!AWJune94/Goodies/WordPairs/!Help
This website contains an archive of files for the Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64 computers, which Dominic Ford has rescued from his private collection of floppy disks and cassettes.
Some of these files were originally commercial releases in the 1980s and 1990s, but they are now widely available online. I assume that copyright over them is no longer being asserted. If you own the copyright and would like files to be removed, please contact me.

+-----------------+ | !WordPairs Help | +-----------------+ Archimedes World 1994 Risc OS 2 & 3 Version For Archimedes World By K.Swinton & N.Anderthal Word Pairs is a version of picture pairs with a difference. It is not a multi-tasking application, but will run from and return you to the desktop, memory permitting. The object of Word Pairs is to guess the hidden word. A five letter word is hidden behind a grid of 50 tiles. The tiles cover 48 pictures and two wildcards. You must match two pictures or one wildcard and any picture to reveal sections of the word. The tiles matched are then won by that player. You then have 10 seconds to guess what the word is and type it in (or press RETURN if you don't know). The game ends when the word has been guessed or less than four tiles are left in the grid. One player game --------------- In the one player game, you have to guess a randomly selected five letter computer word. Two player game --------------- In the two player game, each player has a different word to guess. This can be a randomly selected computer word or a word entered by your opponent. Each player takes it in turn to match pairs of pictures on the grid. A turn ends when the chosen pictures don't match or the word is guessed. Bonus shape ----------- While playing the game, it is possible to gain extra points with the 'bonus shape'. When tiles are matched by a player, those tiles then turn the colour of the player who won them (red for player 1, blue for player 2). If you can manage to form the bonus shape with the tiles you've won you then get a bonus, depending on the size of the shape. The bonus shape is redefinable. Words ----- A word can be scrambled (anagram) or normal, and a maximum of five letters long. Any words with less than five letters are padded with spaces to make them up to five. New words can be loaded by clicking on the 'Load New Words' menu option. The files provided are: 3LetterMix - a mix of general 3 letter words 4LetterMix - a mix of general 4 letter words 5LetterMix - a mix of general 5 letter words - this is the default file Computers - a (small) file of computer related 5 letter words Food+Drink - 5 letter food and drink words Nature - nature related words (animals, plants etc) PotPourri - a large mixture of general 3, 4 and 5 letter words In the game, the number of words is shown in brackets next to each file. You can add more words either by adding them to an existing file in the !WordPairs.Words directory, or by creating a new words text file. Remember that words can only be up to five letters long, and a words file must end with a new line character. Skill level ----------- There are five skill levels in !WordPairs. Each skill level has a different number of pictures: 'Mega Easy' has four different pictures, while 'Mega Tuff' has 24 different pictures - obviously, it is more difficult to remember where 24 pairs of pictures are than where 4 pairs of pictures are. The first four skill levels also have the option of choosing from the 24 different pictures. Win bonus --------- The win bonus is calculated from factors determining how difficult the game was and how well you did. These factors include skill level, word type, the number of players and how many goes you had before you guessed the word. Tune controls ------------- Although at present there is no tune in the !WordPairs game, up to four can be added. They must be the new Archimedes format 'STmodule' (type &CB6) music files and must be renamed 'Tune1','Tune2','Tune3' and 'Tune4'. It is essential that 'Tune1' is the largest of the tunes. 'Tune1' is loaded and played first. You will also have to add the TrackerModule 2.06 to the !WordPairs directory this must be (re)named 'PM'. I do not recommended using 8 channel music files, since they tend to make the game unbearably slow. Once you have added tunes, a small change needs to be made to the '!Run' file. Load it into !Edit and remove the |s as indicated in the file. The game should now work as before, but with music. Note that is also takes longer to load. The game searches for tunes and depending on how many it finds, a small tune selector box will appear in the main menu next to the speaker. You can now choose any of your tunes by clicking on 1 - 4 or turn the tune off by clicking on 0. During the game, pressing keys 0 - 4 will have the same effect as clicking on 0 - 4 has on the menu. The internal speaker(s) can be toggled on or off by clicking on the small speaker - when it's green the speaker(s) are on. High Score Table ---------------- The high score table is automatically saved to disc every time it has a new entry - to prevent this on floppy discs, write protect the disc BEFORE loading the game. Hard disc users will have to create a locked empty file called 'Dummy' in the !WordPairs directory - lock it by using the Access option of your filer. The table can be emptied by holding down SHIFT+CTRL and then pressing ESCAPE whilst on the menu screen. Other Notes ----------- The scrolling message on the menu is read from the 'Message' file in the !WordPairs directory so if you would like to re-write the message, this is the file to change.
