VIEW/GEOGRAPHY/HEIGHT

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

CE HEIGHT, ASPECT AND GRADIENT

When carrying out my fieldwork in Chipstead, one of the
most noticeable factors was the steep gradient changes from one
part of the parish to another. This section of the project covers
three aspects of these steep slopes - land height in different
parts of Chipstead, gradient (the changes in land height over a
distance) and slope aspect (the direction in which the slope is
facing). When starting this section I thought that it could
possibly account for the difference in field types throughout the
parish. I therefore set out to investigate this.

Although I got a general ideaof the gradients from walking
around, I used contour lines to achieve a better and clearer-to-
understand set of results. The map on the following page shows the
contour lines for the parish of Chipstead at intervals of 100 feet.
The different land uses aren't marked on it because the map was too
time-consuming to draw again, but the contour lines can be seen
against land use on the overlay mapping later on. The letters
marked on the contour map refer to the cross-sections that follow.

It can be seen from the map that the heights in the parish
differ between the 400ft mark and the 500ft mark. However, I don't
really think that the height differences themselves could affect
land use because they aren't great enough. The aspect of a slope is
the direction in which it is facing. In Chipstead all the slopes
face either North-west or North-east, so I don't think this is
a great contributor to land use either.

However, I do think that gradient can affect land use. Part
of Chipstead is in a valley and the rest is on the slopes of this
valley. It seems to me that housing and fields for grazing are on
the slopes wheras the arable fields tend to be more concentrated on
the flater land lower down. This is because crops are much easier
to water and harvest on flat land, wheras animals don't require
much attention and can graze on slopes with a greater gradient.
Housing is also on these slopes, but can be found on the flat land
as well. This is because we can build houses almost wherever we
want now. Photograph B at the back shows arable fields on the flat
land roughly in the centre of Chipstead (at about 400ft).

After the contour map, two cross-sections from the map can
be seen. They both cover a distance of 1 mile and the letters show
the positions they start and end on the map. Cross-section AB shows
the valley in Chipstead and the slopes on each side. As can be
seen, the arable fields are in the valley and the pastoral ones are
up the sides of the slope. This again shows that crops are more
likely to be found growing on level ground. Cross-section CD cuts
through the Long Plantation and again shows the valley and sides of
the slopes. However in this view woodland is in the valley because
it is protected as part of the Green Belt. The arable fields are up
the sides of the slope, but it is not really very steep - as can be
seen from the map because the contour lines aren't too close
together.
