Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

� �!DeskUtils documentation
�
Over the years, a large number of little "odds &
ends" have appeared, each designed to cure a niggle with the
desktop. Some are tremendously useful, others just a waste of
disc space. Almost everyone has a few such indispensible
programs, but I find it a lot of hassle loading them up at the
start of each session, and the icon bar soon gets cluttered up.
!DeskUtils is a sort of compendium of what I consider
to be the more useful utilities. Some are more useful only to
programmers, most are for everyone. It has the following func
tions:
- Basic Editor front end
- four "overscan" modes
- mouse step changer
- set current directory
- file type changer
- *Wipe function
- *Info function
- *Wipe/*Copy/*Count options setter
�Basic Editor front end�
This is indispendible to any Basic programmer, and very easy
to use. You simply drag the Basic program you wish to create onto
the !DeskUtils icon. The Basic Editor is then entered with your
file loaded into it. Alternatively, the Editor can be entered
without any file loaded simply by clicking on the icon. To get
back into the desktop, simply hold down Shift+Ctrl+f4, making
sure you have saved your program first.
It would be possible for any more experienced program to
alter the application so that, for instance, Acorn's advanced
text editor Twin would be entered insted of the Basic Editor,
although I have found that Twin tends to pop up an obscure error
when returning back to the desktop.
�Please note:� Because the Basic Editor is copyright, it
cannot be supplied with the application. To copy it, first
open the Modules directory on the Applications disc 2, and then
the !DeskUtils directory (this is accomplished by double-clicking
on the application as you would to load it whilst holding down
shift). The BasicEdit module can then be copied by dragging its
icon from the Modules directory into the !DeskUtils directory.
�Overscan modes�
One of the problems I find with the desktop is that the
availiable scrren workspace is rather limited. Overscan modes
cure this problem by increasing the screen size. It doues this by
decreasing the front and back "porches", i.e. the amount of
screen unused. This damages neither the monitor nor the computer,
and doesn't alter the aspect ratio (x to y scale) of the picture,
although these modes do take up rather more space than their
non-overscan counterparts. The overscan modes can be accessed
from the !DeskUtils menu (brought up by clicking over the icon
�with the menu button), and there is a direct replacement for each
of the most common desktop modes: 8,12,15 and 16.
�Mouse step changer�
I have my mouse step configured to 4, as I like to get
around the desktop quickly, but it is sometimes helpful to be
able to move the pointer more slowly, for example when using
!FormEd or !Paint. The mouse step can be selected from the icon
menu.
�Select current directory�
One of the most used *commands for desktop (apart from
*Help!) is *Dir,as many programs assume that you are in their
directory, and the way the Desktop works, this is almost never
the case! This utility is also a solution to the "Can't delete
current directory" error. To use it, you simply "drag" the
!DeskUtils icon, using �select�, onto the filer window of the
directory you wish to become current (i.e. the one that will be
catalogued when you do a *. and the default directory when you
load or save a program from outside the desktop).
�File type setter�
When converting files from other machines, it is almost
always necessary to set their file type (the file type is a
number attached to each file, telling the computer what type of
file it is, for instance &FFF is a text file, and &FF9 indicates
a sprite file).
To use this function, select "Set type" from the icon bar
menu. A window will appear, into which you can type either a file
type number/name, or load/exec addresses for the file (the two
are mutually exclusive, as the byte of data used for the file
type & date stamp is also used for the load/execution addresses
of the file, should it not be filetyped). The small box on the
top row is for a file type number, and the one on the right hand
side is for a file type name. The computer will automatically
calculate and display the file type number for any name you type
in, and vice-versa. Finally, drag the files you wish to set the
filetype of onto the Set type window.
�*Wipe function�
*Wipe is a more powerful version of the *Delete command. Not
only will it delete directories and files, but it can be
instructed to force deletions of even locked files, and recurse
downwards in directories. Its main use is to clear the Ramdisc so
you can remove it.
Files are wiped by dragging them onto the !DeskUtils icon
(you can select as many files as you wish, and drag them onto the
icon all at once), much as you would do to load them into the
Basic Editor, but this time holding down the Delete key. The
Delete key �MUST� be held down all the way through the operation,
otherwise the application gets confused and tries to load them
into the Basic Editor- this can crash the computer! Beware!
�*Info function�
� *Info is a command that should have been on the filer menu,
but never got there. It basically gives the attributes of a file
in much the same way that a "Full info" display does, but this
implementation also allows you to alter the attributes of the
file in much the same way as the settyper.
To use it, drag the file you wish to examine the attributes
of onto the !Deskutils icon (again, like you would to load the
file into the Basic Editor), but this time holding down the
Insert key. A window appears showing the attributes of the file,
which can be edited in much the same way as they can using the
Set type function. To save the alterations to the file, click on
the OK icon.
�*Wipe/*Copy/*Count options setter�
Each of the above * commands has an option string attached
to it, which gives it details on how the user wants the operation
to be performed. Each option "flag" can be altered from the icon
bar menu. I will not go into detail about these flags, as their
respective uses are all documented in the User Guide, in the
description of these *commands. The most notable use of them is
to alter the way the *Wipe function works in !DeskUtils.
Please note: the two flags the filer allows you to set (the
"Options" option on the filer menu) take precedence over those
selected in the !DeskUtils menu.
