Summary:
This application is intended to make using the Desktop more efficient. As such
you may have already seen some similar ideas in other operating systems on other
hardware platforms. My main inspiration for this program was the START menu
on the Windows95 task bar. From a programmer's perspective there are a lot of
very useful features in Microsoft programs and I think Bill Gates has done
well to get where he is. But why then has he built such a dreadful monstrosity
that he calls his 'mansion'? It's not much more than a thousand prefab school
huts all cobbled together with sellotape.
Features:
* Shortcut menu :-
Access files/directorys/applications from one place on the iconbar [MENU]
* Link cacheing into shortcut menu on double clicking in any filer window
* Filer Window Cache :-
Use mouse pointer positioning on hard left/right of desktop to open/close a
predefined set of filer windows ("filer cache"). [Move pointer to hard left
for 1 second to open]
* Auto Desktop window reorganisation
* Quickly perform an HOURGLASS_SMASH and a *CLOSE (close all files) for when your
own user programs go wrong. [SHIFT+MENU -> NoHourGlass]
Notes:
It should be copied onto your harddisc before you attempt to use it and also you
should have RISCOS set up to use some ADFS file buffers, as it makes
several disc accesses each time you click menu on the iconbar icon.
It initialises itself as a RiscOS 2.00 task so should work back to RO2.00.
However, I can only test it on a RO3.11 system.

* Boot up *

On startup of the 'start' application, it will try and boot all the items in
it's short cuts menus. This may take some time, but it means all the neccessary
icons are loaded before trying to display them in the link menus. If the links
menus are large, and they all point to the wrong places - then I'm afraid you
will have lots of errors to step through on startup. This may happen if you
decide to change the names of your discs on which the links point to.

Desktop Window Reorganisation
-----------------------------
!Start will automatically reposition any windows on the desktop in a cascaded
fashion so that they are easier to access. The front most window is never
repositioned, as are windows that have been toggled full size.

Icon Bar
--------
Moving the pointer down to the bottom of the screen causes the iconbar to be
toggled to the front/back so that it can be accessed in the event of it being
obscured by windows.

* ShortCuts Menu *

Pressing Menu over the icon reveals a menu of Shortcuts to
programs/directories/files that can be accessed as if they were in a filer
window.
Currently it can only handle a maximum of 32 nested menus of
shortcuts and about 200 actual links within any one string of menus. I suspect
that booting much more applications would probably strain RISCOSs sprite
pools and system variables anyway. So don't do it.

Most recently used objects
--------------------------
Several special directorys exist that will be automatically recreated if you
delete them. They store upto 8 of the most recently accessed file system
objects. These special directorys appear below the dotted line in the shortcut
root menu.

Adding Shortcuts
----------------
New links can be added simply by dragging the file icon onto start iconbar icon.
The links menu will now open up but with everything greyed out. Simply drop your
icon onto any item within the menu you wish the new link to appear in.

Removing Shortcuts
------------------
Bring up the shortcuts menu by clicking menu over the icon bar icon and move
to the required item to remove. Hold down Alt and click. The item will go grey.
When you next open the menu, that item will have been removed.

* Filer Window Cache *
***********************************************
This is a system to quickly access a useful set of filer viewers quickly
by using purely mouse movements to open/close them. To open them, hold the
pointer to the far left of the screen. To close them move the pointer to
the right hand side of the screen and they go straight away.

Adding to the window cache
--------------------------
To add new filer windows that are already open on the desktop to the
window cache, Ctrl+Alt+Left(Select) Drag from the icon bar icon to the open
filer window you wish to add to the window cache.

Removing from the window cache

Same as adding but use Ctrl+Alt+Right(Adjust).

Pressing Shift and Menu over the icon reveals a different menu from which
several things can be done...
* Edit Links enables a more flexible approach to altering the link menus.
* Clean enables it's internal filer open/close cache to be cleared out.
This cache can be added to and removed from by shift dragging from the iconbar
with select or adjust to an add/remove filer window. Select=Add Adjust=Remove
This cache can then be opened by swooshing the mouse to the left of the screen
for one second and closed by momentarilty swooshing to the right.
* NoHourGlassHour releases any erronious hourglasses left open and also does a
*CLOSE to release any erroniously left open files.
* Quit ... well I hope you won't want to use this, but I agree the program does
rather slow the desktop down a bit on a 25MHz ARM3. You could always try
running the !runimage through a BasCompress program....

* Known problems *

If there is no sm!xxxx for the xxxx icon then no icon will be displayed for
an object of type xxxx. The reason for this is that I don't know how to
check for the existence of a certain sprite in the system sprite pool. Anyone
care to give me an online RO3.00 set of manuals? Pull your finger out Acorn,
take a leaf out of Silicon Graphics books - give those online programmers
manuals away.
The icon used for links to DOS partitions is wrong. On my machine I get the
printer driver icon. My answer to this, as always, is ... ALIENS!!! I suspect
some funny naming scheme is in use for device icons, which is different to
the scheme for file/directory icons.
The Window reorganisation feature can get irritating sometimes, and the only
solutions are ...
a) close all windows other than the one are trying to get open fully.
b) quit !start
Organisation of directories in the shortcut menus is still a pain.
File handling is SLOW and there is lots of room for improvement here in the
form of spreading the file accesses across free WIMP polls.
