Translator/!Translatr/!Help

This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.

Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

Translator 4.21 (RISCOS multitasking application)

Version date : 14 Nov 1989

- Introduction

Translator will translate image files from other computers to Archimedes.
The following image files are supported :

- Atari PI1 and PI3 files (320x200x16 and 640x400x2 respectively)
- Amiga IFF files (various colour/pixel resolutions, also HAM mode)
- MacIntosh MacPaint files (576x720x2)
- GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) files (various colour/pixel resolutions)

The images in these files all have their own colour and pixel resolutions.
Translator will do its best to reach a result as close to the original as
possible. It will choose the most suitable Archimedes screen mode, and reflect
the image's palette as closely as possible. A multisync monitor will allow
most high (vertical) resolution images to be displayed accurately.

- The application

To start up Translator, double-click on the '!Translatr' icon. It will
install itself on the icon bar, and clicking MENU on Translator's icon will
give the usual 'Info' and 'Quit' options. Clicking SELECT will pop up the
options menu, but most options will not be selectable at this stage.

Loading an image can be done in three ways :
a) by dragging the image file to the Translator icon on the icon bar
b) by dragging the image file to the image window (when an image is loaded)
c) by double-clicking on an image file

Image files should be filetyped appropiately to be recognized by Translator.
The following filetypes are used by Translator :

----------------------------------------------------------------
Filetype Name Image file type
----------------------------------------------------------------
&001 AtariPI1 Atari PI1 image file
&002 AtariPI3 Atari PI3 image file
&003 AmigaIFF Amiga IFF image file
&004 MacPaint MacIntosh MacPaint image file
&005 GIF GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) image file
----------------------------------------------------------------

Each of these filetypes will appear with its own filetype icon in filer
windows. They are similar to Translator's iconbar icon.

When succesfully processed, the image will appear in a resizable, scrollable
window. Images which cannot be displayed to their full pixel resolution
(because of a lack of a suitable Archimedes screen mode on your monitor)
can still be examined in full detail by using the window's scroll bars.

- The options menu

Clicking MENU on the image window (which appears when an image is succesfully
converted) will pop up the options menu :

'Info'

This icon will pop up an information window, in which the resolution,
compression technique and ratio, etc. of the image is displayed.

'Auto mode select'

This icon will toggle the 'Auto mode' flag. When it is ON (i.e. ticked)
Translator will select the most suitable mode for display of the image
for you. When OFF, you must choose the mode yourself, using the image
information provided by 'Info'.

'GIF image'

GIF image files may contain more than one image. When this is the case,
the image info window will indicate this. By default the first image is
displayed, but, by altering this writable icon to 'n', the nth image
in the GIF file will be displayed when it is reloaded into Translator.
When the nth image is not present, Translator will complain. Regardless,
take care that the value is correct.

'Image palette', 'Desktop palette', 'Standard palette'

These will select either the image's own palette, the desktop palette
or the standard mode palette (selected on VDU20). The image's own palette
is used by default when the image is loaded. The desktop palette is
selected instead of the image's palette when the number of colours in
the current mode is not equal to the required number of colours for
the image. Translator will also urge you to select a suitable mode.

'Zoom in', 'Zoom out', 'Normal size'

The first two icons will zoom in and out on the image in steps of 2
(i.e. 2 times, 4 times, 8 times enlarged, etc.). 'Normal size' will
reselect the default zoom factor of 1 (i.e. not enlarged).

'Include palette'

This will toggle the 'include palette' flag. When it is ON (i.e. 'ticked')
any saves will save the current palette with the sprite. When OFF, no
palette is saved along with the image. See 'Save image' for more details.

'Save image'

This icon gives access to a submenu of five ways in which the image
may be saved :

* 'Full' will save the image with full accuracy as one sprite ('image')
in a sprite file (images are stored im memory by Translator in sprite
format with full pixel resolution, which is scaled when displaying it).
A MacPaint image of 576x720 pixels, for example, will be saved
without losing accuracy, in contrast to the other four 'saves' (as
described below). These fully accurate sprites can then be used
in full (e.g. dumping to a printer with suitable software), or be
scaled by another application (e.g. a DTP package).
The palette saved (when selected with 'Include palette') will always be
  the image's own palette.
NOTE : Saving a 256-colour mode image with 'Full' will NOT save the
palette data in the sprite file, regardless of the 'Include palette'
flag, as Translator does not change the palette in 256-colour modes.
* 'Whole', 'Whole (scaled)', 'Part', 'Part (scaled)' will display the
image on the current mode's screen with its own palette, and save
an editable part of the screen to a sprite file. Scaling is performed
on the image as appropiate, to fit it on the current mode's screen.
By selecting one of these four 'saves', you can choose whether or not
you want to (further) scale the image (the '(scaled)' saves will let
you do this), and whether or not to cut out a specific piece (the
'Part' saves will let you do this, the 'Whole' saves won't), prior to
saving. The name of the sprite in the sprite files created with these
four saves is 'screendump' (as with *SCREENSAVE).
The palette saved (when selected with 'Include palette') will be the
  palette selected before the save.

Saving of the image is done by dragging the sprite file icon (which appears
before any scaling or cutting is done) to a directory viewer. Alternatively,
you may save the image sprite directly into another application (e.g. !Paint),
by dragging it to the application's iconbar icon or one of its windows.

- Further notes

It should be noted that memory is of the utmost importance to this
application. You should reserve as much memory as you can manage for
the screen memory (at least 160K when you have a normal monitor, or
320K if you own a multisync monitor) and enough memory for the application
itself. When the application has too little memory free to use for
decompression, scratch space and sprite memory, it will complain.
You may choose to continue if you do so, but the resolution of the images
that can be handled will be reduced drastically.

There is a certain amount of 'mode independance' for the image display.
You may select other modes than the mode which Translator uses to pop up
the image, but you are advised not to, as these modes will always be
a poorer choice than Translator's choice. If you do select another mode,
then ensure that the number of colours in the mode chosen by Translator
and yours are the same. E.g. if Translator used mode 15 (256 colours),
then only select modes 13 or 10 (which also have 256 colours, but lower
horizontal resolutions), or modes 24 (if you have enough screen memory)
or 21 (if you use a multisync monitor). In modes with the 'wrong' number
of colours, Translator will do no attempt to correct for this, so image
display (and save) will not be correct. In higher resolution modes than
required for the image, such as mode 21 in this example, the image window
will be scaled as appropiate without enlarging the image.

GIF files are particularly complex and memory-greedy to decompress and
convert. When Translator runs out of memory, it will attempt to use
the screen memory for decompression, and complain if it is absolutely
impossible to handle the image.

Translator does not load the image files, but loads them in chunks while
decompressing and converting. Within memory constraints, more or less RAM
may be used for buffering, and the former may considerably speed up the
conversion.
