bio1
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

F07 BIOLOGY 1 1 LIFE What is special about living organisms? They do all of these: Take in materials: FEED RESPOND to changes Increase in size: GROW Remove wastes: EXCRETE Use energy: RESPIRE Change position: MOVE Produce new organisms: REPRODUCE CONTROL their internal conditions. In simple organisms, the whole 'Body' does all of these. # 2 LIFE Higher organisms have a variety of specialised CELLS e.g. Blood, Sperm; TISSUES e.g. Muscle, Bone; ORGANS e.g. Stomach, Kidney. # 3 CELLS Apart from the non-cellular viruses and the simple bacteria, all organisms are made of CELLS. All cells have MEMBRANE (M), NUCLEUS (N), CYTOPLASM (C). Plant cells also have VACUOLES (V), CELL WALL (W). o M N C M MEMBRANE: Fat protein 'sandwich'; lets pass water and gases, but SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE to other substances. Continues through the cell as ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM - vast surface area for transport of materials in/out of cell. p 0 N NUCLEUS: Storage of information (coded in GENES on CHROMOSOMES) to control cell function and cell division. CELL WALL: Made of CELLULOSE: Supports and protects the cell. VACUOLE: Fluid-filled 'space'. p 0 C CYTOPLASM: contains various organelles: RIBOSOMES: Make proteins from amino-acids as (gene) code. MITOCHONDRIA: release energy from food (as A.T.P.) CHLOROPLASTS (plants) capture light energy. p 1 # 4 CELL DIVISION There are two types of cell division: MITOSIS and MEIOSIS. o A B C D E F A MITOSISMEIOSIS Number of divisions: 1 2 Number of cells produced: 2 4 Chromosomes (cf. parent): Same Half Cells identical? Yes No Occurs in forming: All Gametes cells only B MITOSIS 1) Chromosomes appear replicated. 2) Spindle forms. p 2 C MITOSIS (continued) 3) Chromosomes line up on spindle and separate. 4) New identical nuclei are formed. p 3 D MEIOSIS 1) Chromosomes pair. 2) Replication. p 4 E MEIOSIS (continued) 3) Spindle forms. Chromosomes line up on spindle and separate. 4) First division. p 5 F MEIOSIS (concluded) 5) New spindles form for second separation of chromosomes. 6) Second division produces 4 gametes. p 6 # T #1 1 (a) The release of energy from food is known as .....?
