FACILITIES: These include segment switching if you are
using Wordwise Plus (again using single key strokes), and a ` sign change
which changes the default value sent to the printer. Word-Ex can also be
accessed through star commands which can be used for Word-Ex applications
programmes. Thus, if you are using Wordwise Plus you can write a programme
to load each of a set of files in turn, sort it, remove duplicates and
save it back to disc.
SUMMARY: Word-Ex is a very useful addition to Wordwise or Wordwise Plus
and offers most of the features of Inter-Word, apart from WYSIWYG (What
You See Is What You Get), and continuous processing. It goes beyond
Inter-Word by providing high speed sorting, label printing, case changing,
alphabetic file access and function key programming. Users of Wordwise or
Wordwise Plus word-processors (those that do the typing) will find this a
powerful addition to their word processor. It seems an unfortunate
tradition that good software such a this comes complete with a manual that
is difficult to follow, does not give any examples and is too brief.
