This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Archimedes World Cover Disk
January 93
We select only the best software for publication to make sure you have
genuinely useful programs. Please read about the programs in the
magazine to understand how to use them fully.
All the programs on this disk, unless otherwise stated, are copyright
Argus Specialist Publications, 1993. They may not be copied or resold
except for the purposes of making a back-up copy. They should NOT be
distributed as Public Domain.
Purchase of Archimedes World by a school or college
is inclusive of a site licence for the software.
Keep It Safe
Before doing anything else, you should make a backup of this disk. Use
only the backup so that if anything goes wrong, such as accidentally
deleting a file, you can just make another backup from the original.
Archived
The !AWJan93 application contains all the software, which is stored in
the 'Goodies' directory. To get as much data on the disk as possible
it is archived using David Pilling's !ArcFS application. The
'!AWJan93' application, when de-archived, will not fit on a single
floppy disk. You can copy it to a hard disk and it will run perfectly
well from there.
Running
To enable you to run the software from the archive we include a copy
of read only version !ArcFS. This application allows loading of
archived software as if it were stored in the usual way. The only
difference you will experience is slower loading. This is a small
price to pay for almost twice as much software on disk. !ArcFS is a
public domain utility and can be freely copied subject to the
conditions stated in the !Help text file inside the application
directory.
Copying Software
When the !AWJan93 application icon is dragged from the archive window
to another disk it is de-archived as it is copied. To run the software
uncompressed from the RAM disk it will need to be set to at least
1700k. If you have 2Mb or more of RAM then you can create an 800K RAM
disk and copy the !AWJan93 archive to there. This greatly speeds up
the loading of software from the archive.
You can copy individual programs from the cover disk if you
choose. To do this click with the left (Select) mouse button on the
Open Viewer option. This will open a standard filer window which you
can drag the items from in the standard way. The files will be de-
archived as they are copied. They can then be loaded without using the
Waiter disk menu or !ArcFS.
If you have any difficulties running software from the archive
then it is best to copy the programs to another disk and try running
them from there.
Documentation
All the programs on the disk are fully documented in Archimedes World.
Any additional documentation may be found in the relevant directories
on this disk. Text files can be displayed from the menu using our
built-in text display module. The text display menu allows you to
print a hard copy. Make sure that your printer is on line and ready to
print.
Using the Menu
The disk menu makes it easy for you to run the programs and read any
instructions. Some items on the main menu lead to a sub-menu while
others run applications or display text.
To select a menu item click the Select button once over its
icon. When an item is selected, the menu disappears from the desktop.
To get the menu back, click on the Waiter icon on the icon bar. The
menu will appear exactly as you left it.
To run a program, simply click once on the icon. There may be
instructions on using the program which can be viewed on screen.
Please be sure to read the instructions before you run the programs.
The last item on each sub-menu is the 'Previous menu' option
which takes you back to the previous menu.
Programs
Impact
Impact is a new database from Circle Software. Impact has been
designed to be simple to use and is the first commercial program to
use the Impulse module to import data directly into Impression II from
Computer Concepts.
The database can be used in its cut down form on this months
cover disk, but once you have registered it becomes a full working
version. The cost of registration is �49.95.
Warning:
As the program has a save feature, it is advisable that you copy the
program to a newly formatted disk. The version of ArcFS on the cover
disk only allows reading of disks, and does not allow saving in any
form.
Please make sure you have a copy of the !System application
on the disk as well before running the program.

Miles Per Gallon
The MPG program is a utility written using the WIMP Procedure library
from Joe Taylor's WIMP programming series.
MPG simply converts miles into gallons of fuel used on a
certain journey. The program itself is very simple, but the main
factor here is that the program was written from our Wimp Series, and
the author had no prior knowledge of programming the WIMP. More proof
that Archimedes World is helping Acorn RISC OS users everywhere.
PRMindex
This utility is very if you hate looking through the Programmers
Reference Manauals (PRMs) for that certain bit of information. Not
only does this program tell you about SWI calls it also informs you
what page its on. Now, looking through the PRM'S should be no trouble!
Calendar
Ever wanted a calendar to hang on your wall or put in your Filofax?
This simple, yet effective, program allows you to print calendars on
A4 paper.
To print a full page calendar, select 14 point text. If you
require the calendar to fit into one of those personal organisers,
then you should use 6 point.
Please Note:
Before running the program you will be required to load a printer
driver. You will notice if you try to run the program an error box
will appear with this information.
Fix Module Virus
This is a must for any collection. It's a virus killer which allows
you to scan any disk for the annoying module virus.
The module virus was set to show up on the 6 September. It
appended its code to all modules in the computer and not just those in
the !System application directory. Although it is essentially
harmless, it has been the cause of great annoyance for many people.
Most will have removed it by now, but if you are still suffering,
Archimedes World has the cure.
Please remember to always keep a copy installed on your hard
disk if you have one. If not, keep a copy stored on a floppy somewhere
safe, and always check all disks that are given to you, even from a
friend.
Viruses can come from the most unbelievable of sources, it is
better to be safe than sorry. Archimedes World takes the threat of
viruses very seriously and all possible steps are taken to ensure that
our cover disks are completely virus free.
Year Planner
This is a draw file of a year planner for the year of Our Lord 1993.
Very handy for noting those ritual sacrifices, like the time when you
caught the author of the Module Virus!
But seriously, just load it into Draw or another program which
allows the importation of Draw files and you can print out. If you
have Vector or Artworks, you can enlarge it and print it out over a
number of sheets of A4 to create a poster.
Tracker Tunes
This month we proivide you with a few Tracker files for you to load
and listen to using last months WimpTracker application.
Simply load WIMPTracker and drag the Tracker file of your
choice into it's icon. Select Play and just sit back and listen, or
maybe convert the tune to your own taste.
Pandora's Box Maps
Pandora's Box was one of the most popular games from the 4th Dimension
this year. As part of the complete solution to the game, we have
supplied a number of maps (in Draw format) on this disk. The complete
solution, including these maps can also be found in the January 1993
issue of the magaine.
Noot
4 Mation and Archimedes World brings you a Christmas Greeting and demo
of Noot in one application. Noot is an animation package which has
some very nice features, and, being from 4 Mation is very user
friendly.
Warning
As the program requires a lot of memory, it would be advisable to copy
it to a newly formatted disk. Please also note this application
requires to have the !System application on the disk as well, so
please make sure you have a copy on the new disk.

Hard Disk Users Warning:
Many of the programs on this disk are generally set for drive 0, and
sometimes you will find certain programs will not load. The reason for
this is that you may have configured your drive to 4, rather than 0.
If a program does not load and gives an error, try configuring
the drive back to zero, this is done by pressing F12 from desktop and
typing *Configure Drive 0. This should then, hopefully, remove any
errors caused by any program run from the menuing system.
Regular Features
The Adverts section contains advertisements from certain companies who
supply the Archimedes marketplace. There are details of new products,
sample files and order forms.
There is also a number of forms for subscriptions, software
submissions and back issue orders which can be loaded into a text
editor, filled in and printed out.
Viruses
We take the threat of viruses seriously at Archimedes World so our
cover disks are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are virus free.
We can only check for known viruses and there is the small
possibility of new, undocumented viruses slipping through our checking
procedure. Please be aware though that you are as likely to contract a
virus from any other source as you are from Archimedes World.
We want YOUR program
Not only do we want your program but we're also willing to pay for it.
We are interested in applications, utilities, graphic screens,
animation, clip art sprite/Draw files, music, sound samples, games,
demos and anything else that is interesting and original.
You should also note that RISC-OS applications stand the best
chance of publication.
You should always send in your program submissions complete with the
submission form and a Stamped Addressed Envelope. Submission forms can
be found on this disk and inside the magazine (photocopies are
accepted). Program submissions are usually processed within four weeks
of receipt, however you should allow up to six weeks for a reply as
software evaluation and testing can take quite some time.

The standard of software on this cover disk is very high and is
typical of the quality of software which has been published by
Archimedes World (and A&B Computing) over the last few years. To make
